Elmer George Maurer
On Friday, July 20, 2007, Elmer George Maurer of Weyburn, passed away at the Regina General Hospital at the age of 80 years. Predeceased by his parents, George and Nora, brothers, Victor and Ernie; special family, Joan Tanner; brothers-in-law: Edwin Turnbull, Emil Stelter, Frank Rumpel, Wesley Biech, Alex Bankier, Fred Deobald; sisters-in-law: Irene Deobald, Frieda Biech, and Ruby Maurer. Elmer is survived by his loving wife of 54 and one half years, Margaret and their family: Evelyn Maurer of Weyburn and her children, Jill and Jessica; Gordon (Dawn) Maurer of Weyburn and their children, Ryan, Jenna and Adam; Brenda (Allan) Haukeness of Hazlet and their children, Katelyn, and Lora; Doug (Joanne) Maurer of Weyburn and their children, Jeremy, Brittni and Zachary; Bob (Wendy) Maurer of Weyburn and their children, Amber, Mikie, Shenay and Tori; special family, Bert Tanner and children, Kimberley (Rene) Nicholay, Nicole, and Tanner; brother and sisters: Clarence (Jean) of Weyburn, Viola Stelter of Moosomin, Doris Turnbull of Swift Current, Mabel Beierle of Calgary, AB, Ruby Rumpel of Swift Current; brother-in-law, Otto Biech; sisters-in-law, Hilda Biech, Reta Bankier, Josie Biech and Ann Maurer; and many nieces and nephews. Elmer was the eldest son of eight children born to George and Nora Maurer on November 6, 1926. he attended school at St. Boswells. On November 30, 1952 he married Margaret Biech. The family was blessed with five children as they settled in the Grassdale district, where they rented land and raised cattle. In 1966, he purchased a farm south of Weyburn. He moved the family to that farm in 1970 and continued to grain and cattle farm until his passing. His commitment to farming was unbending. As soon as his children were old enough (age 7) they were assigned their own piece of equipment to follow him around the field. Elmer was an independent, strong willed man, who knew exactly what he liked. He loved to farm and to work with cattle. He was a very proud member and active shareholder of the Weyburn Inland Terminal. He also sat on the board of the PFRA Brokenshell pasture #2 at one time. In the spring, he would take the boys (who got to skip school) so they could go to the PFRA headquarters with a thermos in one hand and bucket of sandwiches in the other, to get cattle ready for pasture. He enjoyed visiting and socializing with neighbors and the community ranchers. Elmer spent much time with his grandchildren. He had a real sense of humor and loved to tease them. He enjoyed several family trips to Williston, ND where he watched the grandchildren swim and got caught up on the latest farming news. Elmer farmed until the end just the way he wanted it. His determination and will to teach his children to be independent and hard working was a great accomplishment. He will be lovingly remembered by all he knew and loved. Funeral service was held Tuesday, July 24, at 2:00 p.m. from Zion Lutheran Church, Weyburn, with Pastor Martin Olson officiating. Joanne Maurer gave the eulogy. Interment followed in Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. All those in attendance were considered to be Honorary Pallbearers. The Active Pallbearers were: Ryan Maurer, Adam Maurer, Jeremy Maurer, Zachary Maurer, Rene Nicholay and Daryl Maurer. Roy Hillstead
Roy Hillstead, late of Weyburn, passed away in the early morning of July 20, 2007 at the Pasqua Hospital in Regina. His brief and sometimes difficult battle with lung cancer ended very peacefully with his brother, Morris, and sister, Marion, by his side Roy was born on March 31, 1929 in Oungre, the second child and second son to Ted and Bessie Hillstead. Roy was predeceased by his parents, Bessie and Ted, one brother, Ken, his brother-in-law Bern Polasek, his mother-in-law, Anna Schmale, and by his wife, Esther. Roy leaves to mourn his passing and celebrate his life his beloved, Juliann Parsons of Weyburn; his son, Bruce, of Edmonton, AB and his family, Chris, and Alana (Terroll) and her children, Mathew, Kaitlyn and Madison; his daughter, Lindy (Ron) Wilkinson of Yellow Grass, and their children, Jeff and Tyler (Jennie); brothers and sisters: Harold (Dorothy) of Regina, Sask; Glenna (Arlo) Johnson of Prince George, B.C.; Marion (George) Windrum of Regina; Eunice Polasek of Regina, and Morris (Fern) of Lethbridge, AB; sister-in-law, Marlene Hillstead of Weyburn, special aunt, Mabel Evert, and many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends. Roy began his working life with a seismograph company covering many areas of Alberta and Saskatchewan. He and a friend then operated a leased service station in Medicine Hat, AB for a couple years. In 1960 he returned to Saskatchewan where he operated several businesses in the oilfield industry, often with his brother Ken. He took great pride in the ownership of his fleets of oil trucks and semis. He was well known in the business community as the owner of the Bow Manor Hotel in Oxbow and subsequently the Big J Motel and then the 385 Motel in Weyburn. He also owned Don's Plumbing and Heating. He received his pilot's license in the 70's and was active in the Weyburn Flying Club. He loved planes, trucks and cars, and football. Roy enjoyed a long association with the Elks Club and advanced through the chairs to become Exalted Ruler. Funeral service was held on Thursday, July 28, in the Weyburn Free Methodist Church with Rev. John Ferrier officiating. Interment followed at Hillcrest Cemetery. Pallbearers were his niece and nephews: Maureen Lamont, Don Hillstead, Rick Hillestad, Darren Polasek, Del Windrum and Doug Windrum. Gordon "Gus" Springer
Passed away peacefully in Ottawa surrounded by family on Friday July 20, 2007 at 86 years. Beloved husband of Elta (Wickey) for 64 years. Survived by brothers Glenn (Ellen) of Tillsonburg, ON, and Gerald (Bernice) of Moose Jaw, and many cousins. Devoted father to sons Raymond and Gary and daughters Cheryl, Joanne, and Sandra. Proud grandfather of Steven, Shelly, Michael, and Alena and six great grandchildren. Gordon was born in Weyburn on August 23,1920. Gus joined the air force after graduating from Weyburn Collegiate and retired from the RCAF after 28 years of service. Gordon then accepted a position with the Public Service of Canada, working another 14 years for both Public Works and Canada Post Headquarters, retiring for the second time in 1982. Gordon and Elta were fortunate to have spent the next 20 winters in Florida. A special thanks to the doctors and nurses of the Montfort Hospital. A Memorial Service to be held at a later date. In memoriam, donations to the Montfort Hospital Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
Georgina Ray
On Sunday, July 22, 2007, Georgina Ray, widow of Alan Ray, passed away at the Fillmore Health Centre. Georgie was born in Limerick on January 26, 1924 and lived most of her life in the Creelman district. Georgie was predeceased by her parents, Magnus and Matilda (nee: Kinchen) Elias; her husband, Alan A. Ray in 1988, her sister, Ruth; brother, Fred; in-laws: Arthur and Gertrude Ray, Margaret and Chester Ray, Leslie (Chief) Ray, Howard Allingham, Toby Phillips, Ethel Howe, Bernice Rich and nephew, Chris Gottfried. Her memory will be cherished by her children; Aubrey (Betty) Ray, Weyburn; Lorraine (Lyle) Dempsey, Heward; her grandchildren; Bart (Joan) Dempsey, Brenda (Darcy) Suchy, Bonnie Dempsey and Brad Dempsey (fiancé Megan Johnston); great grandchildren; Garrett, Caitlin and Blake Dempsey; her brothers, Art (Irene) Kinchen, Bud (Joan) Elias, Mick (Donna) Elias; her sisters, Penny Phillips, Ida Allingham, Doris (Doug) Crawford, Jean (Al) Gottfried; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Elias and Edith Ray; as well as her nieces and nephews. A Graveside Service wwas held on Friday, July 27, at 7:00 p.m. at the Golden Gates Cemetery, Creelman, with Don Wiberg officiating. Ernestina Vlaj
Ernestina Vlaj passed away at the Weyburn Special Care Home on July 20, 2007 at the age of 92 years. She is survived by her son Victor, of Campbell River, BC, granddaughter, Shelley (Ryan) Michaluk, great grandchildren Heather and Ross of Calgary, AB. She is also surivived by her grandson Glen (Wendy) Vlaj and great grandsons Rob and Chris of Campbell River, BC. She was predeceased by her husband Ludwig (Louis) and her son Walter. Ernestina was born in Stukovic, Slovenia (Yugoslavia), on May 13, 1915. She immigrated to Canada with her husband Ludwig in March of 1938. The family lived in many small communities in Saskatchewan before settling in Weyburn in 1966. She was a devoted and loving mother with many hobbies including knitting and baking. She was an excellent cook and always made sure Victor's family had plenty of fresh bread, perogies, cabbage rolls, pies and cakes. She especially enjoyed playing cards at family gatherings. She worked in the Weyburn nursing home as a housekeeper for over 10 years. In 1999, her son Victor moved to Campbell River, BC and she would look forward to visiting every Easter. She lived in the Imperial Plaza for about 40 years, before moving to the Weyburn Special Care Home in January, 2006. The family would like to thank Dr. Fong and the staff at the Weyburn Special Care Home for their care and compassion. A Memorial Service was held at the Hastings-Dionne Funeral Home Chapel in Weyburn, on Thursday, July 26 at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. John Ferrier officiating. A private family interment followed in Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Weyburn General Hospital, or a charity of the donor's choice. Mary Alberta Wilson
December 28, 1914-July 22, 2007
Mary Alberta Wilson (nee White) passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 22, 2007 in Cremona, AB. Mary was born on the family homestead west of Yellow Grass. She married Norman Wilson of Weyburn in 1938. Mary was predeceased by Norman in January 1990. Mary is survived by her son Wayne (Elaine), grandson Doug, as well as two sisters and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary will be lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
Thomas Edward Huston
Thomas Edward of Weyburn, passed away July 24, 2007 at the age of 93 years. Tommy was predeceased by his mother and father, Mary and Frank Huston, one daughter, Audrey Downs, two sisters, Lottie Pearson and Jean Huston, niece Lorraine, and by his wife, Bertha on Nov. 26, 2006. Left to cherish his memory are his family: daughter, Mary Ann (Dan) McDonald of White City, and their daughters, Danielle (Glen) Calibaba and daughter, Hannah, and Heather (Brent) Anderson and children, Brooklyn and Ty, son, Roger (Norma) Huston of Saskatoon, and their daughters, Jennifer and Lisa Huston, Audrey's husband, Gary Downs of Ottawa, ON and their children, Tammy (Tim) Armour and daughters, Kristin (Andrew), Katelyn and Kayla, Greg (Jody) Downs and son Christopher, Darcy (Jane) Downs and son Jesse; nephew, Robert Pearson; two brothers-in-law, Norvald (Helen) Flaaten and Scotty Flaaten, two sisters-in-law, Gladys Flaaten and Laura Flaaten, all of Weyburn; nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and nephews, and many cousins and friends. Thomas Edward Huston was born November 28, 1913 on a farm 10 miles northwest of Weyburn, to Frank and Mary Huston. He grew up on the farm along with his sisters, Lottie and Jean, and attended school in McTaggart. Tommy would catch the "Soo Line" to go to Weyburn. They attended the United Church in McTaggart. He worked on the family farm as a young man. In the 'dirty 30's' jobs were few and hard to find so Tom went to Vancouver where he walked the streets looking for work, which was scarce there too. He eventually found work at a dairy farm on Sea Island. Coming back to Saskatchewan, Tom again worked on the farm. In 1937 there was no crop as it was too dry, so he took a job at Standard Dairy for several years before going overseas to War. While working as a milkman he met Bertha Flaaten, and they were married on July 12, 1941 in Weyburn. Tom joined the Army in 1942, and in August 1943 he went overseas on the Queen Mary, leaving his wife and daughter, Audrey behind. He served in engineering infantry. Tom spent time in England, Italy and France. He was wounded twice during the war. Tom felt very fortunate to be able to return when so many of his comrades did not. He returned home on the Queen Elizabeth, arriving in Regina on New Year's Eve, 1945. After the war, Tom worked as a steam engineer at the Power House at the Saskatchewan Hospital for 33 years, retiring in 1978. Tom had a strong personal faith. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and was very involved on church council, serving in various capacities for 45 years. He gave freely of his time and energy to keep the church grounds and building in good order, as well as singing in church choirs. Tom had a strong commitment to his community. He felt a responsibility to be involved, and in doing so, giving back to the community. He enjoyed involvement in many organizations including: the Weyburn Red Wings, Minor Hockey, Weyburn Figure Skating Club, Minor Baseball, Weyburn Chamber of Commerce, the Royal Canadian Legion and the Young Fellows Club. All of these organizations honored Tom with numerous awards. Most recently Tom was honored in the naming of Huston Road. Tom had a deep appreciation of family and friends. He was so proud of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He valued the friendships he made in his church community over the years. A special thanks to the staff of Crocus Villa and Tatagwa View for the care provided over the past several months. Also thank you to Dr. Philip Fong and Dr. Allan Fong for their wonderful care. Tom loved life and lived it to the fullest. He was blessed with many good years. He was a brother, husband, father, uncle, grandpa and friend to many. He was a good man. We will miss him. Funeral service was held, Monday, July 30, at 2:00 p.m. from Zion Lutheran Church, Weyburn, with Pastor Marjorie McLeod officiating. Daughter-in-law, Norma Huston gave the eulogy, the scripture lessons were read by granddaughters: Tammy Armour, Heather Anderson and Lisa Huston and nieces, June and Holly Fletcher sang, How Great Thou Art. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion held a Last Post Service. Interment will be at a later date in Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn. Gail Lynn DeBruyne
Gail Lynn DeBruyne passed away on Monday July 23, 2007 at the age of 60 years. Gail was predeceased by her father, Ted Culling; sisters, Linda Jones and Valerie Beischel; and brother, Brian Culling. Gail is survived by her beloved husband, Allan DeBruyne; son, Kelly (Cathy) DeBruyne, Tyson, Meghan and Dayna; son, Trevor (Kendra) DeBruyne, Jessica, Jasmine and Levi; daughter, Paula (Jeff) Nergard, Kayla; son, Tim (Janalee) Emry and Angel baby on the way; her parents, Jean and Wilfred O'Connor; sister, Janice (Steven) Blackmore; brother, Kevin O'Connor; many brother and sister in laws, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Gail was born on January 12, 1947 in Radville, to Jean and Ted Culling. She was the oldest of five children. Gail grew up and graduated in Ceylon in 1965. She then moved to Regina where she began working at the Pasqua Hospital for a short period of time before moving back to Ceylon where she met and married her husband of 41 years, Allan. Ceylon is where they made their home and raised their four children, Kelly, Trevor, Paula and Tim. Family being so very important to Gail,(her husband, her kids, her parents, her sisters and brother) there were always family gatherings for every occasion and lots of good times. Getting together with her sisters for weekends was always guaranteed fun; they were very close and loved to spend as much time as possible together. Gail had many talents; she was an excellent cook, always making everyone's favorites. Everyone was always welcome to enjoy a meal anytime. She was also an amazing gardener, she could grow a garden big enough to make sure everyone that came to visit got fresh vegetables to take home. Gail was such a giving person. When you left her house you usually took a book, fresh buns or bread, pickles or salsa and always a "thanks for coming" with a smile. She never missed a birthday, no matter how near or far away a person lived and she always had a gift on hand whenever she would go and visit her friends and family. She had an abundance of friends both young and old, loving all walks of life. When Gail got sick she wanted all of her friends to continue to come and go, and they did that up until her passing. Gail was actively involved in the community, supporting all the local events. She also kept herself busy with her love of crocheting, music, reading, curling, playing cards, collecting angels, traveling and trips to the casino. In 1996 Gail decided to take a job as a hostess on bus trips for Mr. Canada. What a perfect job for the perfect hostess. Grandkids were always welcome at Grandma's house and all of them her angel babies. Gail will be so very missed by all that knew and enjoyed her love. Gail was very strong in her faith; she told everyone that she will be in a better place and with her sisters again; so let's all take comfort in being part of her life. Gail enjoyed 60 great years. Prayers were held at Prairie Pride Centre, Ceylon, on Thursday, July 26, at 7:00 p.m. The funeral service was held on Friday, July 27, at the Prairie Pride Centre, Ceylon, with Father Prince Kurisinkal celebrant. Tony Dolinski
On Sunday, July 22, 2007, Tony Dolinski age 79 years, passed away peacefully at the Regina General Hospital with his brother Fred, nephew Martin and friends by his side. He was predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Lena Dolinski; three brothers: Joseph, Alex and Stanley Dolinski; and sister-in-law, Nettie Dolinski. Tony is survived by his brother, Fred Dolinski, Weyburn; his nephews: Alan (Diane) Dolinski and their sons, David and Ian, Martin (Michele) Dolinski and Marvin Dolinski, all of Vancouver, BC; the Szwetz family, as well as numerous cousins and friends. Tony was born in Regina on January 30, 1928. They lived in Montmartre and attended school in Wolseley. In 1942, he moved with his father, mother and brothers to Cedoux. He worked for rural telephones for about four years. He then spent time working for the R.M. of Wellington for eight years. Tony farmed with his brother Fred up until the time of his passing. He was a member of the third degree Knights of Columbus and was a long time member of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Weyburn. Tony enjoyed curling, playing cards with friends and spending time with friends for coffee. He also enjoyed farming and going to Weyburn Red Wing hockey games. Prayers were held at RD Family Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, on Wednesday, July 25, at 7:00 p.m. The funeral service was held on Thursday, July 26, at St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. with Father Leonard Romanow and Father Gerry Bauche celebrants. The active pallbearers were: Andrew Hutyra, David Hutyra, Steven Szwetz, Kevin Szwetz, Rod Audette and Brian Lee. Interment followed at Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn. Ruth Bakken

It is with sadness we announce the sudden passing of Ruth Bakken on the afternoon of August 13, 2007 in the Weyburn General Hospital. Ruth has been predeceased by her her husband, Knut; parents, Thor and Inga Lee; sisters: Ida Vreim, Selma Lee and Esther Toovey; brothers: Melvin Lee, Martin Lee, Alfred Lee and Ted Lee; two sons-in-law: Wayne Schienbein and Chris Davis; two grandsons, Brent and Ryan Schienbein. Left to mourn are her four daughters: Gail Davis of Winnipeg, MB and son Scott; Brenda Taylor of Calgary, AB and sons Brad and Greg; Linda (Bert) Olson of Regina; Karen (Louis) Vermette of Winnipeg, MB; two sisters: Yvonne (Clarence) Steinke and Olga Dale; and one brother, Maurice Lee. In her younger years, Ruth attended Flaata and Torquay Schools; she continued her education at the Lutheran Collegiate Bible Institute (LCBI) in Outlook. After graduating from LCBI, Ruth was employed by St. Joseph's Hospital in Estevan as a nurse's aid. During her tenure at St. Joseph's she roomed and boarded with Peter and Maude Bakken, met their son Knut, which changed the course of her life. They were married November 22, 1949. For the first six years of their marriage they lived in Bromhead and in 1956 they moved to the Bakken farm homestead where they lived for nine years. Their marriage was blessed with four daughters, Gail 1951, Brenda 1952, Linda 1955 and Karen 1957. In 1965 the farm was sold and the family moved to Weyburn. While the girls were growing up, Ruth worked casual positions at the Weyburn General Hospital. After the girls left home, Ruth trained as a home care worker. A career she enjoyed for approximately 15 years. In 1998, as Knut's health declined they sold their home of 33 years, held the traditional auction sale and relocated to Bison Manor. After Knut's death in 2001, Ruth's health began to decline which prompted her move to the Weyburn Special Care Home in 2002, where she resided until Monday, August 13, 2007. Funeral service was held Friday, August 17, at 10:00 a.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, with Pastor Jodie Pfeifer officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. The pallbearers were: Duane Bakken, Ken Bakken, Curtis Steinke, Karl Kleppe, Barry Dale and Bert Olson.
