Irwin, Yezda,
Notice dated: 01/08/2004
Regina, SK
IRWIN, YEZDA - Yezda Irwin (nee Haynee), known to her friends as 'Yi', shared her last supper with her daughter Maureen in the evening of January 5, 2004. She closed her eyes and fell asleep, passing away a few hours later, peacefully. Yezda was born in Regina on December 15, 1918 into one of Regina's first Muslim families. Her father was Muhmud Alley Haynee (Canadian name Michael), a well respected Regina merchant who lived to the grand age of 108. Yezda's mother was Rakey Gahnam (Canadian name Rebecca). Yezda was one of 18 children raised in the family home at the corner of Arcola and McAra. Her name in Arabic was 'Little Flower' and it suited her. Seventeen of the Haynee children attended Wetmore School where Yezda enjoyed her choir and loved to draw birds. In 1941, Yezda married her one true love, Harry Irwin. Harry was a well known musician and for the next 60 years, music was a major part of her life. The big band era were Yezda's glory days, with The Trianon Ballroom her favourite dance floor. Her sense of glamour and her 'Betty Davis eyes' were often noticed. Yezda found little opportunity to embrace her faith in the early days of Regina. She opted to raise her children in Eastview and the family attended Chalmer's United Church. Yezda was known as "Nanny' by her five grandchildren, whom she adored. She was always baking for her grandchildren, singing to them as babies, and she was renowned for her 'Mrs. Clean' housekeeping talents. Due to failing health, Yezda lived the last five years of her life at Elmview Extendicare on Rae Street, where she was well cared for by the staff and her precious roommate, Edith. The family appreciates their kindness. Yezda was predeceased by her husband Harry in 2000, her son-in-law Peter Hawley in 1979, and ten of her siblings. Left to mourn her death and to celebrate her life are her daughter Maureen Hawley (Rod McDonald) of Regina and their three sons, Bryan of Calgary, Maxwell of Regina, and Patrick (Lisa) of Edmonton; her daughter Colleen Crossley (Jack) and their children Justin and Kimberley, all of Brampton, Ontario. Yezda is also survived by her siblings John, Pat, Sue, Betty, Omar, Smiley, Nina and many nieces and nephews, especially her niece Lona Haynee of Regina. A Memorial Service will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue on Saturday, January 10, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. A private interment will follow. Arrangements in care of Speers Funeral Chapel and Crematorium Services.\

WHEN I'M GONE When I come to the end of my journey And I travel my last weary mile, Just forget if you can, that I ever frowned And remember only the smile. Forget unkind words I have spoken; Remember the good I have done. Forget that I ever had heartache And remember we have had our fun. Forget that I've stumbled and blundered And sometimes fell by the way. Remember that I have fought some hard battles And won, ere the close of the day, Then forget to grieve for my going, I would not have you sad for a day, But in summer just gather some flowers And remember the place where I lay, And come in the shade of the evening When the sun paints the sky in the west Stand for a few moments beside me And remember only my best Fondly remembered and sadly missed by all who knew her. No service by her request. In lieu of flowers, Florence would prefer that you just take a friend or family member out for lunch. Arrangements entrusted to First Memorial Funeral Services, Kelowna (250) 762-2299
