Elvira Penner (nee Friesen), 85, of Maryfield, Saskatchewan formerly of Steinbach, MB passed away at the Sunshine Villa Nursing Home in Maryfield, SK on Saturday, December 3, 2011.
She is survived by one daughter, two sons and their families.
She was predeceased by her husband Dr. Archie Penner.
The funeral service will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach on Saturday December 10 at 11:00 a.m. with viewing prior to the service. Interment to follow at the Prairie Rose Evangelical Mennonite Church Cemetery, Landmark.

Anna Doerksen (nee Cornelsen), 91 of Blumenort, MB passed away at the Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach on Saturday, December 3, 2011.
She is survived by two daughters, two sons, two sisters and their families.
She was predeceased by her husband Peter P. Doerksen and one daughter.

Margaret Rose Wiens, 62, of Grunthal, MB passed away Thursday, December 1, 2011 at the Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach.
She is survived by her husband George, one daughter, two sons and their families; three sisters, two brothers and their families.

John K. Reimer, 87, of Grunthal passed away at the Menno Home for the Aged in Grunthal on Thursday, December 1, 2011.
He is survived by his wife Margaret (nee Martens), five daughters, two sons and their families.

ERDMAN H. KEHLER
Thursday, March 13, 2003 at the Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach, Man., Erdman H. Kehler passed away at the age of 79 years.
He is survived by his wife Jean, daughter Angelinda, and her children: Michael (Laura) Dueck and their three daughters, Michelle, Amy and Kaylee; Corey (Candice) Dueck and their children, Colton and Brittney; and Holly (Greg) Reimer; son Albert (Elfriede). He is also survived by three brothers: Abe (Mary), John (Agatha), Harry (Norma); as well as three sisters: Nettie Kehler, Mary Fast and Helen (Harvey) White; and many relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents: Martin and Lena Kehler; brother Peter; sister Kathy; a son in infancy; and a great-grandson, Austin Dueck, also in infancy.
Our parents, Erdman and Jean, were married Oct. 23, 1947 near Bothwell, Man. In their earlier years they farmed in the Bothwell and Ste. Anne areas, and to supplement the farm income, Dad went to work at Supercrete in Winnipeg for about 20 years, and later worked at a few other jobs. Our parents moved to Mitchell, Man. in 1966 and remained there till 2001, when they made their last move to Woodhaven Manor in Steinbach, Man.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 16, 2003, 2 p.m., at the Chortitzer Mennonite Church in Mitchell, with Pastor Richard Martens officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Friends paid their last respects Saturday, March 15, 7-8 p.m., at Loewen Funeral Chapel, (devotional at 8 p.m.) and at the church prior to the service.
Should friends so desire, donations may be made in his memory to the Mitchell CMC Church Fund.

KATARINA DUECK
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Katarina Dueck, age 90.
Katarina was born Nov. 10, 1912 to Martin and Katarina Broesky in the district of Hanover Municipality. At the age of two, her family moved to a homestead west of Glen Kerr, Sask. She grew up in the Glen Kerr area and was baptized in the Sommerfeld Mennonite Church.
July 19, 1931, she married Henry Janzen, a widower with a two-year-old son, Leonard. Henry passed away in March, 1932. November 25, 1934, she married Jakob Dueck, a widower with a six-year-old son, John. Together they had five children. After their marriage, Jakob worked for different farmers in the Glen Kerr and Calderbank areas until he started working for the CNR. They moved to Lake Valley, Sask. and later to Central Butte, Sask.
Jakob passed away in 1968, and in 1970 Katarina moved to Herbert, Sask., where she resided in her own home until March 10, 2003, when she fell and fractured her hip.
She was a very giving person. Her family was very dear to her and she prayed for all of us. She enjoyed cooking, baking, crocheting and loved working outside in her yard and garden. Her house was always surrounded by flowers in the summertime. Katarina loved to visit with anyone who had time to listen, especially children.
Katarina went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Friday, March 14, 2003. She leaves to mourn, son Leonard (Elsie) Janzen, daughter-in-law Justina Dueck; three daughters, Dora Knelsen, Darline (Lloyd) Reis, Diane (Joe) Dueck; 24 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren, 27 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Martens and Margaret Gerbrandt; and stepsister Judith Klassen.
She was predeceased by her parents, first husband Henry Janzen, second husband Jakob Dueck, daughter Lenora Dueck, son Alvin Dueck, stepson John Dueck, son-in-law Gordon Knelsen, grandson David Dueck, numerous sisters, brothers and many other relatives and friends. She will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by everyone who loved her.
Funeral services were held at the Herbert Mennonite Church, Wednesday, March 19, 2003, 1 p.m. Pastor Donovan Epp officiated, with interment at Stone Hill Cemetery near Glen Kerr. Memorials for the Herbert Hospital, Herbert, SK, S0H 2A0 would be appreciated. In living memory of Katarina, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley, Moose Jaw, Sask., by Prairie Memorial Funeral Home. Prairie Memorial Funeral Home, Chaplin in care of arrangements.
MARY N. CHORNOPYSKI
Thursday, March 13, 2003 at the Vita Personal Care Home, Mary Chornopyski passed away peacefully at the age of 87 years.
She is survived by four children: Edward (Cecelia) of Winnipeg, Man., Wilmer (Gail) of Gardenton, Man., Verna (Earl) Falk of Vita, Man., Doris (Ron) Pidlubny of Winnipeg; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters: Violet, Lilly, and Sophie; and four brothers: Alexander, Peter, Nickolas, John; and other relatives and friends.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, John and Anastasia Jaman; husband Nick in 1986; sister Kay; and brother Bill.
Prayers were said Monday, March 17, 7:30 p.m., at Loewen Funeral Chapel. Funeral service was held March 18, 2003 at 10:30 a.m., with Very Rev. Fr. Miron Pozniak officiating. Interment followed at the St Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery in Arbakka, Man.

HILDA BLANCHARD
She was always the one who said when it was time to go. This time it was all too fast. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of a loving wife, mom and grandma.
Hilda Eleanor Blanchard passed away suddenly March 15, 2003 at the Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach, Man., at the age of 76. Hilda leaves behind a proud man who loved her dearly, her husband of 53 years, Rollie; her children: David (Janet), Debbie (Rod Palson), Lori (Doug Walker); and her greatest passion of all, her grandchildren: Jeff and Lindsey Palson, Mark and Carla Blanchard, Jesse and Kody Walker life for them will never be the same without their playful and caring grandma.
Her sisters were her pillars of strength; she leaves only one to mourn her passing, Mil Misener, as well as special sister-in-law Polly Fairbairn. She was predeceased by her parents, David and Isabelle Fairbairn; brothers: John (Pro), David (Punk), Alexander (Sandy) and Tom; sisters: Marjorie, Elizabeth (Toots) and Molly Carey; sisters-in-law: Lillian and Verna; and brother-in-law: Len Carey.
Mom was a great fan of the great outdoors and a great fan of sports especially curling and baseball and everyone she knew was a fan of hers! Her priority was always "you first", particularly when it came to family. She could never do enough for others. For those who had the pleasure of sitting at her kitchen table, her baking and cooking was a drawing card. And when it came to drawing cards, there were few who could match her style at that same kitchen table.
She had a strict order of rules for the household, counter-balanced only by a warm and genuine sense of humor. She loved to crochet afghans and to knit but most of all, she loved to call Rollie's bluff when he was trying to spin a yarn. She stamped her trademark on every Manitoba town that we called home, and she will be overwhelmingly missed by an extended family that is vast.
She was a friend of her children's friends and her grandchildren's friends. Her granddaughters could confide in her and her grandsons were proud to stand by her. She was a friend of the roaring game of curling and was steadfast with those who shared that passion with her. She was a friend of nature and of dogs with men's names. And for the past several years, her and Rollie's best friends have been the game of golf and moonlit bonfires at their quaint little cabin in Geysir.
Fittingly, her last activity in life was to watch a game of curling at the local rink. She was counting the moments until the first rock would be thrown at the World Championships in April. Be assured friends, the seat won't be empty.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Hilda Eleanor Blanchard was held Tuesday, March 18, 2003 at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, where her cherished friends and fellow curlers were honorary pallbearers.
A final farewell service will be held for the closest of friends and family at Pipestone, Man., Thursday, March 20, 2 p.m., at the Pipestone Community Hall. She will be laid to rest with the proud clan of Fairbairn in the Pipestone Cemetery.

ELNORA BORKOWSKY
Mom's too short life on earth with us ended suddenly and tragically Saturday, March 15, 2003. She was born Jan. 26, 1930 in the Steinbach, Man. area to Adolf and Julianna Stemrich. Norie left the area to work in Winnipeg, Man., but returned to the area and caught the eye of our dad, Adolph. The two were married in Friedensfeld Oct. 11, 1952. Most of their life was spent farming in the Bristol area. Their longing for country living continued after Earl took over the family farm. They built a new home in 1987 and Mom continued to live in this home until her untimely passing.
Although we as her children felt she should move to Steinbach, perhaps an apartment, she asked us how could she, she needed a garden. We knew how important this was to her and therefore we knew the garden wasn't so much to fill her freezer every fall, it was to keep the freezers of her children stocked with vegetables throughout the winter. Her pantry shelves were always bulging and we can't count how often Earl or Murray had to reinforce the shelves.
She not only taught her children how to plant a garden, she took great pleasure in teaching her grandchildren the "right" way to place the seeds in the soil each spring. When we felt Mom's garden was too big, Earl carefully tilled a smaller patch for her. Not to be outsmarted, Mom only planted the rows a little closer together and found spaces around her yard that had good soil to grow vegetables.
Springtime always brought a call from Mom, "Have you planted your garden yet?" And if the answer was no you could rest assured that she would arrive shortly with her box full of seeds, and rubber boots.
A fishing trip brought great pleasure to Mom. It didn't matter if the trip was up to Northern Manitoba, the Whiteshell, or Ontario, Mom was always ready to go. Last fall, when Earl, Ryan and Mom went fishing, we're not sure who came home with the better fish story. When we would suggest to Mom to take a trip somewhere she would always reply that going fishing was much more appealing than any other holiday.
Although Mom and Dad were thrilled to see their children married, their joy of their grandchildren's births was unquestionable. And how lucky could they be to have three grandsons and three granddaughters. Who better to spoil than their grandchildren. Taryn, Denae, and Chantel had their own special times, learning the fine arts of making perogies and noodles. And this past Sunday when Denae asked, "Who will make the noodle soup now?" we too wondered who knows that recipe best.
If Stephen, Barrett, or Ryan wanted to know the score in hockey, baseball, or football games, Grandma piped up with the answer.
Grandma was always ready to attend hockey, baseball, basketball, and volleyball gamesband, Christmas, and spring concerts, and piano recitals. Her fridge door was always full of newspaper clippings with pictures of her grandchildren's accomplishments.
Grandma was known to us as the magic mender. If it needed to be fixed, whether it be hockey socks, winter gloves, cushions, or holes in the knees of pants, she always had her needles and thread ready to go to work. It was only last Sunday that she darned Taryn's hockey sockswho of us would ever know to stick a water bottle into the sock while mending it.
Often she'd say, "What will people think? I'm never home. I'm always going somewhere." Grandma, it doesn't matter what people thought, your grandchildren were proud to have you there.
Summers always included building sandcastles at St. Malo or Grand Beach and she even attempted the water slides this past year. She felt this was one thing she would not need to do again, because she had slipped under the water and lost her glasses.
Evenings would find Mom listening to Moose games in the winter, Goldeyes games in the summer, and Bomber games in the fall. Her love of the game of solitaire was evident and we actually showed her how to play this game on the computer, but she thought the old-fashioned way with a deck of cards worked much better. She even taught some of the grandchildren how to play the old-fashioned way. Playing dominoes at family birthdays was something we all enjoyed to do as well. We never left her home hungry or without a care package of some kind.
We will miss our Mom, but are happy to know that she and Dad are reunited. We will miss her worthy presence, but know that Mom and Dad, Grandma and Grandpa will be at all those special events together. Grandma will no longer have to shiver and get cold during a hockey game, or sit in the sweltering heat of a baseball game.
There was never a time when Grandma wouldn't try a "new" dish, be it pizza, chicken fajitas, fettuccini alfredo, or caesar salad. Although it wasn't something she grew up with, she would try the grandkid's favorite foods.
If we can find any comfort in our loss, it is that Mom and Dad are together again. No matter how hard we tried to keep her busy and involved in our lives, we know the void in her life after Dad's passing was greater than we had thought. Mom we want you to know that you will be greatly missed and in our hearts you will never be gone. You will always be our bright star in the sky, looking down and watching over us.
Norie Borkowsky (nee Stemrich) was born Jan. 26, 1930, and entered her heavenly home on March 15, 2003. After fifty plus years of marriage she was predeceased by her husband Adolph on Dec. 24, 2002. Being the last member of her family, she was predeceased by all her sisters and brothers. They include Reinhold Krentz, Ida Thompson, William Krentz, Edward Krentz, Emil Krentz, Gottlieb Krentz, Lily Wiebe, and Adolf Stemrich.
She leaves her memory to live on in the lives of her children: Marilyn (Ralph) Rott, Carol Borkowsky, Murray (Joy) Borkowsky, and Earl (Gisele) Borkowsky. Her most precious grandchildren: Taryn, Barrett, and Denae Rott, and Stephen, Chantel, and Ryan Borkowsky will cherish the many fond memories they have of their Grandma.
We, her family, wish to thank the following people: La Broquerie Fire Department, Steinbach Fire Department, Steinbach EMS, Vita EMS, Steinbach RCMP, Vita Hospital staff, passersby and all others who attended at the scene.
