Paula Sophie Jensen (nee Jaspersen)
(May 16, 1910 - December 28, 2008)
Paula Sophie Jensen passed away December 28, 2008 at the Redvers Centennial Haven, where she spent the past several years. Paula was born to Danish immigrants on May 16, 1910 on the family farm near Redvers, Saskatchewan.
Paula’s early years formed the basis for her lifelong ethic of service to others. As the oldest child in the family, Paula spent much of her youth helping at home, finishing school at grade 6. By necessity, Paula’s greatest education came from life experience. Widowed in 1945, with eight children ranging from four months to fourteen years, Paula was an indomitable rock, determined to provide her family with the education and opportunities she never had. With the assistance of Uncle Jasper Jaspersen, Hjalmer Jonnson, family and friends, Paula raised her children and managed the family farm. She inspired the family to work hard to make ends meet through very difficult times. Throughout it all, her deeply-held faith and belief in the basic goodness of all people shone through and reflected on those around her. To know Paula’s family is to know these values have been successfully passed to future generations.
Paula sold the family farm to her son Carl in 1962, to look after her parents in Manitoba. She returned to Redvers in 1965, where she lived the remainder of her life, becoming head cook at Redvers Hospital prior to her retirement in 1976. Retirement did not slow Paula. She took up quilting and completed over 100 quilts for her grandchildren’s weddings and the needy. She also became quite independent, travelling abroad on several occasions and maintaining her driver’s license well into her eighties.
Community and church were paramount, with comfort and moral and financial support freely given and received with love in the Jensen household. Paula’s social life revolved around the many special occasions of family and friends - baptisms, birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, etc. – and the closeknit Danish community around Redvers pulled out all the stops for these occasions. Paula rarely missed any of these, remembering all the extended families’ and friends’ birthdays well into her advanced years.
Paula was predeceased by her husband Soren in 1945, her parents Carl and Marta Jaspersen, her son Carl, her daughter Thelma, her brothers Nels and Harold Jaspersen, her sisters and their husbands Valborg (Chris) Neilsen and Sigrid (Ove) Damsgaard, three infant siblings, son-in-law Johan (Evelyn) Svorkdal, brother-in-law Edgar Scott, sister-in-law Dorothy (Elmer) Jasperson, grandchildren Robert (Carl and Eunice) Jensen, Kathy (Mae and Ed) Nielsen, and great-grandchild Candace (Lyle and Vickie) Nielsen.
She is survived by Carl’s wife Eunice Jensen, Thelma’s husband Ken (Peggy) Anderson, Evelyn Svorkdal, Vivian (Art) Weber, Lyla (Don) Carlsen, Lawrence (Myrna) Jensen, Mae (Ed) Nielsen, Lloyd (Judy) Jensen, 31 grandchildren, 73 great-grand children, 3 great-great grandchildren, and a host of extended family and relatives in Denmark.
A celebration of Paula’s life will be held at 2:00 P.M. 2 January, 2009 at Dannevirke Lutheran Church, Redvers. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Dustin Hall and Monica Dayman of Hall Funeral Services, Redvers (452-6020).
