Death Notice (01/06/01)
McCOMB, James Jim Peacefully at his home on Thursday, January 4, 2001. Loving husband and best friend of Pearl (nee Bishop) for 53 years. Loving father of Colleen Powshik (Larry), Kerry Kostenuik (Gordie). Loving and proud grandfather ofKelly, Christine and Brent Powshik. Son of the late James and Arminella McComb. Memorial contributions to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of your choice would be appreciated. Back to the Soo by Jim McComb When memory brings up childhood scenes, of my days up on Bruce Hill, Of that four-room red brick schoolhouse, through the mists I see it still, I hear the school bell ring again, as we dragged ourselves indoors, To tasks not half as interesting as our noisy games outdoors, And our teachers, earth-bound angels, with the patience of a saint, As they taught us to add, subtract and divide, and theres so such word as aint, Of the kindly man who taught me and agreed that I could go, Running home at recess and feed my baby crow, That crow I plucked from the mothers nest, in a big old mile-high tree, Least, it seemed that high to a 10-year old, who returned triumphantly, And he followed me round my paper route, which he knew as well as me, And hed wait in a tree at our swimming hole, as we skinny-dipped wild and free, Then down hed come to my handlebars, and away like the wind wed fly, Hes still in my memory, plain as can be, and hell be there til I die, Youth, like time, does not stand still and Ive roamed to many strange places, But my heartstrings and memory were tied to Bruce hill, to the folk with the friendliest faces, Mother Nature was good to us here in the Soo, the rapids, the river below, On the sky to the west she paints scene after scene, in a breath-taking unending show. And if ever, I see heaven, though the chance is mighty slim, There St. Pete will no doubt ask me if Id like to step on in, I dont want to sound ungrateful Pete, but if its all the same to you, Would you kindly stamp me reject, send me back, back to the Soo. James McComb, July 1998
