Peacefully, in his eighty-seventh year, on Tuesday, February 4, 2014. Beloved husband of Sarah Coogan for sixty years. Devoted father and father-in-law of Carol Ann and Paul Flynn, Jeff Macklan and Lori Mayne, Richard Macklan and Stephanie Torchin. Cherished grandfather of Josh and Jonah; Faith, Ryan and Kaitlin; Erin and Joshua. Dear brother and brother-in-law of Irving and Dorothy Macklin, Estelle and Sam Reiter, Phil and Sandy Maclan, Shirley and Seymour Steinman, Mickey and Cynthia Maklin, Ella and the late Dave Macklan, Ruth and the late Morris Maclan, Issie and the late Dorothy Eisenwasser, the late Annie, the late Paul, the late Jack, and brother-in-law of Joe and Renee Coogan, Jenny Coogan, Trudy and Paul Cejas, Jerry Coogan, the late Annie Coogan. Sadly mourned by his nieces, nephews, family and friends. Special thanks to Drs. ROSS-HORNER, Edna (née Cohen). Peacefully on Monday, March 3, 2014. Dearly beloved wife of the late Mayer Ross, and cherished wife of the late Otto Horner. Devoted and treasured mother and mother-in-law of Dr. Melvyn and Ruth Ross of California, and Harvey Ross. Much loved step-mother of Elli and Irwin Horner, and the late Dr. Sharon Horner. Very much loved Bubby of Michelle, Joel, and Matthew; Bradley, Jenna and Eric, and Evan. Adoring Great-Bubby of Shayla. Loving sister and sister-in-law of Helen and the late Alex Smolar, Bernard and Marilyn Cohen, the late Sarah and the late Cecil Steinberg. Edna will be sadly missed by her nieces, nephews, family and all who knew her. BETTER, Helen (née Altow). Suddenly, on Monday, March 3, 2014. Beloved wife of the late Ned Better. Devoted and loving mother and mother-in-law of Robert and Judy, Howard and Bobbi, Mark and Lynda. Loving Bubbie of seven grandchildren. Dear sister and sister-in-law of Bill and Debby Altow of Vancouver; and sister-in-law of the late Clifford and the late Sandra Better. Daughter of the late Anne and the late Morris Altow. She will be sadly missed by her nieces, nephews, family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched. Jack Charles Shayne

SHAYNE, Jack Charles. Peacefully in his eighty-sixth year surrounded by his family on Sunday, March 2 2014. Beloved husband and best friend of Lois Oshry for fifty-seven years. Devoted father and father-in-law of Michael of Boca Raton, Lauren Shayne and Steven Gershonovitch. Cherished “Papa” of Jessica, and Jason Gershonovitch. Brother and brother-in-law of the late Herb and the late May Shayne. Dear brother-in-law of Elinor and the late Beryl Borsook of Toronto. Sadly mourned and fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews, family and many friends. Jack graduated from Sir George Williams University with a B.A. and from McGill University with a B.Com, &. LL.B. He was then admitted to the bars of Quebec and Ontario; eventually joining the law firm of Mendelsohn, Rosentzveig, Shacter and becoming a senior partner. Active in the Montreal Jewish Community, Jack became one of the founding members of the Reconstructionist Synagogue. From 1972-1974 he was President of the Jewish Vocational Services of Montreal. In 1984 he was instrumental in starting the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada, which recently granted their 20,000th wish. In April 2013 he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for his contributions to the Organization. Jack was a caring, kind and generous person, a punster, a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend and a person who touched many lives. Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Murray Baron who was always there for his cousin Jack, and to all the outstanding doctors and nurses in the Nephrology Department of the Jewish General Hospital. Special thanks to his devoted caregivers Elly, Lenie, Marylyn and Michael for three years of care and devotion. Beloved husband of Helen Chopp. Devoted and loving father and father-in-law of Shelley and Andre Engel of Ottawa, Ontario, Mindeleah and Shmuel Pollak of Houston, Texas, Cindy and Eitan Siev of North Miami Beach, Florida, Debbie and Brian Aarenau of Ottawa, Ontario. Adored and cherished Zaidy of thirteen and proud great-grandfather of eight. Predeceased by Anne and Hyman Filler, Jack and Eva Filler, Hyman Filler, Rabbi Yitzchok and Dorothy Filler, Celia and Morris Galet, Rose Fromm, and Hershel Filler. Survived by his dear sister-in-law, Shaindel Filler. Joe will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and by all who knew and loved him. Predeceased by her dear siblings, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Hymie and Claire Benjamin, Lily and Sam Blutstein, Aaron Benjamin; Toby and Saul Appel, Sarah and Eddie Segal.
