BURGESS, William John
August 13, 1923 - August 4, 2009.
He leaves his wife, Margaret (Craig) and children Peggy (Bill Frankovich) of Brooklin, Jane Burgess (Karl Stevens) of Toronto, and Martha Burgess of Oshawa. Son of John Burgess of Orono and Donalda McRae of Beaverton. Bill was born in Toronto and attended Jarvis Collegiate, the University of Toronto School of Pharmacy and the University of Saskatchewan Faculty of Pharmacy. Bill worked alongside his father at Bloor and Sherbourne Streets in Toronto at Hooper's Drug Store, one of a chain of pharmacies his father was instrumental in founding. On his father's death, Bill took over the Bloor/Sherbourne store and also joined classmate Russ Short in opening Short's Pharmacy in Brooklin, Ontario. In 1971, Bill followed his rural roots, sold Hooper's Drug Store and moved to Ashburn, Ontario so he could work full time at the Brooklin store. Upon Mr. Short's death, his daughter Peggy, the third generation of pharmacists in the family, joined him to work in the store, leaving him more time to pursue his love of nature. During his professional life Bill was an active member of the Durham Region Pharmacists' Association, the Toronto Retail Druggists' Association and the University of Toronto Pharmacy Alumni Association. Bill was a committed Presbyterian and was involved in his churches, first in Toronto (Rosedale Presbyterian Church) and later in Ashburn (Burns Presbyterian Church), both as an Elder and Member of the Board of Managers. He was a driving force behind the restoration of the Old Stone Church in Beaverton, which when restored was designated and listed as a National Historic Site. Having spent many happy hours on the family farm in Orono, Bill developed a love for growing things. He inherited the family wood lot and Christmas tree plantation, buried in the Ganaraska Forest. To care for his wood lot he became an active member of the Ontario Association of Forestry, from which he learned to design renewable forest management plans. He lived long enough to see the first harvest from his plan. His favourite 'big tools' included his Kubota tractor, his Husqvarna chain saws and his old three-ton truck for logging. Bill was an avid member of the Brooklin Horticultural Society. He was a keen gardener who enjoyed his gardens in Ashburn and tried his hand at many gardening projects. They included an apple orchard, the reintroduction of heritage vegetables and berries and growing prize irises. Apart from 'bushwacking', fishing and canoeing occupied as much of his leisure time as he could fit into his active lifestyle. His best loved fishing sites included his cottage at Beaverton and his daughters' cottages at the French River and Gogama. He took part in several trips to the Arctic, including canoeing the Yellowknife River. An inveterate fourth-generation Scot, Bill lived his life according to his Gaelic roots and the McRae motto, FORTITUDINE (with fortitude). He died after a short-fought battle with leukemia. The family would like to thank the staff at Christie Gardens and the community care doctors of the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care for helping make his last wish to die at his home possible. He will be much missed and fondly remembered. Visitation at MEMORIAL CHAPEL FUNERAL HOME, 5295 Thickson Rd. N., Whitby on Sunday, August 9, 2009 from 2:00 p-m to 6:00 p-m. Service at Burns Presbyterian Church, Ashburn, Monday, August 10, 2009, at 3:00 p-m, followed by a reception at the Royal Ashburn Golf Club from 4:00 p-m to 6:00 p-m. The family declines flowers, but donations may be made to: Temmy Latner Centre for Palliatve Care, Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation of Toronto, 1001-522 University Avenue, Toronto, Ontario. M5G 1W7

Knowing in my heart you're now in a better place.
All that I am and have become
came from Joan "one heck of a mom."

To catch up with you at the end of my ride.
