Clarence was born on January 15, 1915, at Therien, AB. He was the oldest of nine children born to Harold & Mary Wales. As a young child he lived in the Kelvington District. He took his elementary education at a rural school in the Farmingdale area. Later, the family moved into a log cabin in the Kindlock District. Clarence left home in the early 30’s, to seek employment and ended up in the Lac Vert community. He worked on various farming jobs and related many a story of his time spent on the Davis farm. On June 6, 1940, Clarence married Muriel Wales of Lac Vert, SK. They resided in the Lewis Lake community until the late 1980’s when they purchased a home in Naicam, SK. Clarence remained in this home until his wife’s passing in May 2008. He then moved to Nirvana Assisted Living in Melfort, SK where he resided until August 31st, when he was hospitalized. Clarence farmed in the Lac Vert District. He continued to work for neighboring farmers, drove school bus and was employed by Cropper Motors. After his retirement, he enjoyed fishing and camping, some traveling, rodeos and woodworking. Some of his projects were making wishing wells and Purple Martin houses. Even today, family and friends get to enjoy the results of his woodworking projects. His pride and joy were the wooden wagons he made. Everyone in Nirvana had to come and see the horse and wagons on display. The highlight of his traveling was a trip to California and Arizona, where he had the opportunity to visit his aging Aunts. He also often spoke of the scenic trip he took on the Palms to Pines Highway in California. Nettie Klassen

Passed away: July 29, 2008

Peacefully, with her family at her side, Nettie Klassen (nee Nickel) passed into the presence of her Saviour on Tuesday, July 29, 2008, 10 days short of her 89th birthday. Nettie was born to Johann and Maria Nickel on Aug. 8, 1919, in Mennonite Village #3 near Saratov in Russia during the tumultuous days preceding the Russian Revolution. During her early childhood the family endured years of political turmoil, financial hardships and famine. In 1925, the opportunity came to immigrate to Canada and landed in Quebec, made their way west and eventually resided on a farm in Main Centre, SK. Here she grew up and had a normal childhood, helping with normal household duties, including herding the cattle on the road allowances. Nettie was a brilliant student in school and was able to complete Grade nine before she stayed home to help with domestic chores. Nettie recognized her need of a Saviour at an early age and accepted him personally. She subsequently was baptized and joined the church. She lived a life of obedience to Jesus which was evident in her daily walk. She loved to sing with her sisters in a ladies trio. It was at Main Centre that she met her future husband, Frank Klassen. Frank and Nettie were married in 1938. Nettie was kept busy with gardening and other outdoor chores alongside her household work. Nettie contracted TB in the spring of 1975. After a lengthy treatment she was found to be TB free. It was at this time that Frank and Nettie decided to relocate to Herbert. Unfortunately it was Frank who passed away as a result of heart complications in 1977. Nettie continued to reside in Herbert until she moved to Medicine Hat in November, 2005. It was not until December, 2007 that she was able to move into Chinook Village and into her own suite. She was taken to the hospital on the 23rd of July. Loving, gentle, caring, her family is her legacy. She will be lovingly remembered and cherished by her children: Les (Doris) Klassen, Abbotsford: Larry (Gloria) Klassen, Regina: Arlene (Pete) Braun, Medicine Hat: Glen (Wendy) Klassen, Medicine Hat; her 9 Grandchildren who were dear to her heart: Kevin, Troy, Shawn (Jennie): Gail (Stephen), Drew (Joleen): Myron (Charissa), Lyndon (Mindy): Tracy, Lori (Ken); and 13 Great-Grandchildren. She also leaves one sister, Elizabeth (Henry) Derksen; one brother, Jake (Ruth) Nickel; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank; her daughter, Gladys, in infancy: a Grandson, Gary: her parents, Johann and Maria Nickel; her brothers, John and Anton; and sisters, Mary, Annie, Kathryn and Margaret.

Kathy Dyck

Passed away: July 27, 2008

Kathy (Tena) Dyck, age 72, of Blumenort, SK, went to be with the Lord on July 27, 2008 at the Palliser Regional Care Centre. Kathy was born on the family farm near Wymark to Abe and Tiena Hildebrandt on November 23, 1935, and was the third of nine children. She attended the local school called Montford. She married Jacob I. Dyck on October 20, 1956 and they lived in Blumenort, close to where they farmed. When Jake got sick in October 1999, and could no longer take care of Kathy, she moved to the Palliser Regional Care Centre in Swift Current. As a child and young adult Kathy enjoyed running, and frequently won ribbons at track and field events with her athletic ability. Kathy had a fun loving free spirit and loved to socialize with anyone. She thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her parents and siblings at her parent’s farm. She loved and respected each member of her family. Some of her most wonderful memories involved her family singing and playing instruments in the house on her family farm. Kathy accepted the Lord as her Savior during the catechism classes that she and Jake took before they got married. She was excited about her newfound faith and stated that this gave her a desire to know more about God. Soon after marriage they became members at Blumenhof Gospel Church where she taught Wendy’s class in Sunday School. Later they became members at Christian Fellowship Church in Rhineland where they attended for 28 years. She loved Sunday because it was the day you went to church and she got to see other people in the community. She and Jake had devotions at breakfast and prayed together at breakfast and before bed. Kathy and Jake were married for 43 years. They demonstrated love and commitment to each other, sharing a common goal of raising a family and having a successful farm in a Christian household. Because of her determination to take good care of her family, she worked very hard, even when she was weak. Kathy was a good cook and showed her support for Dad by taking delicious meals to the field. After church on Sunday, she would prepare an incredible meal followed by a nap. The family table was the source of many family memories and incredible laughs. Kathy was an excellent housekeeper and enjoyed gardening and sewing. She loved to sing in the car and while she did other chores; she also loved going to concerts and listening to music. In later years when the family got together she insisted on singing together and having the grandchildren play the piano. Multiple Sclerosis changed her life. After her first symptoms at age 20, just prior to her wedding, she continued to live a fairly normal life except for the times when she was weakened by an attack. She fought MS with determination, and always had the hope that she could beat it, following any hope for a cure by trying various vitamin plans and doctors. She grasped onto many hopes for a cure. Every stage that MS introduced to her life brought with it a struggle and the challenge to reaccept it. It started with weakness, numbness, fear, and questions and continually progressed to needing support for stairs and walking, and eventually losing her ability to walk. With time she lost the ability to write legibly, drive, cook, garden, and sew. For many years her family prayed for Kathy to be healed and now after 52 years of her struggle with MS she is free and cured. Her family meant everything to her. She used to say, “Each child is so precious”. She often phoned her children, and her eyes would light up when one of them came to visit. In the last months she often inquired about her grandchildren – where they were and what they were doing. She told us many times she loved us and to tell the grandchildren that she loved them. Kathy will be missed by her family: Joanne (Steve), Janelle, Nikki, Jordan Lowen of Saskatoon, SK: Lewis (Ruth Anne), Brooklyn, Graeme Dyck of Calgary, AB: Terry (Margo), Kaitlyn, Sydney, Carly Dyck of Abbotsford, BC: Wendy ( Reiner), Connor, Joel Klassen of Calgary, AB. She is survived by her sisters, Molly (John) Koop of Swift Current, SK: Anne (Bill) Wall of Wymark, SK: Helen (Ron) Wegner of Saskatoon, SK: a brother, Henry (Caroll) Hildebrandt of Wymark, SK: sisters, Betsy (Wally) Wieser of Surrey, BC: Sally (Vic) Friesen of Airdrie, AB: sisters-in-law, Sarah Dyck of Blumenort, SK: Shirley Dyck of Neville, SK: Helen Hildebrandt of Abbotsford, BC: Roberta Dyck-Jeune of Calgary, AB: as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Jake, in 2000: her mother, Tiena, in 1994: her father, Abraham, in 1995: her brothers, Isaac in1961 and Peter in 2007. The Funeral Service was held on Friday, August 1, 2008 at 1:00 pm from the Trailview Alliance Church, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Alvin Buhler officiating. The pianist for the service was Ruth Anne Dyck. The ushers in the church were Scott Dyck, Steven Dyck, Russell Dyck and Jack Chalmers. The Honorary pallbearers were the following grandchildren, Janelle, Nikki, Jordan Lowen: Brooklyn, Graeme Dyck: Kaitlyn, Sydney, Carly Dyck: Connor, Joel Klassen. The Interment service was held at the Memory Gardens Cemetery, Swift Current, SK with the following serving as pallbearers, Brian Koop, Randy Koop, Lyonel Wall, Milton Dyck, Steve Lowen and Reiner Klassen. In memory of Kathy Dyck, donations made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada would be appreciated by the family. It is with deeply sad, yet thankful hearts that we announce the passing of Henry H. Derksen on September 24 at the age of 87, after a courageous battle with cancer. Henry was born in southern Russia, the eldest son of Henry and Anna Derksen. In 1927, when Henry was six years old, the family moved to Canada, settling on a farm near Khedive, Saskatchewan. In 1939, although the crop was poor and Henry had almost no money, he set off for Bible School in Swift Current. There he had a series of profound spiritual experiences, which re-oriented his life and set him on a lifelong journey of faith and service. During the second year of Bible School. he met Elizabeth Nickel, whom he married on October 4, 1942. The following spring, they moved to their own farm at Forward, Saskatchewan, where they farmed with Henry's family. In the fall of 1947, Henry and Elizabeth moved to Main Centre, farming there until 1984. In that year, they moved to an acreage outside of Swift Current. Nevertheless, Henry went on farming in Kyle with his son-in-law Ray until 2000. In 2001, Henry and Elizabeth moved into a condo on Lister Kaye Crescent in Swift Current, and then joined the Bentley retirement community in 2007. Throughout his life, Henry's actions were motivated by curiosity, empathy, and love -- love for a God whom he knew on the most intimate terms, for family, for church, and for neighbours. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Henry was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Agnes, Olga, and one sister in infancy; as well as by a grandson, Jason; and great-grandson, Brady. Melvin Epp

Passed away: September 10, 2008

With great sadness, yet profound thankfulness for a rich legacy of love and faith, the family of Melvin Epp announce his passing on September 10, 2008 at the age of 83 years, after a brief battle with cancer and kidney disease. Melvin Albert Epp was born near Waldheim, SK on February, 27, 1925. His parents were Heinrich M. & Aganetha (Goossen) Epp. Melvin was the youngest of nine children. Dad was well acquainted with the economic hardships of the Depression but often enjoyed herding cattle as a barefooted lad. He attended Springfield School #535 and was particularly influenced by his teacher Allan Schmidt. When he was eight years old and while attending meetings with evangelist Ed Erickson, Dad made the decision to accept Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. Six years later he was baptized and accepted into the membership of the Salem Church in the Waldheim community. He received his Bible School training at Bethany Bible Institute in Hepburn, SK, graduating in 1948. He completed his high school education by correspondence and accepted the position as a Study Supervisor at Northvale School. In 1950 he took a fancy to a childhood acquaintance and classmate, Ruby Dirks. They were soon engaged and were married on September 29th of that year. They moved to Northvale and taught there the following year. For the next two years they lived in Saskatoon where Dad studied at Teacher’s College and at the University. By 1954, Dad got a teaching position at Silver Grove School. Marlene, Melvin & Ruby’s first daughter was born that July. Dad & Mom also served as pastoral couple at the local Church of God. They next moved to Crown Hill school district near Blaine Lake, SK. It was shortly after this move in 1957, that Muriel was born. They moved to Erwood, ten miles west of Hudson Bay in the summer of 1958. Dad served as teacher-principal there for seven years, and again filled his dual role by serving as pastor for the Erwood Church of God. Donovan joined the family in 1962. In the spring of 1965, Dad was invited to teach in the Main Centre School and to serve as pastor at the Capeland EMB Church, where he was ordained. He pastored there for eleven years, and taught at Main Centre until the school’s closing in 1979. Dad became pastor of the Gouldtown Mennonite Church in 1976, and faithfully served this congregation for ten years. He finished his teaching career with three enjoyable years at the Main Centre Hutterite Colony, retiring in June of 1982. Then in 1986, Dad & Mom received the call to serve as pastoral couple at Christian Fellowship Church in Rhineland. They enjoyed serving there for another nine years before retiring from “fulltime ministry” in 1995. Dad served as President of the Fellowship of Evangelical Bible Churches from 1990 – 1997. He also served on the Board of the Swift Current Christian Counseling Centre for a number of years. He remained active in the Fairview Bible Church until this summer. He preached his last sermon there on July 27, 2008. In his retirement years Dad remained active with various other interests including: the S.C. Oratorio Choir, Men of Song, and the Caraula Group. He passed on his love of music to each of his children. He also shared with us his love of literature. As our family grew, Dad and Mom welcomed and loved each addition unconditionally. Marlene married Ellery Pullman in 1974; Muriel married David Boyes in 1977; and Donovan married Tracy Friesen in 1994. In May of 2000, Dad suffered a slight heart attack and subsequently discovered he was diabetic. With Mom’s passing to pancreatic cancer in November of 2002, he faced the greatest loss of his life. He grieved and adjusted with God’s grace and with a healthy perspective. He continued to take pride in keeping a clean house. He explored with recipes in the kitchen and made many a tasty soup and stew, along with pickles and even gooseberry moos. In February of 2007, he was diagnosed with kidney failure, and began renal dialysis three times a week in July of that year. Due to a lack of available space at the Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current, he needed to travel to Regina General Hospital for these treatments. He eventually got his Wednesday dialysis right in S.C. and was so appreciative of the staff and their care given at both hospitals. After not feeling well for several weeks, Dad was admitted to Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current with severe back pain on August 2, 2008. From there he was transferred to Regina General Hospital on August 7 where he remained until his passing. A cancerous tumor was found on his spine. Radiation treatments were given for pain management but no other recourse was available. He peacefully slipped away at 10:07 AM on Wednesday, Sept.10 with a brief smile and eyes opened to heaven.

Melvin Epp was predeceased by his parents: Heinrich in 1942 and Aganetha in 1966; wife: Ruby (nee Dirks) in 2002; brothers: Albert in infancy, Jake, Sam, and Edward; sisters: Mary Schmidt, Mattie Dirks, and Margaret Epp (on Sep.7/08!); brothers-in-law: Albert Schmidt, Alfred Dirks, and Sylvester Dirks; sisters-in-law: Alvina Epp, Mary Epp, Eliza Epp, and Selma Epp. Dad is survived by daughter: Marlene & Ellery Pullman (Caronport, SK) and their children, Jana & Derek Brawner (Winnipeg, MB), Kara & Steve Paulson (Caronport, SK) and Alissa Pullman (Caronport, SK), daughter: Muriel & David Boyes (Winkler, MB) and their children, Kelly & Sean Morgan (Stratford, ON), and Jody Boyes (Winnipeg, MB), and son: Donovan & Tracy Epp (Herbert, SK); brother: Henry (Abbotsford, BC); sisters-in-law: Sadie Epp (Steinbach, MB), Ann & Ray Luhr (Estevan, SK), and Meta Wiebe (Saskatoon, SK); brothers-in-law: Eldin & Olive Dirks (Saskatoon, SK), Irvin & Neoma Dirks (Waldheim, SK); and many nieces, nephews and good friends. We will feel this loss intensely in the coming days but we do not sorrow as those who have no hope. “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.” Psalm 116:15. Dad will remain forever in our hearts until our own day of reunion. The Funeral Service was held on Sunday, September 14, 2008 at 3:30 pm from the Bridgeway Community Church, Swift Current, SK with Pastor David Pollard officiating. The pianist was Verna Martens.
