Martha Franko
August 10, 1922 - March 18, 2012
FRANKO – Martha was born on August 10, 1922 on the family farm near Springside, SK to Alex and Palahna (nee Shumay) Derow the seventh child in a family of 12. Martha attended Springside School and helped out at home. She married Michael Franko on October 10, 1948 at Whitesand Church. They moved to Prince George for a brief time and then their prairie roots brought them back to Watson, Saskatchewan where they made their home and raised their family of four. Martha was a very dedicated to her faith. She is one of the two last remaining members of the St. Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Watson. She worked very hard to keep the church alive and was very active in the church’s women’s association. The Ukrainian heritage was very important to her and she continued to provide wonderful meals and celebrations in the traditional Ukrainian way. As her health started to fail she would continue to try to carry the traditions on. Her family brought her the greatest joy especially at Christmas when everyone would come home. Martha was a very giving person no one left her home empty handed usually with a very tasty care package. If you happen to attend the Easter Basket Blessing celebration at the church Martha would make sure you left with either a painted Easter Egg, Pussy Willow branch or a wonderful loving hug. “Baba” to everyone, she was famous for her weed-free garden and sharing the bounty and her super-sour dill pickles. Then came bingo, playing cards and loving her grand and great grandchildren. Martha will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her four children, 10 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren: CAROLE and Doug Haussecker of Watson and family Jim and Jodi Haussecker and children Dylan and Connor of Watson and Lana and Derek Woulfe and children Hunter, Jaden and Trey of Marean Lake; IRIS and Gordon Dempster of Hudson Bay and family David Harcourt of Edmonton, Scott Dempster and daughter Christine and Kyle Dempster all of Saskatoon; DAN Franko of Watson and family Trish and Wayne Nordquist and son Lucas, Todd Franko and Amy Franko all of Calgary, AB; and HOWARD and Janice Franko of LeRoy and family Joey Franko and Jamie and Marlys Franko and children Brynn and Micah all of Edmonton, AB; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Martha was predeceased by parents Alex and Palahna Derow; husband Mike; and her 11 siblings: Mary, Bill, John, Polly, Ann, Fred, Metro, Nellie, Mike, Peter and Nick; and members of the Franko family. A Prayer Service was held on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. A Funeral Service was held on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 10:00 a.m., officiated by Very Rev. Archpriest Peter Wasylenko. Others taking part in the service were: cantor, Jason Kopan; palomar, Nick Kaweski; cross bearer, Doug Haussecker and banner bearer Gordon Dempster. Words of Remembrance were shared by Lana Woulfe. Pallbearers were: David Harcourt, Jim Haussecker, Joey Franko, Scott Dempster, Kyle Dempster and Derek Woulfe. Both services were held from St. Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Watson. Interment followed at St. Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery, Watson. Memorial Donations in Martha’s memory may be directed to St. Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery or Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan. Anthony "Tony" Eichinger
April 19, 1940 - March 16, 2012
EICHINGER – Mr. Anthony “Tony” Joseph Eichinger, 71 years of Cudworth Nursing Home, passed away on Friday, March 16, 2012 at his residence. Tony was born on April 19, 1940 on the family farm in the Cudworth district. He was the third child born in a family of 12. As many large families in that era, all the children helped out on the farm. Tony loved that role as a farmer, and continued to farm until his health failed. He ran a mixed farm, but his love was horses. He would do anything for his horses, and they responded to him. In today’s world he could be called a “horse whisper”. He gave them special attention, and would haul feed and water for miles, to make sure they had the best care and food. His barn and yard were open to his horses to feel free, to roam freely around. His horses were a lot like himself, animals with a free spirit! Tony was a man with a free spirit. Before he had health problems, he loved to travel the country side, especially the back roads. There he found peace and serenity. When Tony first started farming he could see that farmers were having a hard time dealing with problems, and he got involved. He travelled to meetings and canvassed to sign up new members, to the Farmers Union. He also helped out with “demonstrations” and “sit ins”, to get the attention of Parliament. He took his farm politics seriously. He was always willing, and if able, to help anyone in need. He always made time to help. Tony’s family was very special to him and he loved spending time with all his siblings, and their families. Tony’s quiet, caring, and generous personality, will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his eight sisters: Theresa Hessdorfer of St. Benedict, Mary Weiman of Saskatoon, Elizabeth (Chris) Molnar of Melfort, Lucy Hagan of Kelowna, BC, Rosanne (Eugene) Schemenauer of Lake Lenore, Josephine Eichinger of Lake Lenore, Lena (Dave) Pawlyshyn of Castlegar, BC and Katherine Harriman of Saskatoon; and three brothers: Lawrence Eichinger of Humboldt, Henry (Beverly) Eichinger of Cochrane, AB and Chris (Ramona) Eichinger of Dalmeny; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Tony was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Theresa Eichinger; brother-in-law Everard Hessdorfer; sister-in-law Agnes Eichinger; special cousin Joseph Chatlain, and many aunts and uncles. A Prayer Service was held on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. Others taking part in the service were: readers Mark Schemenauer and Rosanne Schemenauer and words of remembrance were shared by, Mark Schemenauer. The Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. celebrated by, Fr. Joseph Ackerman O.S.B. Others taking part in the service were: cross bearer Melissa Eichinger, readers Brendan Weiman and Katherine Harriman, intentions Ian Schemenauer, gift bearers Mary Weiman and Theresa Hessdorfer, music ministry St. Bruno Choir accompanied by organist Annie Moritz, urn bearer Andrew Eichinger and memorial table attendants Arlene Knoblauch, Kathy Weiman, Vanessa Schemenauer and Ramona Eichinger. Both services were held at St. Bruno Roman Catholic Church Bruno. Interment followed at St. Bruno R.C. Cemetery, Bruno. Memorial Donations in Tony’s memory may be directed to St. Bruno R.C. David "Kieth" McDonald
September 6, 1954 - March 9, 2012
The death of Mr. David “Kieth” McDonald, 57 years of Lanigan, occurred on Friday, March 9, 2012 at Pasqua Hospital, Regina. Kieth was born on September 6, 1954 to Fred and Irene (nee Humphrey) McDonald at Kindersley. He grew up at Coleville and attended elementary school there. Later, his family moved to Kindersely where Kieth took his high school education. Following high school, he attended SIAST in Moose Jaw, becoming a journeyman electrician. On September 2, 1978, Kieth married Kathy Klein in Kindersley. Over the next 14 years, they lived in various locations and Kieth worked at a number of different jobs. They moved to their present home in Lanigan in 1992 when Kieth obtained a job at Poundmaker. In 2001, he made a move to PCS, Lanigan Division, where he was still employed. Over the years, Kieth was active in his community as a member of the Lions club, and by serving on the executive of both the golf club and the curling club. Kieth enjoyed camping and loved to play golf. He was a sports enthusiast, watching most sports on TV and cheering on the Lanigan Pirates down at the arena. Kieth and Kathy liked to escape the Saskatchewan winters, taking many warm weather vacations over the years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and his two little granddaughters, Morgyn and Layla, held a special place in his heart. Kieth will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 33 years, Kathy McDonald of Lanigan; their two sons and two granddaughters: Ryan (Lynn) McDonald and daughter Morgyn; and Chad McDonald (Kali Bourhis) and daughter Layla, all of Regina; two brothers and one sister and their families: Warren (Carol) McDonald and family Laura and Shawn of Saskatoon; Hilda (Randy) Baraniuk of Martinsville and family Jaime (Wade) Adam and children Grace and Brynn of Fort St. John, BC and Jackie (Jason) Schell and children Payton and Keegan of Wilkie; and Lorne (Paulette) McDonald and son Matt of Chestermere, AB; and by members of the Klein family. Kieth was predeceased by his parents, Fred (2006) and Irene (1982); and two brothers, Leith (in infancy) and Blake (1986). The Funeral Service for Kieth was held on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in the Lanigan Town Hall, officiated by Fr. Paul Paproski, OSB. A private family interment followed in the Lanigan Cemetery. Memorial Donations in Kieth’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Lanigan Relay for Life or the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan. Herman Nienaber
December 7, 1937 - September 12, 2013
The family is very saddened to announce that Mr. Herman Henry Nienaber, 75 years of Humboldt, passed away at Humboldt District Hospital on Thursday, September 12, 2013. Herman was born on December 7, 1937 to Joseph and Johanna (nee Niekamp) Nienaber. He grew up on the family farm and attended Arras School and obtained a grade eight education. Herman farmed with his brother Alfred and sister-in-law Mary Ann and their family, Donna, Linda and Kevin. Raising prize livestock, he showed his Registered Yorkshire Swine and his Registered Holstein Cattle. He also served on the Saskatchewan Milk Producers Board. Besides farming, he worked at Doepkers and for his brother, Francis, doing eavestroughing and electrical work. He was one of the organizers involved in bringing underground power lines to the St. Gregor and Annaheim districts. Herman’s faith was an important part of his life. He served on the church board in Annaheim, sang in the Annaheim Male Choir in his younger years and then the St. Ann’s Choir until 2007, was a 3rd and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and was the Grand Knight of the Annaheim Council. He enjoyed a trip that he was able to take to Germany with his parents. Herman lived and took care of his mother in the late 1980’s until 2003. Throughout his life, Herman liked all sports, including bowling, golfing, hockey, curling, football, baseball, and boxing. He also enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, “doppelkopf” being his favourite. Herman was a seasoned wine maker, wine that he shared with many family and friends. For relaxation Herman enjoyed fishing. Herman was mostly known for his sense of humor, laughter and ability to tease everyone he met. He loved visiting with people and getting a good debate going about anything, and then start a little teasing. Herman will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his two brothers and five sisters: Anna (Joseph) Kiefer, Theresa (Anthony) Kiefer and Anthony (Eileen) Nienaber, all of Humboldt, Elizabeth (Arnold) Moellenbeck of Englefeld, Alfred (Mary Ann) Nienaber of Humboldt, Martha (Leonard) Nordick of Englefeld and Mary (Lawrence) Moellenbeck of Humboldt; sister-in-law, Sharon Nienaber of Humboldt; Uncle Benny and Aunt Anne Niekamp of Humboldt and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Herman was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Johanna Nienaber, and two brothers, Herman Nienaber (in childhood) and Francis Nienaber. The Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. from St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt, concelebrated by Fr. Greg Roth, Fr. Rudolph Novecosky, OSB and Fr. Daniel Muyers, OSB. Interment followed at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Annaheim. Memorial donations may be directed to Quill Plains Centennial Lodge “Activities Department” or St. Ann’s Cemetery Fund. Ken Mamer
October 12, 1930 - September 8, 2013
The death of Mr. Ken Mamer, 82 years of Humboldt and formerly of Lake Lenore, occurred on Sunday, September 8, 2013. Ken, the oldest of five children, was born at Lake Lenore on October 12, 1930 to Alois and Cecilia (nee Schemenauer) Mamer. He grew up on the family farm east of Lake Lenore, attending Solo School, completing grade 9. At this time, due to his father’s heart condition, he stayed at home to work on the farm. When not busy working on the farm, Ken would help his uncle Tony Mamer on Telephone line construction. In the winter of 1951, he worked for Sask Power on line construction and then that summer took over the line repair and telephone office for Lake Lenore Rural Telephone Co. Ken did the line work and his mother and another hired girl ran the switchboard. On October 29, 1952, Ken married Doreen Strueby and they spent their first winter together on the farm. In 1953, they moved into Lake Lenore and Doreen took over the switchboard duties from his mother. Ken took on the job of manager of the Lake Lenore Coop in 1954. In 1961, they built a new home in Lake Lenore and Ken left his job with the Telephone repair, focusing all of his time on his manager position with the Coop. Ken retired in December 1987, following a 34 year career with the Coop. He was actively involved in the community as a member of the Lions Club for 35 years, holding positions of President, Secretary, Treasurer and Director; and as councillor for the Village of Lake Lenore for 13 years. He also volunteered at the Senior Hockey games, either as a time keeper or collecting at the gate. In his leisure time, Ken like to hunt, fish, curl and golf. In 1988, they purchased a 5th wheel RV trailer and for the next 12 years spent three months each winter in the southern USA. Ken was fortunate to be able to golf on some of the most beautiful golf courses in Portugal, the Bahamas, Hawaii, five southern states and all four western provinces. In July 2000, Ken and Doreen moved to Humboldt where they built a new home. Ken became active in his new community as a part time volunteer at St. Mary’s Villa. Most recently, Ken had moved to Caleb Village in Humboldt and was enjoying having many people to visit with daily. Ken will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 60 years, Doreen Mamer of St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt; brother, Alvin (Mary Ann) Mamer of Melfort; sister, Lucille (Ed) Eberle of Little Bear Lake; sister-in-law, Elaine Mamer of Lake Lenore; and by in-laws of the Strueby family: Arnold (Millie) Strueby of Manitou Beach, Art (Mary) Strueby of North Battleford, Eunice Wourms of Kamloops, BC, Rose (Gilbert) Rabner of Humboldt, Lucille (Louie) Cecillion of Windsor, ON, Eileen (Norbert) Braun of Manitou Beach, Grace (Dave) Braun of Windsor, Rick Strueby of Watrous and Edna Strueby of Lanigan. He was predeceased by his parents, Alois and Cecilia Mamer; brother, Norbert Mamer; sister, Jeanette Mamer; parents-in-law, Fred and Theresa Strueby and by in-laws of the Strueby family: Walter Strueby, Dan Wourms, and Lorne (Joan) Strueby. The Prayer Service for Ken was held on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. and the Funeral Mass was held on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. Both services were held at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church, Lake Lenore, SK, officiated by Fr. Richard Meidl, OSB. Interment followed in St. Anthony’s Parish Cemetery. Memorial Donations in Ken’s memory may be made to St. Anthony’s Parish or the St. Mary’s Villa Foundation.
