In hospital, surrounded by her family, on Friday, March 10, 2006, in her 60th year. Beloved wife of Michael. Loving mother of Sean (Heidi) and Tanya (Ronald). Adored grandmother of Sydney and Samuel. Dear sister of Kerry (Janet) and Catherine (Robert), and sister-in-law of Mary Ann (the late Robin). Friends may visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue at Richmond Road on Sunday, March 12th from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Monday, March 13th at 11:30am. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre would be appreciated.

E. Patricia Torkos (nee Morris)

passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2006 at 12:40am at the age of 75 after an exhausting battle. So loved by her children Linda Springstead (George) and the late James Jr. (Sonya). Cherished by her grandchildren Kayla and Alec. Will be sadly missed by Brittany and Jessica, Gizella and James Torkos, Helen and Paul Macsuga, Rita Morris, Jean Cobden, her many nieces and nephews and all of her friends. Memorial Service will be held at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue at Richmond Road on Wednesday, March 1 at 4pm. In memoriam donations to the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation appreciated for the extraordinary care of the staff.

Ethel May Tunney (nee Elvidge)

On February 27, 2006, a remarkable woman passed on when Ethel May Tunney began her new journey. Ethel, twice widowed at an early age (by Weldon Black and James Tunney), raised 4 wonderful children; Barbara (Al), Bud (Iris), Rodney and Deborah-Anne (Andy). She is fondly remembered by her boundless optimism and love for life, which will live on in her grandchildren; James, Wendy (Sasha), Jennifer (George), Ashley and Matthew (Rebekah) and great-grandchildren Tiana, Emma and Abigail. Ethel's love for her family was absolute and is returned in full for all time. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street on Thursday, March 2, 2006 from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Friday, March 3 at 11:30am. Interment to follow at Beechwood cemetery. Loving mother of Mary Newton (the late Rev. John - 2005) of Seeley's Bay, ON; Gerry Merkel (Carl) of Ottawa and Major Patricia McInnes (Major Greg) of Ajax. Grandmother of Karen Vogelzang (Rob) of Seeley's Bay; David and Brian Merkel, both of Ottawa and Melanie McInnes and Tyler (T.J.) McInnes, both of Ajax. Survived by her sister Jo Vryenhoek of Holland. Predeceased by her sister Co de Man and brothers Emiel, Cor and Sjaak. Missed by sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. Friends may visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue at Richmond Road on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm and on Thursday after 12noon at the Salvation Army, Woodroffe Community Church, 820 Woodroffe Avenue. Peacefully at Stonehaven Manor on Sunday, March 5, 2006 at the age of 90. Beloved husband for 64 years of the late Eleanor (nee Phelan), who predeceased him by just 6 days. Devoted father of Judith, John (Isabel), Jane, Jim (Fran), Stephen (Linda), Susan (Philip Hogarth) and Elizabeth (Danny O'Connor). Proud grandfather of 11 and great-grandfather of two. Predeceased by one sister, Dorothy Brown. Bert was born and raised in Ottawa and graduated from Lisgar Collegiate. He enlisted in the army in 1939, served overseas in World War II, was a United Nations Peacekeeper in 1958 and retired in 1965. A longtime employee of the Public Service Commission of Canada, Bert was of the generation of men who believed in duty, country and hard work. Eleanor was born and raised in Ottawa and was educated at Notre Dame Convant and graduated in 1935 from the University of Toronto and was a life long member of St. Theresa's Parish. She was a remarkable woman, known for her keen intelligence, sharp sense of humour and devotion to family. Thelma passed away peacefully in hospital on April 3rd, 2006.Thelma loved to travel, paint, do crosswords and cherished time spent with family and close friends. Her family remember her best for her Irish sense of humour and wish to thank all of her and our friends that made her laugh and enjoy life. James Cranston - 04/01/2006

Jim died peacefully in hospital on 31 March, 2006 following a brief illness. He is now reunited with his beloved wife Nonnie (Lorna), but will be forever missed by his brother Charles (Jen) of Ottawa and his adored nieces Lynne Sabatino (Rick, and children Erica and Michael) of Orleans and Shona Jackson (Neil, and children Cailan and Liam) of Cochrane, Alberta. Born in Hamilton, Scotland, Jim served with the RAF in WWII and emigrated with Nonnie (an ex-WAAF) to Canada in 1956. He enjoyed his career as a structural draftsman with a number of Ottawa engineering firms before retiring from the Department of Public Works in 1985. A life-long Dixieland Jazz aficionado, an avid golfer and loyal football fan, he and Lorna also became dedicated members of and tireless workers for the William Barker Bailey, V.C., 410 Wing of the Air Force Association of Canada. Jim's ready wit and fun-loving nature complimented Lorna's generous heart and together they made lasting friendships which continued even after Lorna's passing in 2004. He will be especially missed by his neighbours the Pauls, Tubmans and McGoverns and by his long-time 'breakfast buddy', Lloyd Wilcox. Following a private cremation, a Memorial Service to honour Jim's life will be held at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street on Thursday, April 6, 2006 at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.

Colette Deslauriers (née Breton) - 03/30/2006

After many years of battling illness and pain, Colette passed away at the age of 78. Wife of the late Henri Deslauriers. Dear mother of Jacqueline and Denise (Jean-Pierre Racine). Loving grandmother to Marc and Luc Rolland; Rosiane, Gilbert and Marielle Racine. Survived by her brother Ray Breton (Jean Simser) and sister-in-law Sister Jacqueline Deslauriers s.c.o. Predeceased by her parents Charles Breton and Juliette Lavigne. Family and friends may visit at the St. Laurent Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 1200 Ogilvie Road at Aviation Parkway on Saturday, April 1st, 2006 from 11am until service in the Chapel at 2pm. A special "thank-you" to all the nursing and medical staff of the 5NW Wing at the Ottawa Hospital General Campus for the wonderful care given to our mother.
