He was born October 11, 1918 in Augusta Township to Gordon Kirkby and the former Pearl Little. He was raised in Algonquin, Prescott and Brockville.

In 1932 he joined the Brockville Rifles and remained with that militia until June 1940, when he joined the army's Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders. He served overseas in England, France and Italy in the Second World War and was discharged in September 1945.

Earl Powell, 89

ELGIN -- Earl Wilson Power, 89, of Elgin, died August 19, 2004 at Kingston General Hospital, where he had been a patient since January 2004.

He was born January 19, 1915 at Carmel District, Saskatchewan, the son of William Henry Powell and his wife, the former Susan Jane Glover.

He married Gertie Earl on December 1, 1939 at Delta and they took up residence at and continued to operate the farm his mother and father had purchased in 1926 on moving to the Elgin area from Saskatchewan. Before becoming a farmer, young Earl had worked on the Great Lakes boats.

Mr. Powell found great satisfaction in farming, an occupation he was proud of even after his retirement in the mid-'80s.

He enjoyed carpentry and woodworking and was adept at tatting, crocheting and knitting, skills he learned at a young age from his mother. He was known for his expertise with wood, as well as for his ability to share stories of human interaction and community history.

He enjoyed fishing and in his early years did guide work on the local lakes. He loved meeting and visiting with people and maintained his sense of humour to the very end.

He identified strongly with the United Church, but his friendships, kinships and sustenance came through the Masonic Lodge through most of his life. At one time he was master of the lodge and eventually became the oldest living member.

Mr. Powell was predeceased by his parents, his sister Hilda and her husband Joe Grigg, brother Howard and his wife Violet, and sister-in-law Irene Powell.

At Mr. Powell's request there was no visitation. A graveside service was held August 24 at the Halliday Cemetery in Elgin, with Rev. Harry Seeley officiating.

Members of the Masonic Lodge also held a memorial tribute.

Jack Drummond, 71

John Alvin "Jack" Drummond, 71, died of cancer August 28, 2004 at Brockville General Hospital. He had had surgery in September 2003 and recovered until May 2004, when cancer returned, in the esophagus.

He was born June 19, 1933 in Toledo, Ont., to John Holmes Drummond and the former Ethel Grace Stafford. He grew up in Toledo and attended schools in Toledo and Smiths Falls. In his teens, he worked out west on various wheat farms, helping to take off the crop.

On June 12, 1964 he married Shirley Louise Crooke in Wall Street United Church.

First he drove a truck for Edwards Transport in Frankville. Then he started working at Brockville Psychiatric Hospital in July 1958 as an attendant and continued in that position until his retirement on January 31, 1991.

He identified with St. John's United Church, in Brockville.

Mr. Drummond enjoyed boating on the St. Lawrence River for many years and also travelled out west on numerous occasions to visit his cousins in Saskatoon. He and his wife Shirley took annual vacations in March to Florida, including this past spring. He especially enjoyed a Panama Canal cruise in 1996 and an Alaskan cruise in 1999.

He enjoyed "visiting" with his friends. They used to meet weekly "at the office" at the Queen's Grant motel. After that was demolished, they relocated to the Days Inn.

He took great pride in his automobiles and always made sure they were clean. He would never drive his Cadillac in the winter, to avoid the salt on the roads.

Mr. Drummond is survived by his wife Shirley, daughter Ann Louise of Brockville and stepson Larry Crooke of Brockville, as well as four stepgrandchildren, Erik, Jason, Casey and Thomas Crooke.

Also surviving are his brothers Robert and wife Eleanor and Wilmer Drummond, all of Smiths Falls, and three sisters, Barbara McGrath and husband Thorold of Eastons Corners, Vivian Willows of Toledo and Bernice Wiseman and husband Douglas of Perth, numerous nieces and nephews, and a sister-in-law, Hilda Drummond of Keene, Ont.

He was predeceased by his parents, Holmes and Grace Drummond, his twin brother Kenneth in infancy, sister-in-law Evelyn Drummond and brother-in-law Lloyd Winters.

Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where on August 31 the funeral was held, with Rev. Myra Garvin officiating. A private burial was held at Oakland Cemetery.

Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

On September 1, 1956 he married Jeanine Lanctot at St. Francis Xavier Church in Brockville.

He had come to Brockville in 1952 to work for Fraser Brace at DuPont as an electrician.

From there he went to Automatic Electric while it was being built, then on to Phillips Cables.

Starting in maintenance as an electrician, he later became foreman, responsible for the entire maintenance crew.

In 1993 he retired to enjoy summer camping at Pleasure Park on Graham Lake, fishing, carving decoys, gardening and spending time with his family and his faithful brown Labrador dog, Mandy.

He is survived by his wife Jeanine, son Dan and fiancee Karen Moffitt, daughter Cathy Stewart and husband Dave and granddaughters Melissa and Brittany.

Also surviving are his sisters, Evelyn Cunningham, Leila Quigley and husband Jimmy and Alice Wensing and husband George, and brothers Emmett, D.J. and wife Joan, and Hugh, as well many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and in July 2004 by his brother-in-law Bill Cunningham.
