WINTER, Helen Marie (nee Beamish)
Lovingly and tenderly supported by family, friends and caregivers at home, Helen passed away peacefully to her heavenly journey on Monday, November 6th, 2006 in her 83rd year. Treasured sweetheart of Bill, cherished mother of Elizabeth (Dr. James Ranson), David (Lorie), Catherine (Neil Smith) and Nancy (Neil Stirling). Devoted Nana to Heather, Andrew, Meghan, Adam, Barbara, Leighton, Drew, Wendi, Daniel and Lauren. Survived by sisters Margaret Campbell of Oshawa, Lillian Beamish and Katherine Helleur of Whitby and brother, Donald Beamish of Oshawa. Helen would not want her life to be defined by ALS and how this devastating disease took her ability to do her favourite things. However in a bitter-sweet way, it confirmed all her greatest strengths… her determination to do as much for herself and others at all times and to embrace this journey the same as she would any other challenge she faced, her courage, dignity and incredible grace to face this illness in spite of the ravages her body endured, her fierce determination to be as independent as long as absolutely possible, her ability to graciously embrace all the support workers, medical staff and volunteers who helped her maintain quality of life in spite of losing all privacy in her day to day living, her ability to continue to be thoughtful and loving to family, her amazing sense of humour even when facing the darkest hours, her ability to keep on giving whenever she possibly could and the strength and faith to graciously accept God's master plan for her. She had the strength to embrace the outreached hands of her family, friends, church and community. All these images of Mom are how we will remember her...a deeply devoted partner for Bill and committed member of St. Mark's United Church for 59 years, a generous caring sister and a devoted leader in the church and community. Visitation will take place at OSHAWA FUNERAL HOME, 847 King St. West, Oshawa (905-721-1234) on Wednesday, November 8th 2-4 & 7-9 P.M. Celebration of Helen's life will take place at ST. MARK'S UNITED CHURCH, (201 Centre Street South, Whitby L1N 4V7) on Thursday, November 9th, 2006 at 1:00 PM. Interment to take place at GROVESIDE CEMETERY.
Donations in Helen's memory to St. Mark's United Church Building Fund or the ALS Society of Ontario, 265 Yorkland Blvd., Suite 300, North York, Ontario M2J 1S5 would be gratefully received.
