ELGIN -- Pieter "Peter" Breedyk, 88, of Delta, died in Brockville February 1, 2005, of complications from pneumonia. He was ill for a month.
He was born in Holland on June 30, 1916 and was raised and educated there. He married Jane Hoosbeek March 13, 1945, in Holland and they came to Canada in 1954, living in Prescott, Brockville and finally Delta.
He was a mechanic and owned his own garage in Delta for 20 years. He retired 25 years ago.
Mr. Breedyk identified with Delta United Church and was a tenor in the church choir and the choir leader.
He belonged to a bowling league, was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and belonged to the Masons, serving as a grand master at one time.
He enjoyed art and music, and loved to play the piano. He travelled to Holland, Portugal, Australia and the Caribbean.
Mr. Breedyk was predeceased by his wife Jane Breedyk, his daughter Cunera Cole and her husband Fred, and 13 brothers and sisters in Holland.
He is survived by his sons Peter Breedyk and wife Linda of Brockville and Bart Breedyk of Ottawa and his daughters Cathy Breedyk Law and husband Terry of Ottawa and Margriet Hintz of Brockville, as well as six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
His funeral was held February 4 at the Scotland Funeral Home in Elgin, with Rev. Kathryn Powell of Delta United Church officiating. Burial followed at Robertson Cemetery, Delta.
The pallbearers were Troy Curtis, Iver Israel, Brian Breedyk, Terry Law, John Vincent and Scott Myers. The honorary pallbearer was Trevor French.
Memorial donations were directed to the Delta Legion.
Will McInnes, 18
SOUTH MOUNTAIN -- William Keith "Will" McInnes, 18, of RR 1, South Mountain, died January 30, 2005 at Winchester District Memorial Hospital following a snowmobile accident.
He was born February 6, 1986 to David McInnes and his wife, the former Connie Crowder. He was a former student at Nationview Public School and Seaway District High School.
For the past two years he had been an employee of Armtec Ltd. He enjoyed snowmobiling and four-wheeling in his free time.
He is survived by his parents, David and Connie McInnes, brothers David Jr. and Michael, grandmothers Sheila Crowder of South Mountain and Marion McInnes of Maitland, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was predeceased by his grandfathers, Keith Crowder and James McInnes.
A memorial service was held February 3 at the Byers Funeral Home, South Mountain.
Memorial donations were directed to the Winchester District Memorial Hospital's Renewing the Vision campaign and to the Canadian Cancer Society. A trust fund was also established at the Bank of Nova Scotia, opened by Winchester Home Hardware.
Phyllis Spicer, 56
Phyllis Lucille Spicer, 56, a retired cook, died of cancer January 23, 2005 at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital after an illness lasting a year.
She was born November 16, 1948 in Brockville to Ernest Pritchard and the former Phoebe Spicer. She grew up in Brockville and was educated here, then went to Nova Scotia, where she earned her cooking certificate in 1971.
She lived in Brockville for the past 20 years, but before that she had lived in Alberta, Mississauga, Montreal and Nova Scotia.
She identified with the Anglican Church. Her main interests were her family, grandchildren and close friends, walking, bingo, picnics, fishing, reading and traveling.
Mrs. Spicer is survived by her children, Brian Spicer of Brockville and Tanya Sexton and husband Kevin of Prescott; three sisters, Mary Anne Pritchard of Smiths Falls and Anna O'Shaughnessy and Debbie Brown, both of Brockville; three grandchildren and seven nieces/nephews; and her special friend Daryl Cole of Brockville.
She was predeceased by her parents, brother Peter Pritchard, and sister Phoebe Pritchard in infancy.
Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where on January 26 the funeral was held, with Rev. Gordon Mintz, of St. Paul's Anglican Church, officiating. Burial will be at Maynard Cemetery in the spring.
The pallbearers were Doug Wilkinson Jr., Danny Wilkinson, Patrick O'Shaughnessy, Allen Brown, John Kelford and Gary Spicer.
Memorial donations were directed to the Hospice of Providence Palliative Care and the Canadian Cancer Society.
Carol Jordan, 64
Carol Jean Jordan, 64, died February 12, 2005 at her home after an illness with multiple myeloma lasting 10 years. She was a Kingston resident until moving to Brockville in 1995.
She was born July 7, 1940 in Kingston to Jack Disney and the former Mary Reynolds. She attended Rideau Public School and Queen Elizabeth High School. An avid bowler in her 20s, she was ladies 10-pin champion in the city of Kingston at that time. When she had her sons, she became a devoted "hockey mom."
She worked at Empire Life Insurance and the Kingston Locomotive Works in clerical capacities, then spent the last 25 years of her working life with the Corporation of Kingston, retiring as payroll supervisor. She retired in 1995.
After meeting T. Clare Jordan, she moved to Brockville in 1995. They were married at Wall Street United Church, Brockville, in 1996. She was a member of Wall Street United Church.
Diagnosed with cancer in early 1995, she was given a three-year average life expectancy. She chose to treat her myeloma as an "inconvenience" to living a full and happy 10 years.
She loved her family and the outdoors. She and her husband Clare loved sailing (both racing and cruising) and belonged to the Brockville Yacht Club. They spent fall and spring in Arizona for the past six years and travelled to the Caribbean, Portugal and Alaska.
She belonged to an informal group of cardplaying women for 30 years and also enjoyed birdwatching, camping and tending her garden.
Mrs. Jordan is survived by her husband Clare of Brockville, sons Don and Brian Whitehead of Kingston, stepson John Jordan of Prescott and stepdaughter Carol Lalonde of Johnstown, as well as seven grandchildren, Shawn, Matt and Jessica Lalonde, Megan, Zachary and Ray Whitehead and Karra Jordan, and a great-granddaughter, Katelyn Tuffy.
Also surviving are her cousin Dr. Tom Disney and his family, in Phoenix, Arizona.
She was predeceased by her parents.
Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel, Brockville, on February 14. The funeral was held February 15 at Wall Street United Church, with Rev. Dr. Alan Bennett officiating. Cremation followed the service.
The pallbearers were Ron Tolles, Hank Lammens, Bill Yarranton, Wayne Vosbourgh, Phil Barton and Pat White. The honorary pallbearers were Terry Bagnariol, Bert Meier and Duane Bradford.
Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society and Hospice of Providence Palliative Care.
Velma Linnen, 88
CARDINAL -- Velma Elizabeth Linnen, 88, died February 7, 2005 at Brockville General Hospital.
She was born October 24, 1916, in Inkerman, the daughter of George Riddell and the former Lottie Elliott.
She married Clarence "Dick" Linnen on September 3, 1938 in Iroquois. She became a homemaker and lived in Cardinal, where she belonged to St. Paul's Anglican Church and was a member of its Anglican Church Women group and St. Monica's Guild.
Mrs. Linnen enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing euchre, doing needlework, reading, going on family camping trips and living at the cottage in summertime. They enjoyed winters in Florida after her husband retired.
She is survived by four children, Gary and wife Anna of Cardinal, Glen and wife Lorna of Cardinal, Rick and wife Joan of Charleston Lake and Susan and husband Bill Phillips of St. Catharines; eight grandchildren, Leianna and husband David Ridley, Lisa and husband Stephen Bell, Heidi and husband Dave MacDonald, Nancy and husband Nino Dettorre, Rodney and wife Chris, David and fiancée Karli, and Scott and Elizabeth Phillips; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are two sisters-in-law Jean Riddell of Cornwall and Marjorie Brown of Brockville and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Dick, grandson Bradley Phillips, sisters Jean Miller and Evelyn Riddell, and two brothers, Lloyd and Arnold Riddell.
Friends called at the Marsden McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal, on February 8. The funeral took place February 9 at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Cardinal, with Rev. Doug Hayman officiating. Burial will be at Sandy Hill Cemetery, in Prescott, in the spring.
The pallbearers were David and Scott Phillips, Wilson Hatfield, David Ridley, David MacDonald and Stephen Bell.
Memorial donations were directed to St. Paul's Anglican Church and Hospice of Providence Palliative Care.
