Loreen Beatrice Taylor, 100
ATHENS -- Loreen Beatrice Taylor, 100, a former school teacher, respected community volunteer and artist, died of pneumonia June 4, 2004 at Providence Manor, Kingston, after a short illness.
She was born September 6, 1903 in Delta to William Warner Phelps and the former Ella Halliday. She attended elementary school in Delta, graduated from Athens District High School and earned her teaching certificate at Ottawa Normal School.
She taught for several years in a one-room school in Daytown, outside Delta.
Then on September 18, 1926, she married Lawrence Taylor in Delta and from then on helped her husband in A. Taylor and Son Hardware Store, in Athens. They retired about 30 years ago and her husband died June 14, 1978. Mrs. Taylor continued living in Athens until three years ago, when she moved to Providence Continuing Care Centre in Kingston.
In addition to raising son Ted and daughter Eleanor, Mrs. Taylor belonged to the Anglican Church Women group at her church, Christ Church, Athens, where she also played the organ for many years.
She was a member of the Athens Women's Institute, the Rising Sun Lodge No. 85 of the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Athens Library Board. During the Second World War she joined a Red Cross group.
Mrs. Taylor had painted in watercolours in her teens but put down her brush to raise her family. After her husband's death, she took up painting again, studying under the liberating influence of artist and St. Lawrence College instructor Andrea Green. Even when her eyesight began to fail, she continued to express her inner self through her paintings.
She is survived by her son Ted Taylor and wife Frances of Arnprior and daughter Eleanor Einarson and husband Dawson of Kingston, as well as 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are her brother Bruce Phelps and wife Barbara of Fulton, N.Y., and sister Vivian Schmidt and husband Bill of Adams Centre, N.Y., and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Gerald Phelps (who lived in Lindsay).
Friends were received at the Judson Funeral Home, Athens, on June 7. The funeral was held June 8 in Christ Church, Athens, with Canon Borden Purcell and Rev. Michael Bury of Christ Church, officiating. Burial followed at Athens Cemetery.
