- Shop now for incredible insights into your wellbeing -SWIFT - Joyce Ailene Swift (nee Sinclair), beloved wife of Jim Swift of Calgary, passed away at her home on Monday, October 20, 1997. Joyce was born and raised in London, Ontario; a place to which she always had a special attachment. As a young woman, she ventured west to Calgary, seeking knowledge and adventure. She was very proud of her work ethic over the many years of employment in Calgary with London Life, Amoco, Mobil, The Oil and Gas Conservation Board, and the University of Calgary. Joyce's passion was literature and we are all assured that she is now reading and learning with the philosophers and writers of the ages. Left to cherish the memories of her are her husband Jim, son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Pam, grandson Griffin, all of Calgary; and aunt Helen Sinclair of Stratford, Ontario. SWITZER - Hendrica Luise Switzer passed on peacefully with great courage in the evening of November 16, 1997 at the Rockyview Hospital at the age of 73. She was predeceased by her loving husband Bill Switzer in 1986. Hendrica will be so sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her son Gerard de Boo; her daughter Elsje (Terry) Crossie; her grandchildren, Markus, Desiree, Brandy-Jade, Natalie and Gregory. Hendrica was loving and gentle with a smile for everyone, even in her last days on earth. She was also a strong woman, who handled life's ups and downs with class and courage. She was active and enjoyed the company of her many good friends. She loved to travel and did so frequently and with great joy. She is now resting peacefully in the arms of our Lord, our Shepherd. SYER - Charles Bruce Syer of Oakville, Ontario, passed away June 5, 1997 at age 55. He is survived by his wife Jacqueline; and daughters, Katherine of Victoria, B.C., and Marcia of Etobicoke, ON; a sister Joan McFarlane (Larry) of Calgary; and his father "Chuck" Syer of Calgary, Aunt Shirley Feltham of Winnipeg; and cousins, and nieces and nephews. SZOTYLO - Ellen Szotylo of Calgary, formerly of Edmonton, passed away at the Brentwood Nursing Home on September 15, 1997 at the age of 91 years. Ellen was born October 1, 1905 in the Ukraine and immigrated to Canada in 1907. Ellen is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Eleanor and William Chmilar of Calgary; and her son Herbert McNeill of Thompson, Manitoba; six grandchildren, David, Shawna, Barbara, Lorraine, Beverly, Melody; and eleven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Elsie of Edmonton; two sisters, Myrtle Wilson, and Rose Neilson; her brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Vera Pritula, all of St. Catharines, Ontario; as well as other family members. Ellen was predeceased by her first husband William McNeill, her second husband Julian Szotylo, and sons, Gordon and Ronald McNeill. Funeral Services will be held at Christ Church (12166 - 102 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta), on Saturday, September 20, 1997 at 4:30 p.m. with the Rev. John Privett officiating. HARDY - Susan Helen Hardy, beloved wife of Harold "Ray" Hardy of Strathmore, passed away on July 10, 1997 aged 61 years. Besides her husband, she leaves to mourn three sons, Walter (Norma), Joedy, and Shane (Lisa); her stepdaughter Sylvia (Paul); seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Julius, Frank and Johnny; two sisters, Ann and Lena; and several nieces and nephews. Susan was also a mother to many others. She was predeceased by her parents and an infant daughter Sue Ann. Susan was a very loving wife and mother and grandmother. Her passing leaves a huge void in each of their lives. Funeral Service Monday, July 14, 1997 at Strathmore Alliance Church at 1:00 p.m. Interment Drumheller Cemetery. HARRISON - Douglas Mark Harrison passed away in a motor vehicle accident near Lake Louise, Alberta on December 27, 1997, at the age of 36 years. Born and raised in Calgary, Doug graduated from Central Memorial High School and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering at the University of Calgary in 1983. He worked at Shell Canada Limited for eleven years. Doug was an avid sportsman and loved his family dearly. He will be sadly missed by his wife Arlene; his children, Sam, Christine and Jennifer; his parents, Lorin and Donna Harrison, Frieda Hunter (Ron), Richard Hunter (Ruth); brother Gary (Debbie); sister Linda Brown (Jim), and Elton Hunter (Debbie), Dr. Allen Hunter (Susan) and Gwen Hansen (Kevin). ZABIELLO - Veronika passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital on October 17, 1997, at the age of 76 years. She is survived by her brother Walter (Mary) Lapaj and their daughter Anna Teresa of Calgary. ZACHARIASSEN - Hans T. Zachariassen, passed away quietly at the Hanna Hospital on June 28, 1997 at the age of 79. After spending time in the Hanna and Rockyview Hospitals, Hans chose to return home to Hanna to be among family and friends. "Poppa" was the loving father of two daughters, Susan and Amber of Calgary, and a model father because of his hard work, strong principles and responsibilities. Hans will be remembered and missed by his sister Ruth Colbert of Hanna; brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Phyllis Zachariassen of Rosebud; and brother-in-law Harry Price of Red Deer. Hans was a favourite uncle and story teller to Sandra (Mike) Lawrence, Rod Colbert, Neill Colbert; and the Zachariassen family of Donna, Roy (Laurie), Richard (Helen), Judy and Linda. He was predeceased by his parents, sister Christine, and brother-in-law Mac. Hans was born on March 2, 1918 at home in Scotfield, Alberta, a second child to Norwegian immigrants Eric and Ingeborg Zachariassen. He was raised in the Stanmore/Youngstown area. Before joining the army in 1942, Hans worked as a carpenter with his father. During his military service in England, Belgium and France, Hans served with the tank and reconnaissance divisions. He returned home in 1945 to run the family farm. After retiring from farming and ranching in 1980, Hans spent his time with friends golfing, fishing, curling, travelling, over coffee, seniors slow pitch and winters in warmer climates. He also visited Norway and hosted many Norwegian relatives over the years. Hans expressed to his family, his appreciation for the care and support he received from the staff at the Hanna Hospital. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, July 4 at 2:00 p.m. at All Saints Anglican Church, 107 - 6 Avenue West in Hanna. Interment will follow at Hanna Cemetery. A Luncheon will follow at the Legion Hall in Hanna. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Hanna Hospital or Stars Air Ambulance (7/2/1997).
