Danielle Russell, 33

Danielle Sabrina Russell died suddenly August 29, 2007 at Brockville General Hospital. She was 33 years old.

Born in Brockville on July 11, 1974 to Richard and Margot (nee Nadeau) Russell, she was raised and educated here, attending Westminster Public School and Brockville Collegiate Institute.

Ms Russell worked at Le Chateau in Brockville before moving to Toronto to work at Cosmedica, Shoeless Joe's and the Roti Restaurant. She returned to Brockville three years ago, finding employment with J.R. Bailey's, Adecco, Procter and Gamble and finally Frank Trussell Construction.

She enjoyed biking, traveling, camping, knitting, fishing, boating, socializing and going to the beach as well as engaging in activities with her son and hanging out with her sisters and brother, dancing and singing and playing cards.

Ms Russell was predeceased by grandparents Margret and Lucien Nadeau and Pauline and Delbert Russell as well as an aunt, Shellia Russell.

She is survived by brother Ricky (Sophi Paradis) of Yonge's Mills Road, sisters Kelly (Simon Darke), Polly (Joe) Buote and Nikki, all of the Brockville area, stepparents Bonnie Wall and Hugo, and close friends Frank Trussell, Carol White and Janet Cordingly, as well as two nieces and six nephews.

Funeral services were held September 1 and the Barclay Funeral Home, officiated by Father Tim Harrison.

Ricky Russell served as honorary pallbearer. Burial was at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.

Orville Leland Bernard, 81

A longtime resident of Row's Corners, Orville Leland Bernard, 81, died on July 29, 2007 at Kingston General Hospital. He had been a resident of the Rosedale Retirement Centre for nine months before his death.

Mr. Bernard was a great family man, spending many hours playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was well-known for his sense of humour and his love of sports, particularly the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays. The family TV remote control got a good workout when multiple sports seasons overlapped.

He took great pride in his large vegetable garden and numerous flower beds on his large property at Row's Corners. Mr. Bernard also enjoyed playing cards, listening to old-time country music and reading western novels.

Born in Renfrew on September 16, 1925, he was the son of Orville John Bernard and Hester Alce Smith. He was raised and educated in the Ottawa Valley, including Burnstown, North Gower and eventually Spencerville. Mr. Bernard was married to the former Reta Doreen Kingston in Spencerville on May 9, 1953 and they spent 53 years together before her death last October.

They took up residence in Lyn in 1954 and then made their home in Row's Corners from 1960 until 2006. During his working years, Mr. Bernard was a farmhand, was employed in lumber camps and sugar bushes and then was hired as a drawn-wire machinist at Phillips Cables in Brockville. He took early retirement from the company in the late 1970s.

His large family included nine siblings. He was predeceased by Glenn Smith, Ronald Bernard, Corrine Pigeon, Vivian Brown and Mildred Sauve. Surviving brothers and sisters are Ralph Bernard (Rene) of Rosedale Retirement Centre, Viola Perrin (John) of Prescott, Bernice MacDonald of Prescott and Delta Grant of Brockville.

Most of his children still reside in this region. His daughters are Millie Bernard of Brockville, Wanda Ritchie (Tom Clement) of Brockville and Karen Schipper (Rob) of Oxford Station. His sons are Rick Bernard of Brockville, Roger Bernard (Mary Teresa) of Brockville and Kevin Bernard (Karen) of England.

Mr. Bernard is also sadly missed by 13 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Visitation took place at Barclay Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 1, with funeral services held there in the chapel on Thursday, August 2 under the direction of Rev. A. Rose. Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Garden alondside his loving wife.

Pallbearers included his nephews Tim Bernard, Philip Bernard, Wayne Bernard, Steven Brown, Randy Chisamore and Larry Sauve, Bill Bernard and Wayne Cryderman.

Memorial donations were directed to the Bethel United Church and the Canadian Cancer Society.

LouAnne 'Scoop' Brouwer, 52

LouAnne Leslee "Scoop" Brouwer died peacefully at home on July 11, 2007 with her family by her side. She was 52 years old.

Born in Brockville on October 15, 1954 to John and Faye (nee Ritchie) Lyon, she was raised and educated here, attending Brockville Collegiate Institute.

She met her future husband, Joe Brouwer, in 1973. They headed out west and were married on July 11, 1974 in Vancouver, but they missed home and returned to the city in January 1976.

Ms Brouwer began her working career as a ward clerk at Sherwood Park Manor, moving later to the day hospital and physiotherapy department at Brockville General Hospital, where she also served for several years as union president.

She took a lot of pride in her home and loved decorating, especially for the holidays. She also loved gardening and pets, making a daily trek to Brown's Bay to walk her dogs.

Ms Brouwer often wore orange and had her hair done "big, " a strong-willed woman with an infectious laugh who often was the life of the party. When diagnosed with breast cancer, she rarely complained and kept on smiling, adopting the attitude she should enjoy every day.

She loved spending time with family, considering her grandchildren her pride and joy. She recently vacationed at Disney World in Florida with her daughter's family.

Ms Brouwer was predeceased by her mother Faye in 2004.

She is survived by her husband Joe, daughter Tracey (Andrew) Henderson of Spencerville, son Tim (Jennifer) of Brockville, father John Lyon, sisters Sandra (David) Dawson, Sherry (Gord) Marriner and Jackie (Ron Brouwer), all of Brockville, and grandchildren Anna, Sam, Lily and Grace Henderson and Daniel Brouwer.

Funeral services were held July 13 at the Irvine Funeral Home, officiated by Reverend Janine Dekker. Tributes were presented by her daughter Tracey and sister Sherry. Burial will take place later at Bollingbrook Cemetery in Westport.

Memorial donations to the Faye Lyon Memorial Bursary at BCI and palliative care at Brockville General Hospital are gratefully acknowledged by the family.

Helen Cheeseman

Helen Eunice Cheeseman, 84, died suddenly after suffering a stroke at the Rosedale Retirement Centre in Brockville on June 16, 2007.

She was born in Prescott on April 10, 1923, the eldest daughter of 13 children born to Royal Magee and the former Eva Countryman. She grew up in Prescott, where she attended elementary and high school. She worked at the Dominion Lighthouse Depot plant in Prescott, beginning at age 17.

She was married at St. Mark's Church in Prescott in Novembr 1943 to George A. Cheeseman. The couple moved to Camp Borden in the early years of their marriage. They also lived at Petawawa before moving to Brockville in 1946, where they lived for the rest of their lives. Mrs. Cheeseman was a housewife after her marriage.

Family was the first priority for Mrs. Cheeseman. She loved playing cards with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles, playing cribbage and Scrabble, fishing, and spending time at the family cottage.

Mrs. Cheeseman lived at the Rosedale for the final two years of her life, following her husband's death. While there, she enjoyed playing euchre and bingo and was reunited with a former neighbour of 32 years, Ivy Shire.

She is survived by daughters Muriel Bowen (Raymond) of Lyn and June Newcombe (Danny) of North Augusta; grandchildren Tracey and Darrell Bowen, Tyler and Shane Newcombe, and Barry, George and Tina Cheeseman. Also surviving are sister Shirley Roode, brothers Huck, Gordon and Royal Magee, along with several great-grandchildren.

Her husband of 61 years, George A. Cheeseman, died in 2005. She was also predeceased by her parents, son George Cheeseman Jr. and grandson Corby Newcombe, and a number of brothers and sisters.

John Male, 75

John Male, 75, of Addison, an animal enthusiast who turned his love of horses into a great hobby, died July 9, 2007 at Brockville General Hospital after being in failing health for several months.

He was born in Barrie on February 10, 1932 but moved to this area at a young age and was raised and educated in Addison. Mr. Male attended Athens District High School and attended Kemptville College of Agriculture and Technology, graduating from there and returning to the family dairy farm in Addison.

He married Pamela Perkins in Glen Buell United Church on October 29, 1955 and they lived and farmed in Addison all of John's life.

Mr. Male loved all animals and included them in his daily routine as much as possible. His first job as a youth was delivering milk to the residents of Addison. He used a little wagon, pulled by the family dog, and later he switched to a large billygoat to help haul the load to his customers.

Horses later became a large part of Mr. Male's life. He enjoyed working with them and along with a group of friends formed the Ontario Workhorse Workshop. Each summer they taught 20 students from many walks of life to harness, drive and work with horses.

He and his family joined the Eastern Ontario Pleasure Driving Society, first with his team of Belgians and later his beautiful team of Clyde-Hackney crosses. He was a member of the Draft Horse Club and the Plowmen's Association and before his death was looking forward to this summer's International Plowing Match in Crosby.

Mr. Male was a member of the Masonic Lodge #85 and the Loyal Orange Lodge #14 and was also an active lifetime member of the Athens Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife Pamela, son John and his wife Christine of Addison; three daughters: Melanie Male, Janine Male and her husband Tom Van Droffelaar of Addison, Gwyneth Male of RR4, Brockville and friend Todd Lee of Athens. Mr. Male's grandchildren are Genevieve, Joshua, Justin, Jeremy, Jackson, Johnathon and Jayson.

Also surviving are sister-in-law Thelma Perkins of RR4, Brockville, brother-in-law Lyle Perkins and his wife Gail of North Augusta, cousins Beverly Gregg and husband Bill of Chatham, William Band and wife Betty of Toronto, along with Millard Goodsell and wife Irene of Delta. He was predeceased by parents Walter and Carmen Male.

Visitation was held at the Judson Funeral Home in Athens on July 11, where the Masonic Lodge held a memorial service. Guests were also received on July 12 prior to the funeral services in the chapel, officiated by Rev. Bill Adams of the Athens Baptist Church.

The organist was Edith Phillips and serving as pallbearers were Gary Gray, Karl Miller, Joe Haggett, Reg Doyle and grandsons Joshua and Justin Male. Interment was in the family plot at Oakland Cemetery. Donations were gratefully received and directed to Athens Baptist Church, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Diabetes Association.
