Jean Leighton of Chez Nous Moose Jaw passed away on Sunday January 24, 2010 at the age of 87 years. Jean grew up in the Chamberlain District. She moved to Moose Jaw were she worked at the Canadian Forces Base for the DND for over 30 years. She always enjoyed travelling and visited many places around the world. Jena also enjoyed sewing, knitting, reading and crafts of all kinds. She especially loved walking. Jean belonged to the Cosmos, Moose Jaw and District Seniors and FSNA. Jean is predeceased by her parents Joseph and Elizabeth Leighton, sister Violet Sathem and nephew Terry Bjolverud. She is survived by her brother Ross Leighton – Moose Jaw; sisters Iola Bjolverud – Moose Jaw, Reta Farr – Saskatoon; many nieces, nephews and countless friends. The Funeral Service will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., on Saturday January 30, 2010 at 11:00 am. Linda Owens will officiate. Memorialization will take place at Prairie Memorial Columbarium at a later date. For those wishing memorial donations may be directed to the Canadian Cancer Society, 61B Ross St. W., Moose Jaw, S6H 2M2 or the charity of one’s choice. EDITH GERTRUDE BELL
On Sunday July 11, 2010, Edith Gertrude "Edie" Bell (nee Jones) formerly of Riverhurst, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully with family by her side, at Chez Nous Senior Citizen Home, in Moose Jaw, at the age of 88 years. Edith was born April 22, 1922, to Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick Jones of Conquest. She received her education in Conquest and has been a Member of the United Church since 1938. She loved music all her life and was a member of both Junior and Senior Church Choirs. She sang in school activities and also did duets with her lifelong friend Geraldine Quine and also a schoolmate Duncan McMillon at local entertainments. In 1941 she went to SNS in Saskatoon and came to Riverhurst in May 1942 to teach at Pratt School. On July 6, 1943, she and Doug Bell of Riverhurst were married at her parent’s home in Conquest, Saskatchewan. In 1951 they moved into Riverhurst and started a dairy which they had for three years. Edith helped out with the farming on many aspects, from raising and caring for livestock and fowl to procuring and making preservatives for her family. Edith was an avid provider for her family to anyone that came for a visit or a meal. With raising eight daughters, there were many chores to be done and she was very successful in baking, sewing, gardening, taking time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in board games, playing cards and helping with piano lessons. Being the caring person Edith was she was called upon many times to help out at events, especially cooking turkeys for Fall Suppers. She moved to Central Butte in 2001 and then to Moose Jaw in 2002 where she resided until her death. Edith's written words to her family - "How much I loved all of them and how proud I was of all of them". Edith is predeceased by her parents Frederick and Sarah; two sisters Florence and Vivian, brother George, sister-in-law Jean, brother and sister-in-law Bob and Doris, her husband Doug of 58 years; daughter Linda; great-grandson Duncan. She will always be remembered by daughters: Jean of Moose Jaw, Mae (Gary) of Parksville, Barb (Kerry) of Moose Jaw, Marg (Cal) of Lafleche, Marion of Rocky Mountain House, Rene of Brandon and Glady of Moose Jaw; grandchildren: Annette (Rick), Kathy (Kevin), Brent (Christine), Tricia (Terry), Tammy (Shawn), Tennille, Tara (Mike), Chris (Kim), Chad (Rachelle), Dustin (fiance Sharmaine), Craig (Tiffiny), Kristan, Janelle (fiance Jamie), and Emily; great-grandchildren: Ashley, Eric, James, Luke, Kylie, Brody, Carson, Belle, Jeremy, Jasmine, Parker, Maguire, Tia, Tayla, Emily, Tanner, and Myla; nephews Billy (Lynn) and sons Darrin, Mark, Brent and their families, Jackie (Carrolyn) daughter Anne, son Keith and families of Conquest; and many other nieces and nephews. In keeping with Edith’s wishes, cremation has taken place at Prairie Memorial Crematorium in Moose Jaw. A Celebration of Edith’s life will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel on Monday, July 19, 2010 at 11:00 am, followed by a public graveside service at the Riverhurst Cemetery, conducted by Della Ferguson. A Memorial Tea will follow at the Riverhurst Community Hall which family and friends in the community are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, it is Edith’s wish to have donations made to the Sask. Heart & Stroke Foundation, 279 3rd Ave. N., Saskatoon, S7K 2H8, or to the Canadian Cancer Society, 61B Ross St. W., Moose Jaw, S6H 2M2. GEORGE WILLIAM FORSYTHE
March 17, 1927 – May 24, 2010
George Forsythe of Moose Jaw passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, May 24, 2010 after a courageous five year journey with cancer. He was predeceased by his first wife, Ila (Johnston), sister, Berta Ayerst; brothers-in-law: Alex Gordon, Gordon Johnston and Kenneth Ayerst. George is survived by his loving wife, Florence (Binner); sister, Edna Gordon; daughters: Betty (Doug) Hicks, Marilyn (Barry) Dies, and Sharon (David) Monseler; grandchildren: Carla Hicks (David Waldner), Dana (Gilles) Lajoie, Lyndon Hicks (Lisa Evans); Nathan Dies (Melanie Young), Leah Dies; Kevin Monseler, Derek Monseler, Christine (Steve) Lawson; great-grandchildren: Christopher, Matthew, Julia and Sean Lawson; and brother-in-law, Murray Johnston. He is also survived by Florence’s family: Dale (Loretta) Binner, Doug (Joanne) Binner, Kerry (Rod) Munroe, Donna Binner, Kelly Binner and their families, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and many cherished friends. A Celebration of George’s Life will be held on Thursday, May 27, 2010 at 2p.m. at Minto United Church, 1036 – 7th Avenue N.W., Moose Jaw. Reverend John Carley will officiate. Memorialization will take place at Rosedale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, In George’s memory, donations to the Moose Jaw Union Hospital Foundation or to Minto United Church will be appreciated. LORNE DOKKEN
Lorne Kenneth Dryden Dokken of Moose Jaw passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 19, 2006 after a very courageous battle with Muscular Dystrophy. Lorne was born in Edmonton, November 16, 1957, the fifth of eight children of John and June Dokken. For most of his adult life Lorne was employed as a corrections officer at the Federal Penitentiary in Edmonton, retiring from the Public Service and moving to Moose Jaw in 2001. Lorne was a family first type of man, and truly enjoyed family get-togethers – playing cards, reminiscing, enjoying a good meal in the company of his loved ones, and he was never shy about stating his “always correct” political views. Television sportscasts were a favourite pastime of Lorne and he was especially thrilled at the success the Edmonton Oilers are enjoying in the present NHL playoffs. Lorne leaves to mourn his two very precious daughters, Michelle and Amanda; brothers Glenn (Gordana) and Ward (Brenda) Dokken, sisters Dianne (Marlow) Lisell, Susan Dokken (Robin Rogowski), several nieces and nephews, and lifelong friend Larry Hack. Lorne is predeceased by his parents John (1995) and June (2004), brothers Earl David (1965), Dean (1981), and Wayne (2005). A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. With great sadness the family of Violet Marie Newton of Moose Jaw announces her sudden passing on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at the age of 88, with her family by her side. Vi was born on July 11, 1921 at Central Butte, Saskatchewan. She enrolled in the RCAFWD (Women’s Division) in 1941 as a telephone operator and was stationed at Mountain View, ON, where she met her future husband. They served together both in Halifax, NS and Gander, NL. and were married in Mawer, SK in 1943. She loved to watch the Riders, the Jays, the Leafs and curling on TV. Vi lived her life to the fullest for her family. She leaves behind her husband of 66 years – Robert “Red”, their son, Laurie (Lin) of Edmonton AB, daughter Karen and her daughter Karlea (Lucas) of Moose Jaw and the joy of her life for the last 14 months her great-grandson Jakob, son Bob (Bonnie) and their children Melissa and Rachel of Regina. She is also survived by her sister Ollie (Glenn) Moen of Moose Jaw; sister-in-law Olive (Bill) Kandia of Winnipeg; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her youngest son Randy in 1996, her parents, Olaf and Annie Larson, brother Clifford (Bessie), sisters Blanche (Orval) Tremain and Ruby (Ron) Scott. Following cremation, a family graveside will be held at Rosedale Cemetery, Della Ferguson officiating. WINNIFRED HENDERSON
Winnifred Annie Henderson, a long time resident of Pioneer Village, passed away peacefully at 100 years old, January 27, 2011. Born on January 17, 1911 in Davidson, Saskatchewan. She moved to Craik where she met Walter (Pat) Henderson. They were married in St. John Church in Saskatoon October 26, 1929. Pat passed away in 1968. Mom lived in Craik and raised three boys and four girls, then moved to Moose Jaw. Predeceased by husband “Pat” Walter, son Roy Henderson, grandson Jerrett Thomas, daughter-in-law Doris Henderson, and son-in-law Jim Botterill. She leaves to mourn her passing children: Alan Henderson, Fay Botterill, Peggy (Abe) Wiens, Laura (Jack) Duff, Willard (Trudie) Henderson, and Debbie (Mike ) Thomas; grandchildren, great, great-great, great-great-great-grandchildren. The Funeral Service will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel on Wednesday February 2, 2011 at 1:30 pm. Bishop Craig Botterill will officiate. Memorialization will take place at Prairie Memorial Columbarium at a later date. JOHN (JACK) EDMISTON
It is with great sadness to announce the passing of John (Jack) Edmiston, at the age of 73. Jack passed away peacefully with his family around him on May 11, 2010. Jack was born June 27, 1936 in York County, Ontario. He served with the Canadian Armed Forces for 25 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Mabel; son Robert (Darlene); daughters Yvonne (Dave), and Nora (Daryl); grandchildren, Amanda, John, Dustin, Sheena, Devin, Trista, Selena, and William; and special cousin Gail. A Celebration of Jack’s life will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel on Saturday May 15, 2010 at 1:30 pm. Reverend David Moore will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Moose Jaw Humane Society, Box 1658, Moose Jaw, S6H 7K7, would be greatly appreciated.
