PRESCOTT -- Lawrence Ronald "Larry" Wilson, 80, died February 12, 2005 at Brockville General Hospital.
He was born September 7, 1924 in Sterling, Ont. to Roy Wilson and the former Almina Stapley.
During the Second World War he served in the Army Medical Corps, stationed in Mission City, B.C. Later he was stationed in Vancouver, where he met his wife, Rhoda Olynyk. They were married in Belleville.
After the war he was employed by the T. Eaton Co. in Peterborough, then transferred to Brockville as department manager of the store here. Following that, he owned Wilson's Carpets and Drapes until his retirement.
He enjoyed traveling, boating, skidooing, walking and being out in nature.
He liked to feed squirrels, chipmunks and birds and also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. His main interest was his family.
Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife Rhoda, daughter Val Darling of Brockville, son Ron Wilson of Prescott, grandchildren Mark, Scott, Keith and Chad and great-grandchildren Devin and Hailey.
He was predeceased by his parents and infant twin brothers.
Cremation was arranged and a memorial service was held February 17 at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, with Rev. Laurie Milito officiating.
Van McCready, 64
LANSDOWNE -- Van James McCready, 64, of Lansdowne, died of lung disease February 24, 2005 in Kingston.
He was born February 23, 1941, in Lansdowne to Robert McCready and the former Vera Vanderburg. He was raised and educated in Lansdowne and married Evangeline Kelsey on June 26, 1965, in Gananoque.
He was employed by the Township of Leeds and Thousand Islands but had been off work for the past four years.
He identified with Athens Free Methodist Church and was a 35-year member of the Leeds and Thousand Islands volunteer fire department, serving as its captain. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating and bowling.
Mr. McCready is survived by his wife Evangeline, son Martin and wife Debbie of Battersea and daughter Liz Russell and husband Jody of Lansdowne, as well as four grandchildren, Christopher and Michael McCready and Travis and Kelsey Russell.
Also surviving are six sisters, Donna Bodner of British Columbia, Marilyn Carew of Cambridge, Linda Shorey of Brockville, Virginia Chartier of Napanee and Lynn Roberts and Sandy MacDonald, both of Hamilton.
He was predeceased by his parents, brother Guy Fines and two brothers-in-law.
Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, in Lansdowne on February 27. The funeral was held February 28 in Athens Free Methodist Church, with Rev. Rodney Peterson officiating. Burial will take place at a later date.
The active pallbearers were Steve Lawson, Tom Mallory, Robert Adams, Tom Shorey, David Carew and Mark Carew. The honorary pallbearers were Bill Grier, Wayne Shields, Ron Wyborn, Jim Byford, Jim Murchie, Dan Howe, Rodney Steacy and Rick Huck. An honour guard was formed by Ian Robertson, Scott MacKenzie, Paul Dickson and Ed Lynch.
Ronald 'Twink' Fodey
Ronald James "Twink" Fodey died of lung cancer January 12, 2005 at the Providence Continuing Care Centre, St. Vincent de Paul hospital.
He had suffered a badly broken ankle in the spring of 2004 and had just recovered from that when he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He was treated at Brockville General Hospital and the Kingston Cancer Clinic. His last six weeks were divided between BGH, Kingston General Hospital and the Providence Continuing Care Centre.
Born in Brockville, the son of Charles and Anna Fodey, he was educated at St. Francis Xavier School, Brockville Collegiate Institute and Syracuse University, where he earned a bachelor of business administration degree. His graduating class was addressed by Massachusetts Senator John F. Kennedy.
After university he worked for several years in Montreal as an auditor for B.F. Goodrich, RCA Victor and Dominion Bridge. His duties as an auditor took him across Canada many times during his career.
As a young man he was very active in the Brockville Rowing Club, first as an oarsman and later as a coxie. He was a member of several crews that competed at the Royal Canadian Henley. In 1956 he was the coxie of the Brockville Rowing Club crew that competed at the Royal Henley in England.
After his working years in Montreal, he returned to Brockville and the Brockville Rowing Club, where he coached many winning crews.
A lifelong bachelor, his main interests were his sisters, brothers and their families. As well as maintaining his interest in rowing, he became very involved with the Brockville Club, where he gained many new friends.
Mr. Fodey was predeceased by his parents, sisters Beatrice Lapierre and Doris Benoit, brother Leon and a brother Keith in infancy.
He is survived by sisters Pauline Johnston and Jeanne Perrin and husband Donald and by brother Paul and wife Jean, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was affiliated with St. Francis Xavier Church. His funeral was held January 15 from the Barclay Funeral Home to the church, where Father Brian Price celebrated the funeral mass. Burial followed in the Old St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.
The pallbearers were Laird Johnston, Steven Johnston, Michael Fodey, Peter Fodey, Sean Perrin and John Dixie.
Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society and to Providence Continuing Care Centre.
Joseph 'Elmer' Bertrend, 86
Joseph "Elmer" Bertrend, 86, died February 1, 2005 at St. Lawrence Lodge surrounded by his family. He died as a result of kidney failure over the previous few weeks.
He was born April 24, 1918 to Joseph William Bertrend and the former Mary Margaret Martin in the Smiths Falls area, where he was raised and educated.
On September 4, 1941, he married the former Alice "Doreen" Cole, who predeceased him six months ago.
In his early years he enjoyed many types of wildlife hunting and fishing with his sons and friends; in later years he was joined by his grandchildren as well.
He was a jack of all trades, doing everything from mechanical work to plumbing to wiring. He enjoyed going to auction sales and in his later years enjoyed wood carving and painting pictures his family and others now treasure. Staff and friends at St. Lawrence Lodge often asked him to paint them pictures for their homes as well.
Mr. Bertrend enjoyed taking trips to Myrtle Beach, Florida and Virginia Beach with his family. He was an avid darts player and played many card games, including the Legion euchre tournaments on Wednesday nights.
His family and friends were his main interests. He enjoyed family gatherings, where he was the star attraction, telling many humorous stories of his younger years.
He is survived by three daughters, Caroline Doucette of Kingston, Crystal Letts and husband Terry of RR 3, Prescott, and Mary Limbeek and friend Roger of Brockville, and by three sons, William and wife Monique of Brockville, Albert and wife Mary of Tincap and Dale and wife Donna of Brockville of Brockville, and son-in-law Kendal Young.
Also surviving are 22 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by his brother-in-law Joseph Kelso of Kemptville, sisters-in-law Gladys Brontmire, Grace Salmon and Lila Leonard, as well as Jennie McNish and husband Harold.
Besides his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his daughter Bonnie Young, son Terry Bertrend and sister Mary Kelso.
Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where on February 5 the funeral was held, with Father Claude Delorme officiating. His nephew Bruce Salmon gave the eulogy and his son Dale and granddaughter April Last also spoke. Burial will be at Manhard Cemetery in the spring.
The honorary pallbearers were his grandsons Randy, Edward, Wade, Todd, Brant, Brock, Michael and Andrew Bertrend, as well as Kevin and Chris Letts, Steven Young and Joe Doucette.
Lynn Paul, 39
Lynn Margaret Paul, 39, of Church Street, died at home surrounded by her family on January 25, 2005 after a determined battle with leukemia.
Born January 17, 1966 in Kingston, Ont. to Ian Ernest "Pat" Paterson and Doreen E. Paterson (nee Davis), she was raised in Kingston and attended First Avenue Public School, Queen Elizabeth Collegiate and Vocational Institute and Queen's University.
She came to Brockville after marrying Geoffrey S. Paul at The Church of the Redeemer, Kingston, on May 30, 1987. The two had known each other since summers in their youth, when their families both camped at the Mallorytown campground in St. Lawrence Islands National Park.
Mrs. Paul was first employed at the Woolworth's store in downtown Brockville. On the birth of her first child she quit work to raise her son, Shawn. Later, Christopher and Derek were born and she continued in the role of devoted housewife and mother, as well as resuming part-time work, at The Cloth Corner, after the boys had all started attending school.
She then began delivering newspapers for The Recorder and Times. She was a much loved carrier at The Harbourview, The Executive and The Four Winds condominium complexes. While still carrying out these duties, she joined The Recorder and Times as a part-time circulation clerk, a position she held until her illness no longer permitted her to work.
A member of St. Paul's Anglican Church, Brockville, she taught Sunday school and was the Sunday school treasurer.
Her love of children was evident in everything she did. Her roles as Sunday School teacher, parent volunteer at Prince of Wales Public School and volunteer at the YMCA all centred on children. She also served on the parent councils of both Prince of Wales and Thousand Islands Secondary School, on the parent committee of 8th Brockville Scouts, as bingo volunteer and registrar for 1st Brockville Scouts and treasurer for the 6th Brockville troop.
For several years she had volunteered as a canvasser for The Kidney Foundation, March of Dimes and other charities. Without a second thought, she would offer a helping hand to anyone who needed one. She had a vibrant personality and a real zest for life. She enjoyed canning and preserving food grown in her own garden and also loved to knit, rug hook, and quilt in her spare time, as well as go on ski trips with her family.
Besides her sons and husband, Mrs. Paul is survived by her mother and a sister Vicki Jeffery and her husband Lawrence of Mississauga.
She was predeceased by her father, almost seven months to the day before her death.
Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville. The funeral was held January 28 in the Barclay Chapel which was filled to overflowing. Rev. Gordon Mintz, of St. Paul's Anglican Church, officiated, with assistance from Rev. Stan Riley and Rev. David Townshend. Burial followed in Oakland Cemetery.
The pallbearers were Shawn Paul, Glenn Paul, Gregg Paul, Lawrence Jeffery, Jim Sones and Chris Groenewoud.
Memorial donations went to St. Paul's Anglican Church, to The Ottawa Hospital Foundation Bone Marrow Transplant Fund and to a fund for the Paul children.
