Margaret "Peggy" Hallam
On Thursday, January 10, 2008, Margaret Sarah Catherine "Peggy" Hallam passed away at the Weyburn General Hospital at the age of 85 years. Predeceased by her mother and father, Margaret and Donald MacLeod; her first husband, Merle "Bud" Williams, and her second husband, Cliff Hallam. Peggy will be lovingly remembered by her family: son, Donald (Monica) Williams and their children, Meghan and Brianna; daughter, Lynn (Brian) Eldred and their children, Bobbi Jean (Troy) and Jay (Stephanie); daughter, Dorthy (Gillis) Hill and their children, Blaine (Jessica) and Trisha; daughter, Bev (Doug) Brown and their daughter, Janell; son, Rick (Sharon) Williams and their children, Ashtyn and Alex; son, Rob Williams; three great grandchildren: Bryden, Taytum and Kaleb; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Margaret Sarah Catherine MacLeod was born March 28, 1922 on the farm at Halladay, AB. She was raised on the farm until the family moved to Viking, AB when she was a young girl. She moved to Rocky Mountain House, AB as a young woman, where she met and married Merle "Bud" Williams in May, 1948. The lived in Calgary, AB until 1953 when they moved to New Norway, AB then Wetashirwise until 1956 when they moved to Estevan, then to Weyburn in 1962. After Bud passed away, Peggy married Cliff Hallam on March 18, 1972; they divorced January 11, 1988. Peggy has a life-long love of horses, and enjoyed gardening, especially her raspberries, as well as watching baseball, hockey, bowling, and listening to Scottish music. Playing cards was one of her special interests and she received many medals for participation in the Provincial Summer and Winter Games for cribbage and whist. She was an active member of the Legion Ladies' Auxiliary, the Canadian Mental Health Association and Wheatland Seniors Centre. Her greatest joy was having her grandchildren and great grandchildren around her. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the Weyburn General Hospital for the loving care Mom received during the last two months of her life. A Private Family Memorial Service was held Saturday, January 12, at 1:30 p.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, with Rev. John Ferrier officiating. Interment will be at a later date. All her children were considered to be honorary pallbearers. A luncheon followed at Wheatland Senior's Centre, Weyburn. Mildred Jordan
On Friday, January 11, 2008, Mildred Jordan passed away at the Regina General Hospital at the age of 80 years. Predeceased by her father and mother, George and Annie Collinge, six brothers: Jim, George, Harry, Jack, Eric and Roy; one son, Grady and one daughter, Leslie. Mildred will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Bernard of Weyburn; two sons: Craig and Kirby Jordan and one daughter, Gina (Bill) Abel; eight grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; and one sister, Annie Shuttleworth; as well as several nieces and nephews. Mildred Collinge was born July 17, 1927 at Eston. She began her hairdressing career in Saskatoon, then opened her own business in Watrous. In 1957 she moved to Weyburn, and owned and operated Jordan's Beauty Salon. Due to ill health, she retired in 2006. Prayers were said Monday, January 14 at 7:00 p.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn. The Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, January 15 at 10:30 a.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weyburn, with Father Gerry Bauche Celebrant. Interment followed at Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn. The active pallbearers were: Dave Williams, Ron Madsen, Mike Jordan, Travis Jordan, Mark Cale and Ross Johnson. Ruth Iona Vosper
Ruth Iona Vosper (nee Fair), 11 year resident of the Weyburn Special Care Home fell asleep in death on January 9, 2008 at the age of 96 years. Ruth was predeceased by her husband Frederick George (1996); parents, James Albert Fair (1964), Emma Fair (nee Goodwin 1956); brothers and sisters, Bert (1982), Roy (1977), Lily (Bell 1990), Raymond (Dooley 1982), Esther (1925), Jim (1998), George Albert (1939), twin brothers, Leslie (1924) and Earl (1925); son in law, Edwin Johnson (2002). She is survived by her daughter Verna Johnson, Weyburn; son Lorne (Anne) Vosper, Moose Jaw; daughter Evelyn (Leon) Pandachuk, Moose Jaw; daughter Norma (Norval) Leslie, Weyburn; granddaughter Lois (Roly) Melin and family, Camrose, AB; grandson Amos (Tracy) Johnson, Weyburn, grandson Calvin Vosper, Swift Current, granddaughter Valerie (Dave) Hindley and family, Calgary, AB, granddaughter Laura (Gordon) MacDonald, Regina, grandson Randy (Brenda) Pandachuk and family, High River, AB, grandson Trevor Pandachuk, Weyburn, granddaughter Wanda (Cam) MacDonald and son, Slave Lake, AB; sisters, Ethel Colvin, Belleville, ON, Dot Broten, Vernon, BC; sister in law, Vera, Courtney, BC; six great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Ruth Iona Fair was born at Khedive, on July 26, 1911. She went to school first at Black Oak School, then Kinghorn School. When Kinghorn School closed in 1919 she went to the Khedive Consolidated School. (Fred attended Kinghorn School too). She was one who loved playing basketball and excelled in the game. The Fair family moved to British Columbia around 1920, then back to Saskatchewan later in the 1920's to Coronach. Ruth married Frederick George Vosper on October 13, 1929 at Coronach. Verna, Lorne and Evelyn were born on the farm at Coronach. Vospers then moved back to the Vosper homestead at Khedive in 1939. Norma was born after the new house was built at the farm. The home at Khedive was known for the house plants that Ruth's green thumb produced, as well as the canaries she raised. Neighbors visiting were heard saying that it may be winter outside, but it was spring all year round in the Vosper house. For many years Ruth provided Woolworths in Weyburn with African Violets, Gloxinias, and canaries for sale. After the farm at Khedive was sold in 1959, Fred, Ruth and Norma moved to Ceylon. The three of them moved to Weyburn in the fall of 1964, then Fred and Ruth moved to Estevan in 1969. They moved to Kelowna, BC in 1974, then back to Weyburn in 1976 to the little house up on South Hill. After Fred's death on May 14, 1996 arrangements were made for Ruth and she walked into the Weyburn Special Care Home on December 20, 1996 where she made her little room home until her death on January 9, 2008. The Memorial Service for Ruth Iona Vosper will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Weyburn, with Mr. Arnold Kozak officiating. A family interment will be held at Khedive Cemetery. For friends so wishing, donations in memory of Ruth may be made to a Charity of Choice. Donald Kenneth Smith
On Saturday, January 12, 2008, Donald Kenneth Smith, late of Heward, passed away at the Weyburn General Hospital at the age of 54 years. Predeceased by his father, Carl Smith, grandparents, Havelock and May Smith, Simon and Lily Beitz, cousin, Jim Smith, uncles: Dan, Earl, Owen, Jerry and Grant, aunts: Madelian, Evelyn and Rita; and his nephew, Terry Allan. Don will be lovingly remembered by his mother, Ardeth (George) Hein of Weyburn; and his family: son, Lee Smith (Janet and family) of Manning, AB and daughter, Jamie Smith and her son, Lucas of Creelman; four brothers: Victor (Colleen) and their family, Michelle Bradett, Nicholas, Erick; Darcy of Edmonton, AB; Lester of Red Deer, AB; Clifford and his family, Evan and Ashtin of Fort Saskatchewan, AB; John (Brenda) of Strasburg; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Donald Kenneth Smith was born at the Fillmore Union Hospital on July 21, 1953. He lived with his family on a farm three miles NW of Heward. Don attended Heward School up to the 8th grade, and completed his schooling in Stoughton. He worked at odd jobs mostly helping farmers while he attended school. Don loved working with horses, fixing vehicles. He had a love for mechanics and passed those skills on to his son, Lee. Don and Louanne Carnegie were married march 20, 1976 in Creelman. In 1975, Don and Bernie Krieger built a shop of their own and called it Creelman Farm Service. After Don's dad, Carl passed away, Don took over the family farm. While farming, he started working for Ralph Hemphill's Trenching and later made it full time employment with his long time friend, Ralph. Don had a great admiration for his dad's involvement in WWII and was a Legion member for a number of years. He also belonged to the United Church. Don had a real love for horses and all animals in general. His main hobbies were mechanics, golfing, curling, fishing and farming. He enjoyed traveling to Mexico, socializing with friends and drinking the odd 'cool one', Don is truly Canadian eh!! He was involved with the Creelman Dinner Theatre and with judging horses at the Creelman Fair. He was always there to help and support with community events. One of the most important events in his life was the birth of his grandson, Lucas, who was truly his pride and joy. Lucas inspired grandpa to stay strong and maintain Don's determination to fight the biggest battle of his life, cancer. Don was a wonderful father and was always there for his kids. He was very proud of their accomplishments. Don passed away with real peace of mind and reassurance with his son and daughter at his side. A Graveside Service was held Wednesday, January 16 at 11:00 a.m. at Heward Cemetery, with Rev. John Lea officiating. Interment followed. The honorary pallbearers were Allan Carnegie and Ralph Hemphill. Donations may be made in memory of Don to the Canadian Cancer Society or to Weyburn General Hospital Palliative Care Unit. Bernice Mae Hoimyr
On Sunday, January 13, 2008, Bernice Mae Hoimyr passed away in the Weyburn General Hospital at the age of 83 years. Predeceased by her mother and father, Hedwig and Joseph Jacobson; brothers, John Evert, Lloyd and Kenneth Jacobson; and by her husband, Hollis Hoimyr. Bernice will be lovingly remembered by her family: son, Darwin (Pat) Hoimyr of Carlyle, and their children, Travis (Mandie) Hoimyr and their family, Gavin and Mason; Melissa and Mikynzee; daughter, Cindy Hoimyr of Medicine Hat, AB and her children: Darla (Mike) Grasley and their child, Janessa; Aaron and Ashley; son, Kenton (Melanie) Hoimyr of Regina, and their children, Kyron, Mandee and Marcee; brothers: Eugene (Jeanette) Jacobson of Beaubier; Donald (Marie) Jacobson of Regina; sisters-in-law: Mable Evert of Weyburn, and Joyce Jacobson of Medicine Hat, AB; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Bernice Mae Jacobson was born May 31, 1924 at Tribune. She grew up on the farm near Oungre, Ratcliffe and Beaubier, with her five brothers: John Evert, Lloyd, Kenneth, Eugene and Donald and her parents, Joseph and Hedwig Jacobson. She attended Draveland School, Ratcliffe School and Velhaven School, earning her grade 10. In the early 40's she worked at Eaton's in Regina, Estevan grocery store, then cooked for her brothers in 1952. On May 9, 1953, Bernice married Hollis Hoimyr at Weyburn. They moved to Alberta in 1968, then back to Radville, in 1971 and finally to Weyburn in 1977. Bernice was a beautiful sewer, and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, paper tole, liquid needlepoint and did stained glass work. She was baptized in Regina in the early 1940's and was a member of the Church of Christ. Bernice enjoyed people and visiting with her friends. She loved her family, brothers, sisters-in-law, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She treasured times when family could get together. She will be deeply missed by all. Funeral service was held Wednesday, January 16, at 1:00 p.m. from the Church of Christ, Weyburn, with Scott Wade, Minister. Interment followed in St. John's Cemetery, Beaubier. Active pallbearers were: Lyle Jacobson, Dallas Jacobson, Kyron Hoimyr, Mike Grasley, Aaron Hoimyr and Travis Hoimyr. All in attendance were considered honorary pallbearers. Grace Mildred Dechant
Grace Mildred Dechant passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at Tatagwa View Long Term Care Facility where she had resided since 2006. Grace was predeceased by her parents, Reinhold and Hilda Dechant and by four brothers: Arthur, Carl, Walter and Ernest Dechant. She leaves to mourn her passing her two brothers, Ralph and Clifford Dechant, both of Weyburn, as well as her life long friends, Rub and Wes Schultz. Grace was born in Colfax in 1930. She received her schooling at Diamond School in Colfax. Grace left school at an early age when her mother became ill and she cared for her six brothers. She loved gardening, growing vegetables and flowers. Grace also loved to travel and went on trips with her friend, Pauline Knox and others. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Francis as well as a member of the Royal Purple in Weyburn. In the early 1980's, Grace and her brothers bought a house in Weyburn on Scott Street. When Grace became ill, they moved to an apartment at Waverly Place. Soon after, Grace retired to Parkway Lodge. As her health continued to deteriorate, she moved to Tatagwa View Long Term Care Centre. Grace was a very pleasant person who also had a most pleasant smile. She didn't complain and appreciated everything that was done for her. Grace will be missed by all those who knew her and especially her brothers, Ralph and Clifford. A Memorial Service was held Saturday, January 12 at 10:00 a.m. from Zion Lutheran Church, Weyburn, with Marjorie McLeod CLA officiating. Interment followed in Regina Memorial Gardens, Regina. Donations may be made in memory of Grace to the Canadian Cancer Society, the United Way or to the Royal Purple, Weyburn Branch. Sarah Edna "Sadie" Maguire
On Friday, December 21, 2007, Sarah Edna "Sadie" Maguire passed away one month short of her 103rd birthday. Born at Killarney, Manitoba, January 25, 1905, she was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Elizabeth Freeman; four brothers, Tom, Bill, Ben and Russ and three sisters, Fanny, May and Olive. Sadie will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Marion Lewis of Daytona Beach, Florida and son, Wayne (Joan) Maguire of Regina; five grandchildren: Blair, Maureen and Shawn Turner, Jeffrey and Lesley Maguire and four great grandchildren: Carley, Natalie, Brenna and Sarah Turner of Bentenville, Arkansas. Sadie was raised on the family farm, graduated from Teacher's College in 1921 and taught school in western Saskatchewan for five years. In 1927 she married Art Maguire and they lived in the Village of Osage, Tyvan and Francis. They raised two children, Marion and Wayne. Sadie was a member of numerous clubs and associations in Francis; as a member of the Eastern Star, she held the positions of 'Worthy Matron, District Grand Matron and Grand Officer of Saskatchewan". She was very active in the operation of the family business and was the Francis News reporter for the Weyburn Review and the Leader Post. Sadie was a member of he Francis United Church where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and was Treasurer. They retired to Weyburn in 1983, and Art passed away in 1991. Sadie moved to the Weyburn Special Care Home in 2005. The family would like to thank the Weyburn Special Care Home for their excellent care over the past three years. Funeral service was held Saturday, January 19, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, with Rev. Barnabas officiating. Interment followed in Tyvan Cemetery. All those present were considered to be honorary pallbearers. The active pallbearers were: Blair Turner, Shawn Turner, Jeff Maguire and Shane Pearce. Kenneth John Johnston
On Wednesday, January 16, 2008, Kenneth John Johnston passed away at the Weyburn General Hospital at the age of 95 years. Kenneth was predeceased by his wife, Olive Johnston, an infant daughter, Irene Johnston, his parents, Herbert and Carrie Johnston, brothers, Norman, Walter and Carmen Johnston, and a sister, Joy Kempthorne. Ken will be lovingly remembered by his son, Neil and three daughters: Kay, Jean and Judy; seven grandchildren: Max, Kyle, Candace, Christopher, Debra, Merle Lyn and Larry; great grandchildren: Shannon, Charmaine, Maria, Michael; great great granddaughter, Parris; one sister, Dorothy Allen; two brothers: Calvin (Joan) and Aleck (Eileen) Johnston; sisters-in-law, Mary and Jean Johnston; special niece, Janet (Neil) Orsted, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Ken was born April 17, 1912 in the Brenda Municipality, Manitoba. Ken served in Italy and England during WWII. He farmed in the Goodwater area from 1947 until retiring in 1997, when he and Olive moved into Weyburn. Ken was a resident at Weyburn Special Care Home at the time of his passing. Funeral service was held Monday, January 21, at 2:00 p.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, with Rev. John Ferrier officiating. Gerald Alexander sang a solo accompanied by Helen Flaaten. Interment followed in Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn. The pallbearers were: Albert Ernst, John Tosczak, Desmond McKenzie, Kim Oxelgren, Lyonel Wanner and Garry Mokelki. Don Kunard
With great sadness, his loving family said good-bye to Don Kunard who lost his battle with cancer on Sunday, January 20, 2008. Donald Edwin Kunard was predeceased by his parents, John and Ethel Kunard; one sister, Willa Brown; one brother, John Kunard; nephew, Tracey Kunard; brothers-in-law, George Williams and Royce Brown. Don will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 59 years, Fern Kunard (nee Powell) of Weyburn, and their daughter, Christine (Derrick) Tincher of Calgary, AB, three grandsons: Morgan Kunard (Kim Alexander) of Vancouver, BC, Jeffrey (Jenie) Tincher of Calgary, AB, Brendan Tincher (Krista Dawson) of Calgary, AB; and great grandson, Dawson Tincher, the joy of his life; a brother, Garry (Lila) Kunard of Saskatoon; a sister, Joyce Williams of Saskatoon; sister-in-law, Gwen Kunard of Prince Albert; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, relatives and friends. Don was born at Coderre, grew up at Bridgeford, later being employed at Medicine Hat, AB, Griffin, and finally with Nexans in Weyburn, where he retired after 36 years of service. Don passed away at the Weyburn General Hospital on January 20. He will be sadly missed by all he knew and loved. By request of the family, a Memorial Service will be held from Fletcher Funeral Chapel at a later date. It will be announced at the time. Interment to follow in Griffin Cemetery. Brian Douglas Johnston
Brian Douglas Johnston, late of Moose Jaw, formerly of Weyburn and White Bear Resort, passed away on Friday, January 18, 2008 at the age of 59 years. In Brian's early years he attended Grand Coulee School growing up on a farm in the Grand Coulee area. Brian then attended the U. of S. School of Agriculture ending his formal education with a diploma in agriculture. Brian moved to Weyburn in 1970 with his wife Brenda and eventually started with Canada Post. Brian was a member of the Grace United Church, Weyburn Legion, Weyburn Golf Club, member of United Church Men's Choir and helped with numerous church functions. He got enormous enjoyment out of watching his two children Jeff and Stacey grow throughout the years. Brian organized the Weyburn CUPW and was president for around 12 years. He enjoyed hunting and in his spare time played accordion, organ and guitar. Brian enjoyed his 33 year career with Canada Post and retired in 2002 to White Bear Lake Resort. Brian will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 37 years, Brenda Johnston; children, Jeff (Faith and her family), Stacey (Chad and his family); parents, Art and Hazel Johnston; sister, Joanne (Jim) Franks, their children, Melissa and Darren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Bonnie McGillivray, Janie (Stan) Metcalfe and family, Penny Gremonprez and family, Doug McGillivray and family, Les Minto and family. There are also many friends Brian made through his life that will miss his humour and insight into life. Brian believed strongly in making someone smile or laugh each day no matter how his day was going. Brian's service was held on Wednesday, January 23, at 2:00 p.m. from the Grace United Church, Weyburn, with Rev Barnabas officiating. Interment took place in Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn. The active pallbearers were Stan Metcalfe, Chad Weppler, Jim Franks, Darwin Hoimyr, Al Calladine and Wayne Danyluck. All who shared in Brian's life are considered Honorary Pallbearers.
