HERBERT GRAY

Herbert Archer (Bert or Herb) Gray, age 95, passed away on November 1st, 2004. Bert was born in London, England on December 8th, 1908 and emigrated to Canada with his parents Herbert and Maud Gray in 1910. They first established themselves near the village of Briercrest for a brief time until the decision was taken to relocate into the boom town of Moose Jaw where the family spent the rest of their lives. Bert was joined by a sister Lillian on April 12, 1912 . Bert's father was a skilled newspaper proof reader renowned for his vast general knowledge as well as his excellent command of the English language with all its grammatical and compositional rules. These he demanded from editorial and production departments of the Moose Jaw Times-Herald. He was trained at the famed London Daily Express newspaper. A London physician recommended that he consider the colonies to improve his failing health. It turned out to be good advice. His career at the Moose Jaw Times-Herald began in 1911 and lasted until the day he died at the age of seventy-six. This commitment to the printing trade was not lost on son Bert. Bert (or Herb as he was called at work) became a master printer and retired at age sixty-six. At that time he had been an employee of the Moose Jaw Times-Herald for a total of fifty-seven years. This includes the six years as a newspaper carrier. He loved his craft and was proud to have been a member of the printing establishment (the preservative of all the arts) and the International Typographical Union. He regarded these colleagues as life-long friends and made a point of maintaining contact, whether locally or far away. He was an avid reader right from childhood and this, in combination with the printing trade gave him a wealth of knowledge with extraordinary vocabulary and spelling acumen. Bert was a musician; first a rhythm banjo player, then an alto saxophone player. He played in the famous Capitolians house orchestra at the Capitol Theatre (now renamed the Mae Wilson Theatre) on Main Street during the 1920s. The orchestra provided professional musical backup for vaudevillian performers. He also played with guest aggregations at Temple Gardens Dance Hall. It was here that he caught the attention of one Linda Burchill. The concentration of making a home throughout the early forties kept him away from music but as a member of the wartime army militia who were training to defend the west coast from Japanese invasion he learned the army was looking for bandsmen so he went from an infantryman to a bandsman and was issued a silver plated Selmer Eb Alto Saxophone. This began several decades for him to be back in the role of a musician. Much to his great joy, his son Barry, at age 14, joined him in the band on the Eb Clarinet. The two also played in a seven piece dance band playing the orchestrations of the swing band style. They played together in the saxophone section. The advent of the Rock bands did them in. Bert is well known for his integrity, commitment to family and friends. He was a life-long member of St. George's Anglican Church. He attended his first years of elementary school at the St. George's Mission. His sister, Lil was the first baby to be baptized at this church. Bert married his Temple Gardens sweetheart, Linda Burchill in 1934 after a six year courtship - most of which was spent with evenings at the Gardens Dance Hall. Their only child, Barry was born in 1935. The mid nineteen thirties were, for them, in most respects, the best of times but economically, the worst of times. Their house and garden was perceived by many as an oasis on the bald prairie at the furthest west end of the city. After retirement he served on the Municipal Planning Commission during its most formative years. He was treasurer for the Moose Jaw Canadian Club for almost ten years. Linda predeceased Bert in December of 1999 after three years of care at Providence Place. Bert provided daily personal care, loving attention and support to Linda for nine hundred and ninety consecutive days. This followed several years of care at home. The marriage was a model one for sixty-five years. After Linda's passing Bert remained independent and self-sufficient in his own home. He remained an approved licensed driver until he decided to let it lapse at his turning 95. Bert leaves to mourn; son Barry and his wife Nancy (Beamish); his grandson Stephen (Jo-Ann); sister-in-law Betty Turner and her family who are so very close and supportive; several cousins and their families in England will miss his regular, witty and informative letters. His sister Lillian pre-deceased Bert in July of 1999. A private family burial will be arranged. In living memory of Herb Gray, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
