Valerie Kerpan
April 21, 1948 - October 14, 2013
She was a beloved mother and grandmother whose personality drew you to her and made you want to include her in all your treasured moments. She inspired and encouraged everyone to be the best that they could be. She selflessly offered all of her time, energy and resources to her family and community. She lived to improve the world and enrich the lives of everyone who knew her. Valerie Lynn Kerpan (nee Smith), born in Watson, Saskatchewan, on April 21, 1948, died peacefully in her home, her family all around her, on Oct. 14, 2013, in Strathmore, Alberta. Valerie grew up in Spalding, Saskatchewan, where she attended high school, then continued her education in accounting in Prince George, B.C. In 1968, she married Ray Kerpan of Watson, and together they raised two children. Valerie worked as a tax accountant, and was involved in the Catholic Church and several volunteer organizations. Valerie loved the outdoors, enjoyed hiking and could often be found tending to her thriving flower and vegetable garden, where many birds found their home. Valerie was predeceased by her son Cameron Ryan, and by her parents Bertha and George Smith. Valerie is survived by her husband of 45 years Ray Kerpan; siblings Janet Kunz, Sandra Smith, Marlene Hudson, George (Delma) Smith, Bonnie (Greg) Rossmann, and Randy (Cathie) Smith; her daughter Shanna Gourley (Bruce) of Watson, SK; grandchildren Brooke, Pearce and Paige Gourley; and son Kyle Kerpan (Cheryl) of Calgary, AB.Prayer service was held on Friday October 18, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, October 19, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. Both services were held at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Parish Watson, SK.

Eileen LeJan
January 11, 1954 - October 14, 2013
Eileen passed away after a valiant eight year battle with multiple myeloma. She was predeceased by her first husband Emile LeJan (1992). She is survived by her husband Henry Lukan and their five children, Peter (Christine); Glenn (Jennifer); Wesley (Pam); Crystal (Albert); and Jason. She is also survived by her parents, Daniel and Anna Devlin and her siblings, Margaret, Hugh, Ev and Colette. Eileen was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba and raised in Flin Flon, Manitoba. St. Brieux, Saskatchewan became home in 1975 where she raised her family and built a career at Bourgault Industries that spanned 34 years, many of these as a member of the Purchasing team. Eileen fully embraced her role as Grandma the moment she met her first grandchild Erica in 2000 and the joy continued with grandchildren Sierra, Keaton, Brayden, Bella, Allyson, Hailey, Brett, Aliyah and Rowan. Cooking, especially baking, was an important part of Eileen’s life and one way she expressed her love to those important to her. There were many recipients of Eileen’s fabulous cooking and she relished preparing that “special dish” for family members or work colleagues. Eileen also experienced great joy over the many happy years she spent with Henry camping, golfing, snowmobiling and visiting with friends over coffee as well as her almost-daily phone calls or texts to stay in touch with her boys. Eileen’s love of life, laughter, commitment and courage were much admired and will be dearly missed by the many people she welcomed so warmly into her life. The Prayer Service was held on Thursday, October 17, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. and the Funeral Mass was offered on Friday, October 18, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. Both services were held at St. Brieux Roman Catholic Church. If friends so desire, donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the St. Brieux Midway Theatre (Box 362 St. Brieux, SK S0K 3V0). Herman Nienaber
December 7, 1937 - September 12, 2013
The family is very saddened to announce that Mr. Herman Henry Nienaber, 75 years of Humboldt, passed away at Humboldt District Hospital on Thursday, September 12, 2013. Herman was born on December 7, 1937 to Joseph and Johanna (nee Niekamp) Nienaber. He grew up on the family farm and attended Arras School and obtained a grade eight education. Herman farmed with his brother Alfred and sister-in-law Mary Ann and their family, Donna, Linda and Kevin. Raising prize livestock, he showed his Registered Yorkshire Swine and his Registered Holstein Cattle. He also served on the Saskatchewan Milk Producers Board. Besides farming, he worked at Doepkers and for his brother, Francis, doing eavestroughing and electrical work. He was one of the organizers involved in bringing underground power lines to the St. Gregor and Annaheim districts. Herman’s faith was an important part of his life. He served on the church board in Annaheim, sang in the Annaheim Male Choir in his younger years and then the St. Ann’s Choir until 2007, was a 3rd and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and was the Grand Knight of the Annaheim Council. He enjoyed a trip that he was able to take to Germany with his parents. Herman lived and took care of his mother in the late 1980’s until 2003. Throughout his life, Herman liked all sports, including bowling, golfing, hockey, curling, football, baseball, and boxing. He also enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, “doppelkopf” being his favourite. Herman was a seasoned wine maker, wine that he shared with many family and friends. For relaxation Herman enjoyed fishing. Herman was mostly known for his sense of humor, laughter and ability to tease everyone he met. He loved visiting with people and getting a good debate going about anything, and then start a little teasing. Herman will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his two brothers and five sisters: Anna (Joseph) Kiefer, Theresa (Anthony) Kiefer and Anthony (Eileen) Nienaber, all of Humboldt, Elizabeth (Arnold) Moellenbeck of Englefeld, Alfred (Mary Ann) Nienaber of Humboldt, Martha (Leonard) Nordick of Englefeld and Mary (Lawrence) Moellenbeck of Humboldt; sister-in-law, Sharon Nienaber of Humboldt; Uncle Benny and Aunt Anne Niekamp of Humboldt and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Herman was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Johanna Nienaber, and two brothers, Herman Nienaber (in childhood) and Francis Nienaber. The Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. from St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt, concelebrated by Fr. Greg Roth, Fr. Rudolph Novecosky, OSB and Fr. Daniel Muyers, OSB. Interment followed at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Annaheim. Memorial donations may be directed to Quill Plains Centennial Lodge “Activities Department” or St. Ann’s Cemetery Fund. Ken Mamer
October 12, 1930 - September 8, 2013
The death of Mr. Ken Mamer, 82 years of Humboldt and formerly of Lake Lenore, occurred on Sunday, September 8, 2013. Ken, the oldest of five children, was born at Lake Lenore on October 12, 1930 to Alois and Cecilia (nee Schemenauer) Mamer. He grew up on the family farm east of Lake Lenore, attending Solo School, completing grade 9. At this time, due to his father’s heart condition, he stayed at home to work on the farm. When not busy working on the farm, Ken would help his uncle Tony Mamer on Telephone line construction. In the winter of 1951, he worked for Sask Power on line construction and then that summer took over the line repair and telephone office for Lake Lenore Rural Telephone Co. Ken did the line work and his mother and another hired girl ran the switchboard. On October 29, 1952, Ken married Doreen Strueby and they spent their first winter together on the farm. In 1953, they moved into Lake Lenore and Doreen took over the switchboard duties from his mother. Ken took on the job of manager of the Lake Lenore Coop in 1954. In 1961, they built a new home in Lake Lenore and Ken left his job with the Telephone repair, focusing all of his time on his manager position with the Coop. Ken retired in December 1987, following a 34 year career with the Coop. He was actively involved in the community as a member of the Lions Club for 35 years, holding positions of President, Secretary, Treasurer and Director; and as councillor for the Village of Lake Lenore for 13 years. He also volunteered at the Senior Hockey games, either as a time keeper or collecting at the gate. In his leisure time, Ken like to hunt, fish, curl and golf. In 1988, they purchased a 5th wheel RV trailer and for the next 12 years spent three months each winter in the southern USA. Ken was fortunate to be able to golf on some of the most beautiful golf courses in Portugal, the Bahamas, Hawaii, five southern states and all four western provinces. In July 2000, Ken and Doreen moved to Humboldt where they built a new home. Ken became active in his new community as a part time volunteer at St. Mary’s Villa. Most recently, Ken had moved to Caleb Village in Humboldt and was enjoying having many people to visit with daily. Ken will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 60 years, Doreen Mamer of St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt; brother, Alvin (Mary Ann) Mamer of Melfort; sister, Lucille (Ed) Eberle of Little Bear Lake; sister-in-law, Elaine Mamer of Lake Lenore; and by in-laws of the Strueby family: Arnold (Millie) Strueby of Manitou Beach, Art (Mary) Strueby of North Battleford, Eunice Wourms of Kamloops, BC, Rose (Gilbert) Rabner of Humboldt, Lucille (Louie) Cecillion of Windsor, ON, Eileen (Norbert) Braun of Manitou Beach, Grace (Dave) Braun of Windsor, Rick Strueby of Watrous and Edna Strueby of Lanigan. He was predeceased by his parents, Alois and Cecilia Mamer; brother, Norbert Mamer; sister, Jeanette Mamer; parents-in-law, Fred and Theresa Strueby and by in-laws of the Strueby family: Walter Strueby, Dan Wourms, and Lorne (Joan) Strueby. The Prayer Service for Ken was held on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. and the Funeral Mass was held on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. Both services were held at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church, Lake Lenore, SK, officiated by Fr. Richard Meidl, OSB. Interment followed in St. Anthony’s Parish Cemetery. Memorial Donations in Ken’s memory may be made to St. Anthony’s Parish or the St. Mary’s Villa Foundation. Jack Failler
November 1, 1921 - August 24, 2013
Jack Failler 91 years of Parkland Lodge Lanigan passed away peacefully on Saturday August 24, 2013 at Lanigan Hospital. Jack was born on November 1, 1921 to Jacob and Magdalina (nee Goodfriend) Failler at Allen SK. He took some education at the Young School and when the family moved to the Guernsey area he continued his education at the Duffville School. Jack enjoyed the sport of curling when younger. Farming was not easy during that era and everyone had to work very hard with not a great return. But Jack was an adventurous person who loved hard work, so he continued the tradition of farming after his father passed away in 1947. Jack met Mary Bilous at a dance at Mile End School and they were married on October 19, 1949 at the Sacred Heart Greek Catholic Church in the Wolverine District. They were blessed with three sons. Jack and Mary continued their farming career for 62 years. Working with cattle brought much joy and fulfillment to Jack - that was his favorite part of the farm. Jack loved the challenge of finding a good deal and went to many auctions and enjoyed spending time bidding and visiting with people. Harvest and haying were his special times on the farm where he could spend time working with the boys. Somehow Jack enjoyed that way more than the boys did. He loved to socialize with his friends at the local coffee shop and catch up on the events around the area. There he could purchase his scratch tickets in hope of winning the “big one”. Sometimes time permitted him to enjoy a good game of pool at the local pool hall. He was not afraid to show that his favourite colour was blue – his farm was known for its blue buildings. Family was very important to him and he really enjoyed when the grandchildren started to arrive and spend time on the farm. Each of them had a nick name and so in return he was affectionately known as Jed to his family. Jack struggled with health issues in the latter part of his life and unfortunately in 2011 he had to move to the Central Parkland Lodge where the adjustment was not easy. He enjoyed visits from his family and the almost daily visits from Mary. Jack will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of almost 64 years MARY Failler of Lanigan; three sons, eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren: Doug (Adele) Failler of Humboldt and family, Shane (Christy) Failler of Martinsville and sons Josh and Jesse, Jeff (Lorna) Failler of Lanigan and daughters Brittany, Brandie and Breanna and Curtis (Kim) Failler of Lanigan and sons Chase, Gavin and Reed; Greg (Connie) Failler of Lanigan and family Dustyn (Jayline) Failler of Lanigan and son Sawyer, Sharrod Failler of Lanigan and Deon Failler (Shea) of Saskatoon; and Kerby Failler of Vernon BC and family Sarah Failler (Colin) of Kelowna, BC and Brody Failler of Vernon, BC; one sister Lena Gasser of Minnesota, USA; sisters and brothers-in-law: Evelyn Borysko of Saskatoon, Bill (Bernice) Bilous of Nipiwan, Gloria (Ron) Barton of Vankleek Hill, ON, Phillip (Clarice) Bilous of Lloyminster, SK, Orest (Sharon) Bilous of Kamloops, BC and Judy (Wally) Wenzel of Lloydminster, AB.
