Mary Broten
With heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Mary Broten on Sunday, June 7, 2009, in her 89th year. Loving mother of Archie, Mother-in-Law of Marguerite, Grandmother of Laurel (Paul Laberge), Chantel and Richel (Jason Rushforth), Great Grandmother of Christian, Danielle, Savannah, Layla, Bianca, Logan, Zachary and Ryan. Mary will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered. Mary was a life-long resident of Weyburn and retired after many years of work at the Saskatchewan Hospital. Her fun-loving and adventurous nature gained her many friends who benefitted from her hospitality throughout the years. She enjoyed travelling with her friends and Granddaughters and had a zest for life. Closer to home, she spent many wonderful summers at Carlyle Lake and loved being surrounded by the vast prairie skies. Mary is predeceased by her husband Hans Broten and her parents John Joseph Bell and Katie (MacKenzie) Bell. She was a wonderful mother, caring grandmother and great- grandmother as well as a dear friend. Funeral Services were held on Friday, June 12th at 3:00 pm from Fletcher Funeral Chapels Ltd., Weyburn with Pastor Jody Pfeifer officiating. Interment followed at Hillcrest Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Darcy McCormick, Sandy McCormick, Glenn Knupp, Doug Dreis, Joe Robillard, Ross Bobier. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate memorial donations to The T.C. Hazel Irene Glover (nee Earl)
Hazel Irene Glover (nee Earl) of Osage passed away March 14, 2009 at the Fillmore Health Centre. Born on June 16, 1911, Hazel was predeceased by her husband Frank Glover in 1973; a daughter in infancy; parents Harry and Alice Earl; and brothers Doug and Clarence. Hazel is survived by her son Ron (Madge) of Osage and their sons, Tim of Houston, TX, and Ted (Kylee) of Osage; and son Don (Barbara) of Osage, and their daughter Alison (Andrew) Shanaida of Weyburn and son Rommel of Osage; five great-grandchildren: Tori and Brody Glover, and Eric, Hunter and Nikita Shanaida; sister Marjorie Shirley of Rocanville; sister-in-law Marjorie Earl of Weyburn; and numerous neices and nephews. Hazel was born in Baltimore, Ontario. Her father Harry moved the family to the Kendal area and shortly afterward established a farm four miles north, and a half-mile east, of Osage. Here Hazel grew up with her sister and brothers, playing on the banks of the creek that ran by the farm, and attending Neal school, a one-room schoolhouse adjacent to the farm. With the smaller farms in those days, neighbors were close by, and the Earls visited with the Shoemans, Donnellys, McAllisters, and the Johnnie Johnson family. Hazel attended high school in Osage, rooming with the Mitchell family and becoming good friends with their daughter Connie. Hazel took her last year of high school in Fillmore. In 1934, she married Frank, who had come to Canada from England several years before to take up farming, acquiring land only a couple of miles north of the Earls' farm. Hazel and Frank met the challenges of the Thirties with a positive outlook and endless optimism. Son Ron was born on the farm in 1937. Frank was a natural businessman and entrepreneur, and in 1946, he rented the farm out and moved the family to Osage where they opened Glovers' Service, an automotive service station, car dealership, and farm equipment business. Son Don was born the following year. Though Frank was "the Boss", Hazel was a full partner in running the business. Customers could always count on a cheerful greeting from her as they walked in. She loved being busy selling parts, pumping gas, and doing the books. Son Ron eagerly took up farming in his early teens. His friend Jim Lynch moved in with the Glovers, working in the service station and farming with Ron. Harvest in the Fifties was an extraordinarily busy time for Hazel. With Frank delivering fuel to farmers, Hazel would run the service station from dawn to dusk, while also cooking hot meals to take to the harvesters at noon and suppertime, every day. Always cheerful and happy to be busy, her hard work and friendly manner contributed greatly to the success of the business. Don took over the service station in the early '70's, but Hazel continued to help out. Many in the community will remember her occasionally pumping gas well into her eighties. In her later years, Hazel continued to lead a very busy life, active with the local church, playing piano each week "for the old folks" in the Fillmore nursing home, gardening, and cooking a couple of meals each week for her sons' families. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, we will deeply miss our cheerful, loving "Grandma". A memorial service will take place in the Osage Community Church at 2:00 p.m. on June 20th, followed by interment in the Osage cemetery. Frederick Allen Miller
We are saddened to announce the unexpected death of Frederick Allen Miller of Red Deer, Alberta on Friday, May 22, 2009. He was born in Weyburn on July 5, 1941, and was one of eight children of John and Eva (Thomas) Miller. He is predeceased by his loving wife Kay, his parents John and Eva Miller, a sister, Audrey, brothers, Jim and Alex. Fred leaves to mourn his first wife, Bonnie Bell; his daughters, Kim (Kevin) Young of Calgary, Kacy (Aaron) Fritz of Calgary and step sons' Don of Okotoks, Gary (Teri) Smutko of Airdrie, Randy (Crystal) Smutko of Invermere; his sisters, Mary (Jim Gough), Janice (Joe Vilcu); brothers, Ron (Gloria) Miller, Stan Miller; sisters-in-law, Shirley Miller and Carol Miller, as well as 13 precious grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. All who knew Fred will remember him as a quiet, loving man who enjoyed the simple life with his family. His passion for the outdoors, eating home cooked meals, golfing, playing cards & board games, and taking after dinner naps will be remembered by all. He will be deeply missed but we will cherish the memories we have of him forever. A Funeral Mass for Fred will be held in his hometown of Weyburn, St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 10:30 AM.
Jessie Neville
On June 15th, 2009, Jessie Neville, late of Weyburn passed away at the age of 84 years. Jessie was born in Peru to Scottish parents, but was educated in Edinburgh, Scotland. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Judge Ray Neville, Weyburn and their family, daughter, Kelly (Charles) Eddy of Weyburn and their two children, Reuben and Brianna; and son, Neal (Lorelei) Neville and their two children, Tara Lee and Keala, all of Regina; also one brother, John (Mary) Watson of Lincoln, England. Jessie was trained and worked as a secretary in Edinburgh until coming to Canada in 1953 for a one year visit with friends, Andrew and Elsie Weir. She never went back, having met Ray at badminton, and they were married in 1955 and have lived in Weyburn ever since. During those years, she was active in the United Church Women, the Ladies Golf Club, Kinettes and the Prescilla Club. Over the years, she enjoyed trips to Scotland and other countries and after Ray retired, they went on cruises and vacationed in Maui. Jessie, a member of the Buchanan Clan, was a true Scott, frugal but generous, strong with firm Christian beliefs, reserved but a fond mother and grandmother, who touched many lives. We will miss our Nana. We particularly want to thank Drs. Roy, Bierman and Duffy, the special and friendly nurses at the hospital and the Home Care ladies. A Memorial Service was held Friday, June 19th, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. from Grace United Church, Weyburn with Rev. M. Barnabas officiating. Interment will be at a later date. Roberta (Locke) Rooney
On Sunday, June 14, 2009, Roberta, late of Yellow Grass passed away peacefully with her family by her side at the Deep South Personal Care Home in Pangman. Roberta, aged 94, was predeceased by her loving husband of 58 years, Ivan Rooney, parents Lewis and Vita Locke, sister and brother-in-law Bette and Allan Corbett, mother and father-in-law Annie and John Rooney, along with her brother and sisters-in-law: May and Ted Jahn, Lillian and Elwood Pollock, Gordon and Helen Rooney, Lorne and Myrtle Rooney and Vera and John Hood. She is survived by her son, Mickey (Marj, Welburn) and her grandchildren and their families: Jackie Nichol and her children Crystal, Cody and Candis; Darla (Jamie) Miskolczi and their children Devon, Paul, Caitlyn and Brett; Mike (Donna) Rooney and their children Jade, Cole and Taylor; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and especially her longtime friend Bobby Winter. She will be sadly missed by all of them. Roberta (Bobby) was born on November 17, 1914, in Rawdon Township, Hastings County, Ontario. When she was young her family moved to Creelman, SK. Her family then moved to Yellow Grass in 1927, and she finished her schooling there. She married Ivan Rooney in 1938 and they farmed the Rooney Family Farm, until 1964, when their son Mickey took over the farm, and they moved into Yellow Grass. Ivan and Bobby enjoyed playing cards, square dancing and visiting with their friends. Ivan passed away in 1995 and Bobby continued to live in Yellow Grass until 2006, when she then chose the Deep South Personal Care Home in Pangman, to spend the rest of her years. She loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. They will fondly remember the many hours playing games and visiting with her. Bobby loved to garden, knit and crochet, she has made many afghans, slippers, and lap throws. She kept very active in all current events; paying special attention to the weather and watching/listening to hockey games. She will be missed by all who knew her. Donald John Hepting
Donald John Hepting late of Weyburn passed away on June 21, 2009 at the of age 64 years. Donald was predeceased by his father, John; mother, Martha; brother, George and father and mother-in-law, Pat and Jean Bauer. He is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie Hepting, Weyburn; his children, Alison (Tim) Wotherspoon, Weyburn and their children, Ashley, Rylan, Braeya, Sean (Jaclyn) Hepting, Calgary, AB, their daughter, Maddie; one sister, Carol (George) Benko, Cupar; brother, Bruce (Grace) Hepting, Surrey BC; brothers-in-law, Arnold (Irene) Bauer, Regina; Kevin Bauer, Calgary, AB; sister-in-law, Lynn (Dennis) Koloski, Saskatchewan Beach; uncle, Norman (Elsie) Hepting, Regina; aunt, Florence Miller, Penticton, BC; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Don grew up in Cupar, and started teaching in Midale in 1967. He taught there for 17 years before moving to Weyburn where he was the principal at St. Dominic Savio for 12 years. He retired in 1996, enjoying his family and friends, and never missing his coffee times down at Carves. Prayer Service for Donald was held on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church Weyburn. Funeral Mass was held on Thursday June 25, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church with Fr. Gerry Bauche celebrant. Pallbearers were Denis Tremblay, Jerry Jordens, Garry Miller, Leo Bauer, Warren Blundell and Shane Benko. Honorary Pallbearers were all in attendance. Eleanor Regina Grondin (Schneider)

With love and fondest memories we announce the passing of Eleanor, at the age of 74, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Eleanor was born near Weyburn to Marie and Mike Schneider. She married her best friend Ken Grondin on June 2, 1956 and together had 4 children; Bruce (Bonnie) Grondin, Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Barry (Debbie) Grondin, Calgary, Alberta, Kevin (Yvonne) Grondin, Houston, Texas and Colleen (Brian) Pederson, Drumheller, Alberta; 5 grandchildren; (Bryce, Adelle, Jessica, Marissa and Billy) and 2 great grandchildren (Kyle and Cooper). She is also survived by her brother Charles (Margaret) Schneider, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents Mike and Marie Schneider and her brother Gerald. Eleanor was full of life and enjoyed it most when spending time with her family and friends. She welcomed people into her home and was a wonderful hostess making everyone feel special. Much of her time was spent volunteering, generously donating her time. We all love and will miss her. A Celebration of her Life was held at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Olds, at 12:00 noon on Monday, June 22, 2009. Robert Anton Zastrow
It is with great sadness the family of Robert Anton Zastrow announces his sudden passing on June 20, 2009. He will be dearly missed and forever remembered by: his loving wife, Gloria; his children, Barbara (Clint) of Peers, Leanna (Kirk) of Stony Plain and Robert of Spruce Grove; twelve grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his sister Myrna of Regina; brother Jeffrey (Melanie) of Kenosee Lake; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is predeceased by his parents Robbie and Alma of Trossachs; and his brother Bradley. A visitation was held for family and close friends on Friday, June 26, 2009 from 7:00 9:00 pm at Serenity Funeral Service, 128 Queen St. Spruce Grove. Eugene Edward Emberley
On the early morning of June 30th, 2009, Eugene asked his family permission to leave this world as he said he thought it was time to go. With his wife and sons in his arms, Eugene said his final good-bye. He passed away peacefully at the age of 53 after being diagnosed with cancer eights months earlier. Eugene was a tower of strength for his family and friends during his entire illness. Each and every day he taught valuable lessons to everyone that came in contact with him. Eugene was born on July 8, 1955 in Placentia, Newfoundland. After completing high school, one year of electrical training, a few months of working in northern Newfoundland, Eugene left his home in Newfoundland to become a permanent resident of Weyburn. In 1976, Eugene was scouted for the position of pitcher for the Weyburn Fastball team. During his first year in Saskatchewan, Eugene started working at CP Rail, met Charlene Hanson and they were married in July 1977. After one year the Weyburn team folded; Eugene played out of Regina with the Molsons Fastball team for the next eleven years. During these eleven years, Eugene raised two wonderful boys, met and made some long-time friends. His boys followed in their Dad's footsteps eventually playing and pitching for their own baseball teams. Eugene hung up his pitching glove in 1990 to take on the new and rewarding position as coach until 2003. Not only did he coach baseball of various ages, he was also available to help out with girls fastball whenever a team needed some help. Once coaching was over, Eugene kept himself busy with home improvements for himself and others. In his lifetime Eugene touched many lives from neighbors on our street to all across Canada. Many people in this country will be missing a very good friend. Eugene was predeceased by his father Michael, brother Tommy, sister Catherine, mother-in-law Mamie Hanson, niece Taylor Hanson and brother-in-law Gordon Ashworth. He will be sadly missed by his wife Charlene of Weyburn, his sons, Dustin (Carrie Woods) of Martensville, Landon of Weyburn (Cheryl Leyenhorst of Dalmeny), his mother Cecilia of Placentia, NL, brothers Don Emberley of Weyburn, Mike (Margie) Emberley of NL, James (Remy) Emberley of Toronto, ON, David Emberley of NL; sisters Madonna (Paul) Taruinskas of Boston, Mass, Ella (Jerry) Pitcher of NL, Monica (Ken) Walsh of NL, Bernice (Jim) Bartlett of NL, Bernadette (Gerry) Nolan of NL, Laura (Dan) McCue of NS, as well as several uncles, aunts, nieces, and nephews. Eugene is also survived by his second family, sister-in-laws Linda Hockley of Weyburn, Lorna Ashworth of Regina, Deb (Terry) Obst of Yorkton, Mona (Stuart) Bloor of Estevan, Wendy (Chris) Park of Outlook; brother-in-laws Lane (Fran) Hanson of Estevan, Emery (Jean) Hanson of Estevan and Steve (Marcy) Hanson of Lloydminster and several uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews. Funeral Mass was held at 9:30 am on Friday, July 3, 2008 at the St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church in Weyburn. Internment took place at the Columbarium in Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn, SK. Honorary Pallbearers are Bud Rosiak, Ed Goodwin, Tim Herberholz, Randy Schmidt, Kartsen Nielsen, Jim Donison, Garnet Moore and Dale Onufreychuk. These CP Rail guys were like a band of brothers rather than just co-workers. Darold Jerome Kot
On Thursday, June 25, 2009, Darold Jerome Kot of Weyburn passed away at the Regina Pasqua Hospital at the age of 71 years. Darold is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Lynn Kot and their children: Alaina (Lance) Pirlot and their children, Brittany, Marissa, Cassidy and Kate of Wauchope; Kyla (Ahab) McKenzie and their children: Kennedy, Nathan, Sienna and Matthew of Stanley Mission; Whitney (Kathryn) Kot and their children: Bryn and Yvonne of Lethbridge, AB; Garrett (Janis) Kot and their children, Mackenzie and Hayden of Regina; his sisters: Helen Schultz, Dorothy (Norbert) Schultz and Mary Ann (Ron) Abel; father-in-law, Fred Dodds; sister-in-law, Sandra (Jim) Fisher, Brothers-in-law, Kim Dodds and Paul Hudy, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Simon and Mary Kot. Mother-in-law, Ella Dodds. Granddaughter, Alexandra. Siblings: Arnold, John, Amelia, Yvonne and Pauline. Darold Jerome Kot was born January 5th, 1938 at Weyburn. He was brought up on a farm near McTaggart until the family moved to the Weyburn area when he was in grade six. Darold received his Geological engineering degree and Education degree from the University of Saskatchewan. While earning his degrees, Darold played University football which he put to good use as the football coach in Weyburn for over 30 years while teaching at the Weyburn Comprehensive High School, where he also coached both junior and senior basketball. On July 16, 1966, Darold married Lynn Dodds at St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church in Weyburn. They lived on the same family farm for 42 years, where they raised their family of four children. Darold was a reader at St. Vincent de Paul, and was a well liked, and well respected teacher. He became actively involved with cancer support in the cancer support network, Cancer Connections, and received the medal of Courage from the Canadian Cancer Society. Darold was a real family man who was completely devoted to his wife, children and grandchildren. Prayers were said Sunday, June 28, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Church. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, June 29th, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weyburn with Father Gerry Bauche Celebrant. Interment followed in Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. The Honorary Pallbearers were: Dennis Kittelson, Jim Yeaman, Dave Pulfer, Don Bell, Kelly Trithart, Vlad Bocian, Michael Bocian, Brian Goranson, Jim Parsons, Mal Barber and Ken Kot. The Active Pallbearers were: Darren Abel, Tim Schultz, Kevin Schiller, Michael Hoffman, Chris Michel and Troy Herring.
