Caroline Kalthoff
July 8, 1948 - September 15, 2011
Mrs. Caroline Kalthoff (nee Frank), 63 years of Humboldt, passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2011 at Humboldt District Hospital due to complications arising from Diabetes and a stroke. Caroline was born to Joseph and Emily (nee Jaeb) Frank on July 8, 1948 in Humboldt. She attended St. Matthew’s School until grade eight and then graduated from the Humboldt Colligate Institute in 1966. Caroline began to work at Dr. Rooney’s office in Humboldt. Within a year she was swept off her feet by the love of her life and she married Wayne Kalthoff on August 2, 1967 at Willmont. They then moved to the farm near Fulda where they began their farming career. Caroline was very active in the daily operations of the farm working side by side with Wayne. Together they were blessed with three children. Caroline’s duties as domestic engineer were taken seriously and she provided a warm, loving and welcoming home to her family and friends. She was a very hard worker who kept her large vegetable and flower gardens meticulously manicured. She became a Weekender Home Party Sales Rep for many years. In 1992 they moved to Humboldt where she was kept busy with her “moms” running them to appointments, etc. Caroline entered the Office Education Program and graduated in 1999. Her greatest love was to create Christmas wreaths and she gained quite a reputation of making beautiful pieces that she shared with her family and friends. Her family always praised her for her ability to bake the best sweet treats. They could never figure out how she could be such a great baker and not be able to eat any of her creations. Caroline was a very spiritual lady who was private and yet very outgoing and social and loved a good laugh. She would surprise many with an unexpected joke or comment that would crack everyone up. Caroline would join Wayne regularly on a road trip to different parts of Canada and the USA where she would assist him with the farm progress shows or just enjoy some quiet time resting and her trip usually included a good day or two of shopping. In 2007 Caroline began employment with Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home as a funeral/office assistant. As with any job she took on, Caroline gave her best, everything was always done to the highest level of perfection. Many families commented on her compassion and friendliness shown to them. Caroline was always very proud of her family and their accomplishments and loved them very much. Caroline was the captain of her team of sisters - enjoying shopping sprees or just talking on the phone and will always have a strong bond with them. She always kept in very close contact with her extended family if not daily then on a weekly basis. Always giving and loving unconditionally was what made Caroline the happiest. Caroline will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her husband of 44 years, Wayne Kalthoff of Humboldt; their three children and three grandchildren: Wesley (Colleen) Kalthoff of Humboldt; Denise (Barry) Nett and children, Chelsea and Colby of Prince Albert; and Darrell (Shauna) Kalthoff and daughter, Sierra of Saskatoon; her mother, Emily Frank of Middle Lake; three sisters: Marci (Fabian) Paydli of Humboldt, Dolores (David) Hauber of Cudworth and Colette (Pat) Miller of Bonnyville, AB; sisters and brothers-in-law: Karen (Ralph) Fleischhacker, Neil (Mary Ann) Kalthoff of Calgary and Myles (Sherry) Kalthoff; and by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Caroline was predeceased by her father, Joseph Frank and parents-in-law, Sylvester Kalthoff and Lydia (Henry) Kloppenburg. The Funeral Mass for Caroline was held on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. from St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt, concelebrated by Fr. Emile April, Fr. Denis Phaneuf and Fr. Bernard Stauber. Others taking part in the service were: cross bearer Orrin Fleischhacker, scripture readers Bradley Hauber and Dana McKinnon, intentions Annette Engel, gift bearers, Chelsea Nett, Colby Nett and Sierra Kalthoff, music ministry: director Loretta Schugmann, organist Dolores Hinz and soloist Norman Duerr accompanied by St. Augustine R. C. Choir. Urn bearers were: Wayne Kalthoff, Wesley Kalthoff, Denise Nett and Darrell Kalthoff. Honorary pallbearers were “All those who shared in Caroline’s life”. An honor guard was formed by the staff of Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home Staff. Interment followed at St. Augustine R. C. Cemetery Humboldt. Memorial donations in Caroline’s memory may be directed to Canadian Diabetes Association or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan. Judy Friesen
August 19, 1942 - August 27, 2011
Our beautiful mom passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 27. She is survived by her loving husband, Frank, of 50 years. She is also survived by daughters Rhonda (Kelly) Sage and Karen (Dave) Carlson; granddaughters Anndrea (Jair) Poppelwell, Holly Carlson, Samantha (Adrian) Salahub, and Emma Carlson; great grandchildren Franchesca, Elliot, Zachariah,and Rachel; sisters Eleanor (Walter) Kiel, Linda (Garry) Everatt, Violet (Rick) Hiebert, brothers Keith (Maybelle) Playter, Ross (Joyce) Playter, her twin brother Grant (Joan) Playter, brother-in-law Harry Everatt, sisters-in-law Teana (Cornie) Ginter and Agatha Hildebrand and many many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by parents Gertrude and Grant Playter, parents-in-law Peter and Aganatha Friesen, sister Edythe Everatt and brothers Kenneth and Earl Playter, brother-in-law Cornie Hildebrand and brother-in-law Peter Friesen and wife Dorothy.
Judy loved playing cards, visiting with family and friends, and enjoyed many holidays to far away places. She was a fabulous cook and baker; there was always room for one more at her table. Her sewing, knitting and crocheting were often works of art, and always works of love.
The family extends much gratitude to the staff at St. Paul’s, Saskatoon City and Humboldt hospitals for their respectful and compassionate care, especially in mom’s last hours.
A memorial service was held at 2:00pm, Thursday, September 1 at the Westminster United Church, 708 13th Ave. (off Main St. N), Humboldt.

William Kirkness
February 9, 1918 - August 28, 2011
Mr. William “Bill” Kirkness, 93 years, of Central Parkland Lodge, Lanigan passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2011 at his residence. Bill was born in the Lanigan District to James and Luella (Nee Mertz) Kirkness on February 9, 1918. He obtained his education at the Elmsville School. Bill loved the outdoors and spending time with animals out in the nature. He worked in the area helping farmers when needed and eventually purchased his own land. In the early 50’s Bill decided to follow his love of the out doors and moved to Westlock, AB and worked on a road construction crew. This allowed him to purchase a half section of land in the Manning area. It was very treed, but that didn’t discourage him, he was able to clear the land and began farming it. Bill then sold his land for his dream job working a trap line at Twin Lakes a life style he thoroughly enjoyed being outdoors surrounded by nature and animals. For a short period he was listed with the army and spent time in Dundurn and with the Artillery Camp in Shilo, MB. For the majority of his life he was blessed to have Ruby in his life his confidant and companion together they shared many happy times. After retirement Bill remained in North Star, AB until 2008 when he moved to Lanigan and lived with his sister Grace for seven months and then moved to Central Parkland Lodge. He adjusted well living in the lodge and cherished his visits from his special nieces, they kept each other on their toes with jokes and stories. Bill had a wonderful sense of humour that kept everyone in stitches. A free spirited person who loved to be alone but yet was everyone’s friend as he loved people equally as much. He loved to play the Harmonica and had many varieties of them and continued to entertain everyone right up to days before his passing. Bill will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his sister, Grace Leggott of Lanigan; nine nieces and nephews: Tom (Marg) Leggott of Regina, Luella (Don) Sather of Saskatoon, Isabel (Jim) Bowman of Guernsey, Irene (Ken) Briske of Jansen, Nancy (Ralph) Johnston of Martensville, Al (Dee) Leggott of Saskatoon, George (Carollynn) Leggott of Saskatoon and Lisa (Clark) Huard of Mayfair; niece-in-law Carole Leggott of Melville; and by numerous great nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his parents James and Luella Kirkness; brother and sister: Anson (Kay) Kirkness, Eva (Earl) Leggott; nephew John Leggott; brother-in-law Harold Leggott and by his companion Ruby Weir. A Funeral Service was held on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. from Knox United Church Lanigan. Officiated by, Jeanette Warrian. Others taking part in the service were: organist Grace Strong, words of remembrance were shared by Isabel Bowman, Irene Briske and Carol Neugebauer. Obituary read by Lue Sather. Urn bearer Al Leggott. Honorary pallbearers were “All those who shared in Bill’s life”. Interment will follow at a later date at Manning, AB. Marian Burton
March 8, 1930 – August 26, 2011
Mrs. Marian Burton, age 81 of St. Mary’s Villa Humboldt passed away peacefully at her residence on Friday, August 26, 2011 with her husband at her side. Marian was born to Stephen and Josephine (nee Steffens) Kehrig on March 8, 1930 in the Bruno district the 7th child of a family of 12. She attended St. Quentin School to Grade 9. Her mother passed away at that time and Marian stayed home to help her father care for her siblings and tend to domestic duties. In 1950 Marian travelled to McHenry, Illinois to visit her aunt and uncle. While there she worked at the Admiral factory and later returned to Bruno. It was at a Church Youth Rally that she met the love of her life George Burton and within a short time George made his way back to Bruno to attend a dance where Marian and George danced through life together for 54 years as they were wed on October 29, 1956. They were blessed with four children. Marian was a very involved in her children’s activities, including being a 4-H leader. She always made sure her children challenged their minds by introducing them to a variety of groups especially visiting art exhibits. Marian always worked side by side with George and loved her life on the farm. She earned “Select Seed Grower” status along side with her husband, which supplemented their commercial grain operation. The family moved to Regina for five years, returning to the farm in 1981, where she took an active part. Marian loved being with people and was very active in many organizations such as: executive position with Humboldt and Regina CWL, Band Parents’ Association and Track and Field Association to name a few. Later in life she was very active with the Museum Board, Muenster Diocese Rural Life Committee, Social Justice Committee, St. Augustine Parish Choir, a founding board member of the Good Neighbor Store and she spent 15 years on the Board of Humboldt Co-op. Marian did find time to enjoy her flower gardens and would admire their beauty. We will miss Marian’s infectious smile that would light up a room when she entered it. Marian’s warm gentle, friendly caring personality will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her husband of 54 years George Burton of Humboldt; four children: Philip (Carla) Burton of Prince George, BC and children, Eric, Nicole Tashi, Gabrielle and Bart and their families; Peter Burton (Shelley Phipps) of Halifax and children, Stefan, Cameron, and Anna; Barbara Burton (Roger Foui) and children, Megan and Susan Burton (Rick Lowell) and children, Jackson and Alexandra all of Saskatoon; one sister and three brothers: Ben (Mary) Kehrig of Tisdale, Henry (Elizabeth) Kerhig of Prince Albert, Olga (Richard) Reineke of Humboldt and Gregor (Hermina) Kehrig of Bruno; four sisters-in-law: Mary Kehrig of Bjorkdale, Marie Kehrig of Tisdale, Lizette Kehrig and Mary Kehrig both of Saskatoon; one brother-in-law John (Zenny) Burton of Regina and numerous nieces and nephews. Marian was predeceased by her parents Stephen and Josephine Kehrig; one sister and six brothers Joseph, Arnold, Alois (Henrietta), Thekla Doetzel, Edwin, Werner and Francis. A Prayers Service was held on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at 8:00 p.m. Presided by Nestor Trach. Others taking part in the service were organist Sr. Colette Kaller, scripture readers Ron Kehrig and Eileen Chuey, and eulogist Duane Guina. The Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Concelebrated by, Fr. Lawrence Demong O.S.B., Abbot Peter Novecosky O.S.B., Fr. Joe Ackerman O.S.B. and Fr. Ralph Kleiter. Others taking part in the service were: cross bearer Ruth Kehrig, scripture readers Arlene Pederson and Joan Kehrig, intentions Edna Dmyterko, gift bearers Olga Reineke and Ben Kehrig, and altar servers Ed Zintel and Leo Altrogge. An honor guard was formed by the Humboldt CWL. Honorary pallbearers were “All those who shared in Marian’s life”. Pallbearers were: Mark Kehrig, Lawrence Kehrig, Mitchell Kehrig, Don Kehrig, Leonard Kehrig and Paul Kehrig. Both services were held from St. Augustine R.C. Church Humboldt. Interment followed at St. Augustine R.C. Cemetery. Mary Hagen
November 25, 1930 - August 26, 2011
Mrs. Mary Hagen, age 80 of St. Mary’s Villa Humboldt passed away peacefully at her residence on Friday, August 26, 2011. Mary was born on November 25, 1930 to Andrew and Mary (nee Rutchuck) Nicholat in the Fosston District. She took her education at Mallard School and then began working at the Wadena Bakery, a job she excelled in and little did she know this job would expand her talents as she raised eight children. On June 8 1952 she married Raymond Hagen. Together, they began a mixed farm on the land Raymond’s grandfather previously owned in the Rose Valley area. She was a very active partner in the day to day operations of the farm. Mary always made time for company and usually on a daily basis would have someone sitting at the kitchen table sharing stories. They were blessed with one daughter and seven sons, so needlessly to say she produced large vegetable and fruit gardens. These gardens were used for necessity and meditation where she would escape and enjoy some quiet spiritual times. Mary was a natural homemaker and taking on the role of domestic engineer came very easy. She loved to cook and that showed in her delicious dishes she would create that filled the house with wonderful aroma for the children to remember including the 48 loaves of bread she would bake on a weekly basis. Preparing the Ukrainian traditional meals for Christmas and Easter brought her much pleasure as her family would sit around the large table and enjoy her cooking. Mary was a very strong hard working woman who wasn’t afraid to get dirty, but when it was time to be seen in the public she always presented herself with elegance and beauty. She would make sure not a hair was out of place and her lipstick was on. In 1994 Raymond and Mary retired to Muenster where she continued to enjoy her domestic duties. Due to failing health Mary had to move to St. Mary’s Villa where she resided until her passing. A Public Visitation was held on Monday, August 29, 2011 from 8:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home. A Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. from Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home Hwy 5 East Humboldt. Officiated by, Jenny Irwin. Others taking part in the service were: organist, Pauline Besharah and words of remembrance were shared by Katelynn Hagen. Honorary pallbearers were “Mary’s grandchildren and great grandchildren”.
