COX - Thomas Wearn. After a lengthy struggle with cancer, at Langley, B.C. on Monday, April 9, 2001, aged 75 years. Wearn was born in Vancouver, on May 15, 1925. He is survived by his sons, Tom and Steven and his wife Rhonda. He leaves his grandchildren, Briana and Braedon; his sister Betty Douglas; his first wife Lillian McKay and second wife Margaret Cox. Wearn will be sadly missed by his niece Janice Doyle and nephew Earl Douglas, as well as his many dear friends. Wearn proudly served his country with the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII, seeing action during the Battle of the Atlantic. He was a longtime member of Branch #21, Royal Canadian Legion in Langley. TOY BANK CO-FOUNDER WILLIAM F. (BILL) CONROY CONROY - William F. (Bill). Born in Edmonton, Alberta on October 18, 1914. Passed away peacefully April 8, 2001 in the Royal Columbian Hospital, New Westminster, B.C. He is predeceased by his first wife Mary, sisters Patricia Desonier, Hawaii, and Marion Wilson, Ottawa, and brother Allan Conroy, MD California. Bill is survived by Rita his loving wife of 33 years, his brother David (Harry) Conroy, Edmonton, his sister Gertrude and brother-in-law Ralph Engel, Hawaii. Many other relatives including Richard (Dick) Irwin, West Vancouver and Helen Campbell, Edmonton. He is also survived by his loving children Keith, Patrick, David, Jim, Sharon, Linda, John, Gordon and Bruce and his 11 grandchildren, and foster daughters Gail Kinne and Jill Hurst Styles. Bill was a veteran of World War II, a member of the Knights of Columbus in Edmonton, Mayor of St. Paul, Alberta and a past member of the board of directors YMCA Vancouver. He was invested with the Confederation of Canada Medal, 1992, a General Motors Dealer of many years in St. Paul, Alberta and West Vancouver. Friends and associates are invited to a celebration of his life, Monday, April 16, 2001, 12 noon at St. Peters Church, 402-Royal Ave, New Westminster, B.C. METHVEN - Adam. Born 1923 Broxburn, Scotland. Passed away suddenly on April 2, 2001. Survived by son Mark (wife Lorraine); daughter Jennifer (hus-band Dean); grandchildren Zack, Jake and Jessica McLean. Adam was a former Royal Merchant Navy Vet, and enjoyed his many years at sea. Later retiring from the shipbuilding industry in North Vancouver. Adam was placed to rest next to his wife Jeanette at North Vancouver Cemetery. The graveside service will be held Thursday, April 12, 2001 at 2:00 p.m.
SEPEHRI - Kiu. Born December 20, 1936. Passed away peacefully April 9, 2001. Survived by loving wife Vera and son Bijan; brothers Esfandiar, Teymour (Manijeh); sisters Matine (Reza) and Shahla; as well as other members of Sepehri and Muller families. SIM - Margaret "Mugs". Passed away suddenly April 12, 2001. Predeceased by her loving husband Dave. She is survived and sadly missed by her son Garry (Carole); daughter Leslie (Ron); grandchildren Mackenzie, Amber and Andrew; sisters Eileen (Buster), Dorothy (Bill); as well as many relatives and friends whose lives she touched with generosity and caring. Born on Salt Spring Island, moving early to Lynn Valley, where she raised her family and served the community for so long, then living her later years in the City of North Van. Margaret maintained close ties with her family and friends, both old and new. "Mom" passed on quietly at Lions Gate Hospital with dignity in the company of her two "kids" whom she loved so well. SCOTT - R.W. (Dick). Born October 5, 1916. Passed away peacefully at home April 11, 2001. Predeceased by wives Phyllis (nee Pound) and Isabel (nee Montgomary). Survived by daughter Heather (Peter) Scholefield, grandson Scott (Heather), granddaughter Melina (Mike), sister Chrissie McLeod. Dick was born in Portage La Praire, Manitoba and moved to British Columbia in 1927. He spent all his working life in the forest and lumber industries. He was a member of the Terminal City Club, Royal Vancouver Yacht Club and a life-member of the International Fraternal Association of Lumbermen. He became its first Canadian International President in 1959. Dick was recognized by the Canadian Wood Promotion Council for his "outstanding contribution to the promotion and development of the Wood Industries of Canada." No service by request. ANDREWS - Captain Harold Reginald James. Born April 14, 1917, mercifully released April 5, 2001 after a valiant battle for life against cancer. Predeceased by his father Harold (WWI), mother Primrose (1986), brother John (Jack) (WWII). Survived by his sisters May Kinninmont, West Vancouver and Phyllis (Glenna) Hall, Torremolinos, Spain, nieces, nephews and friends. Born in Transcona, Manitoba, Harold moved to Vancouver with his mother and siblings in 1927. He ran away to sea at 15 for a life of adventure and by 21 had earned his captain's papers to navigate British Columbia's treacherous coastal waters. During the 30's, 40's, and 50's he was employed by various B.C. tugboat companies as a Senior Master to tow barges north as far as Alaska, south to California. He was known for his exceptional knowledge of the local coast and often commended for exemplary discharge of his assignments, including extracurricular crises such as delivering babies. During the war Harold served in the Air Force and in the Merchant Navy. In the '60's after studying to be a Ship's Pilot he worked for the B.C. Pilotage Authority and B.C. Ferries. Then he turned to higher seas, plying his cargo farther afield transporting barges through the Panama Canal to the Caribbean, Newfoundland, St. Lawrence Seaway and North Sea oil rigs. He also trained many seamen to follow in his footsteps. Away from the roll of the sea, Harold was a solitary individual, usually kind-hearted, cheerful, an engaging storyteller with a good sense of humour and a twinkle never far from his eyes. Unequivocally, he was his own man to the end. Special appreciation to North Shore Continuing Care, the compassinate staff on 7W Palliative Care at Lions Gate Hospital and friend Glen Pedersen for his steadfast devotion during the final months of his illness. Harold's request was that his body be cremated and there be no service or memorial. He asked that his ashes be scattered at sea. Jesus, Saviour, pilot me over life's tempestuous sea; Unknown waves before me roll, Hiding rock and treacherous shoal; Chart and compass come from Thee, Jesus, Saviour, pilot me. When at last I near the shore, And the fearful breakers roar 'Twixt me and the peaceful rest, -- Then, while leaning on Thy breast, May I hear Thee say to me, 'Fear not, I will pilot thee.' TROJANOWSKI - Dorothy. Born in Chorley, England on November 15, 1925. Passed away peacefully in Vancouver on Sunday, April 8, 2001. Predeceased by her husband Stefan. Survived by her daughter, Helen Martell; grandchildren, Karen and Troy; her many friends, as well as family in England. GRIBLIN-Frank Carl, in his 89th year, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at Inglewood Care Centre in West Vancouver. Predeceased by his wife Alma, sisters Marj (Davidson) &Emma (Wakeford), Frank is survived by his son Barry (Heather) &daughter Donna (John Bates), grandchildren Kyle &Eve (Paul Clark) and great grandson Kieran. TAYLOR - Gerald Frances Wilson. Born May 1, 1912 Vermilion, Alberta, passed away peacefully in Palliative Care at Lions Gate Hospital on April 11, 2001. Predeceased in June 1988 by his wife, Ina, Gerry is survived by his daughter, Leslie (Bob), and son, Alex (Anna); granddaughters Holly (Paul) and Irene (Grant); grandsons Andrew, Patrick and Nathan; sister, Betty. He also leaves behind his very special friend and companion, Evelyn Lewis. He had various jobs, working in mills, owning Hillcrest Donuts and a trucking company. He was the first non-Masonic father in DeMolay, a member of the Gaelic Society, The Mr. And Mrs. Club and the "Pistol Club". He loved the Canucks, hosting dinner parties and driving friends to social events. He enjoyed many evenings cooking a roast or a salmon over the campfire. PAYNE - Mr. Colin (Sonny) Tyson of Vancouver. Beloved son of Al and Phoebe Payne of Richmond, died suddenly on Thursday, January 2, 2001 as the result of a plane crash in Venezuela. Funeral arrangements to be announced when completed.
HOLM - Oliver Sigurd. Died at the age of 79 at his home in North Vancouver on January 24, 2001. Survived by Edna, his devoted wife for 52 years, daughter Signe, son-in-law Peter and numerous other relatives in B.C., Manitoba, Sweden and Norway. Mourned by a host of friends and admirers wherever good people gather. A modest man. Oliver described himself as a "farm boy from Chatfield, Manitoba, who just happened to have a bit of luck in life". But it wasn't luck that took him through World War II service with Squadron 410 of the RCAF in England and Europe from 1941-45. Moving to Vancouver in 1947, he used his honesty and indomitable drive to become an esteemed home- builder. He was also a Past Grandmaster of Centennial, King George Masonic Lodge and an active and respected member of the Canadian Legion. In addition to being a loving family man and public benefactor, Oliver was a passionate sportsman. He was a fan of baseball and ice hockey and a player and teacher of golf. Honest endeavor was the only quality you needed to earn his approval. Oliver's life will be celebrated by friends on Saturday, March 17, 2001 at Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Rd, North Vancouver, 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donation to the Arthritis Society.
GOOD - Bill. Passed away peacefully at Chilliwack General Hospital on Friday, January 26, 2001. He will be deeply missed by Gerry, his loving wife of 46 years, his children Rick, Susan, Tammy, Mathew and their families and his sister Estelle. Bill was a long time resident of North Vancouver and a proud member of the Kitslano Boys Band, he went on to be a percussionist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra for 40 years. He was loved by all who new him. His life will be celebrated by his family and many friends at a memorial service to be held at the Promontory Lake Estates Club House 6001 Promontory Road, Chilliwack on Saturday, February 3, 2001, 2:00 pm. GILL - Michael A. (Mike). Passed away suddenly at Lions Gate Hospital on June 7, 2001. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 40 years, Rose; children Lorraine (Marc) and Michele; grandchildren Layla and Kali; siblings Ronald (Cecilia), Pat (Yoni), Peter (Aicha), Dorothy (Howard), Jeannie (Gary) and Gerry (Marg); as well as many nieces and nephews. Mike was born May 10, 1937 in Hong Kong. He was educated at La Salle College, was an active member of the Royal Hong Kong Volunteer Navy Corp, worked for the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank and immigrated to Canada on October 2, 1960. Mike was a sales representative and an entrepreneur. He was also actively involved as a volunteer in Politics, Community Services and his Church. Prayers will be offered on Thursday, June 14, 2001 at 7:30 p.m. and Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 15, 2001 at 11:00 a.m., both at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, 1369 East 24th St, North Vancouver, Fr.
