OBITUARY MADELINE-ANN AKSICH, C.M. Peacefully, after a long and heroic battle with cancer at age forty-nine. A proud member of the Order of Canada, Madeline was the founder and longtime president of the International Children's Institute. She was born in Montreal on June 28, 1956, attended Marianopolis College and McGill University, gaining a B.A. in 1978 and and MBA in 1981. She was also a member of the McGill University Senate. After her graduation, she worked as an executive with Via Rail, then as an international business consultant. She also worked tirelessly in the non-profit sector, notably for the Couchiching Institute (where she served on the board of directors from 1986 to 2005), the Montreal Chamber Orchestra, Le Don des Etoiles, the YWCA and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. In 1992, saddened by the war raging in her father's homeland of Croatia, she left her consulting job and founded the International Children's Institute so as to help children cope with the psychological trauma of war. In 2002, she resigned as president for health reasons. Madeline not only managed the institute's programs, she also played a major role in their creation. In addition to her professional work, she was a landscape gardener, a painter, a sportsman, a traveler, and a devoted friend to many dozens of people both in Canada and abroad. Predeceased by her father, Captain Anton Aksich, she is survived by her mother, Kay Orloff-Aksich, her brother Anthony, her sister-in-law Carol, her niece Caroline and her nephew Alexander. She will be mourned and missed by them and by her friends, who loved her and who remain in awe of her courage, her vitality and her indomitable spirit. The family would like to thank: Dr. I. Hings, Dr. B. Goulet, Dr. N. Giannetti, Heather Wood of the V.O.N. and staff of the Montreal General Hospital. Visitation: Thursday, September 29, 5 to 8 p.m., Collins Clarke, 222 Autoroute 20 and Cartier, Pointe Claire. The funeral will take place at St. Edmund of Canterbury Church, 105 Beaconsfield Blvd., Beaconsfield, 2 p.m. Friday, September 30, to be followed by a private interment on the Island of Sipan near Dubrovnik where Madeline spent so many holidays and which she loved so much.
