Mr. Hector Breland
October 22, 1928 - August 15, 2007

Hector Breland of Candle Lake, SK passed away peacefully at Prince Albert Victoria Hospital on Wednesday, August 15, 2007.

He was born on October 22, 1928 at Section 20, Township 47, Range 7 W3rd, district of D’mour, Sk.

He was the youngest of fourteen children, born to Antoine and Adelaide Breland.

Hector attended school in Leoville, SK.

As a young boy, Hector loved the life of the prairies.

He left school at an early age to work on the farm with his Dad. Fire fighting was Dad’s special forte, he would often regale friends and family with tales of the fire line.

One of Dad’s most memorable moments was in 1970 when Dad found 8 year old Dino Kuenzig who had been missing for 3 days.

Since then, Dad and Dino have remained in contact.

Hector started with the Department of Natural Resources in 1949 in construction.

He was promoted to Road Construction Supervisor in 1957.

Hector was then transferred to Meadow Lake in 1973 to take on the position of Development Coordinator where he was in charge of capital projects, regional road construction and maintenance of Heavy Equipment for construction and fire-fighting.

Hector retired from the D.N.R. in 1984, however, Dad was far from being ready to slow down.

Many of Dad’s close friends benefited from his help, whether it was a calf waiting to be born, or having an extra hand to drive the grain truck.

Mom and Dad moved to Candle Lake, SK in 1997 to be closer to family.

It wasn’t long before he found himself a new job at the Candle Lake Landfill where many a treasure was hauled home.

In the 10 years Dad spent at Candle Lake, he gained a whole a new group of friends.

He filled his winter months ice fishing and visiting from one shack to the next to see if anybody was having any luck, since he wasn’t.

Come summer time, there was never a day when the grandchildren were out of school, that you wouldn’t find one of them spending time with Granddad at the lake.

He spent much of his time building or creating projects, sitting out by the fire visiting with family and friends and sharing his many stories and tales that are fondly remembered by all.

Left to cherish Hector’s memory are his loving wife Gwyn (nee Phillips) of Candle Lake; his four children Barry (Mary) of Prince Albert and their children Kelly, Paige, Colin, Joan of Melfort and her children Tyler, Jordan, Nathan, Clark (Yvonne) of Meadow Lake and their daughter Angelica, Leanne (Jimmy) of Prince Albert and their children Breanna, Bradley; his brother-in-law Clare (Pat) Phillips of Tisdale; numerous nieces and nephews; his very special four-legged friend Vickie.

He was predeceased by his parents Antoine and Adelaide Breland; his sisters Georgina Breland, Madonna Beauchamp, Hortense Lajeunesse, Victorina Gaumond, Marie Antoinette Leach; his brothers Stanilas Napolean Breland, Harvey Breland, Cecil Breland and five infant brothers and sisters. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 20 from River Park Memorial Chapel. The Reverend Rick Martin will officiate. Interment will take place in the Garden of the Last Supper, Prince Albert Memorial Gardens.

It is the family’s request that those wishing to place memorials may do so to the Canadian Cancer Society, the SPCA or Children’s Wish Foundation.

Family and friends may send email condolences to www.riverparkfuneral.ca.
