Cherished grandmother of Valerie (Paul), Aaron, Zoe, Rose, and Jonah. Proud great-grandmother of Phynnleigh. Ellen Bloomfield (Nee Steinberg)
BLOOMFIELD, Ellen (nee Steinberg). On Monday, March 30, 2015. Born in Montreal, Canada May 11, 1929, Ellen was bitten by the acting bug early in life, performing in children’s theater and hosting her own radio show. As a teenager, she took elocution lessons with fellow Canadian, William Shatner. She later went on to host the Canadian/Eastern US kids’ television show, Romper Room, as “Miss Ellen” before moving to Cincinnati with her family in the mid-1960s. In Cincinnati, Ellen took a Masters of Social Work degree and worked as a Licensed Social Worker with grieving children and geriatric clients, while promoting ethnic diversity in the North Avondale neighborhood where she lived. Ellen loved to write poetry for every occasion, large and small. She also loved to travel and lived abroad in Switzerland, France and England. For about 25 years, she wintered on Sanibel Island, FL; she made many life-long friends there and loved watching wildlife from her lanai. But more than anything else, she loved her family. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Saul; dear sister Evelyn Hamovitch; children Lawrence, Patricia, and Matthew; and beloved granddaughter Sophie. Graveside service on Wednesday, April 1 at 12:00 noon at the Rest Haven Memorial Park, Evendale, Ohio. Dr. Max Jacob Palayew
PALAYEW, Max Jacob M.D., F.R.C.P.(C). It is with infinite sadness that the family of Dr. Max Palayew announces his death on Wednesday, April 1, 2015, after a brief illness. Husband of Eunice Goodman. Father and father-in-law of Dr. Mark Palayew and Dr. Chris Greenaway, Dr. Karen Palayew and Lorne Segal, Danny Palayew and Jocelyn Kapusta. Grandfather of Noah, Matthew, and Julie Segal; Adam, Michael, and Nathan Palayew; Steven and David Palayew. Brother and brother-in-law of Noreen and Aaron Lipsin, Chana Palayew, Mildred Goodman and the late Clermont Pepin, the late Rosalie and the late Norman Namer. He was an extraordinary man; a superb radiologist, a devoted and inspiring teacher, but above all a kind, giving, and compassionate human being. He was a role model and mentor to many of his students, colleagues, and friends; to his family he was and will always be their strength and inspiration. He received his medical degree from l’Université de Montpellier in France and subsequently trained in Radiology at the Jewish General Hospital, the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, and the Cincinnati General Hospital. In 1971 he was appointed Radiologist-In-Chief at the Jewish General Hospital, a position which he held until 1992. He was appointed Professor and Chairman, Department of Radiology, McGill University for consecutive terms from 1977 to 1987. In 2009 he was appointed Emeritus Professor, McGill University. He was a member of numerous professional associations and held Officer roles in many, including National President of the Canadian Association of Radiologists and Administrator of the Board of the Corporation Professionnelle des Médecins du Québec. He was a frequent Visiting Professor at universities throughout North America, Europe and Asia. He received many honours, including the Prix Albert Jutras, awarded by the Société Canadienne Française de Radiologie, “in recognition for an outstanding career and exceptional contributions to Radiology”. Peacefully, on Saturday, April 4, 2015, at the age of eighty-five. Joseph was born in Poland, and, after surviving the Holocaust, lived in Montreal for sixty years. Cherished grandfather of Joshua and Kathleen, Jessica, and Jonathan Weinstein; Michael, and Suzanne Weinstein. Proud great-grandfather of Seth and Jacob. FRAJTAG, Ruta (nee Rajchgot). Peacefully on April 10, 2015 in her 100th year. Wife of the late Aron Frajtag. Beloved mother and mother-in-law of Hannah and Bill Lewkowict, Rena and James Borovay. Cherished Bubby of Leonard and Shelley, David and Laura, Melissa and Chris, Lindsay and Darren, and Karen. Great-grandmother of Sam, Alex, Sarah, Josh, Molly, Aaron, Samantha, Emmett, and Jonah. Sister and sister-in-law of Pavel and Shoshana Rajchgot, Ceisa and the late Yankel Forshpan ,the late Bella and the late Josef Wloski, the late Regina and the late Yankel Korc. She will be missed by her many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Ruta was a resilient and determined woman who, together with Aron, fled her Nazi-occupied home in Poland, survived life in a Soviet labour camp, and journeyed with their young family through Uzbekistan, Poland, and Israel before rebuilding their life in Canada.
