- Shop now for incredible insights into your wellbeing -SUROWSKI - Mr. Joseph Surowski of Calgary, passed away at the Peter Lougheed Centre on November 16, 1997 at the age of 95 years. Joseph retired in 1970 from C.P.R. as a boiler maker. He was born July 4, 1902 and came to Canada in 1928 as one of the first Polish pioneers. He was one of the founding members of the Polish Canadian Club and the Polish Church in Calgary. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Muriel Surowski of Vernon, B.C., Edward and Pat Surowski of Calgary; a daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Freddy Boc, also of Calgary; eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister in Poland, Aniela. He was predeceased by his first wife Josephine and his second wife Josephine, and three brothers, Apoliniary, Stefan and Frank. Relatives and friends and invited to Prayers at Our Lady Queen of Peace Polish Catholic Church (2111 Uxbridge Drive N.W.) today, November 18, 1997 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady Queen of Peace Polish Catholic Church (2111 Uxbridge Drive N.W.) on Wednesday, November 19, 1997 at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. SUTTON - Phyllis Grace Sutton of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 20, 1997 at the age of 81 years. She is survived by two children, Robert Ernest and Rachel Anne. SVENDSEN - Margaret Jane Svendsen sadly passed away at her home on the 20th of July, 1997 at the age of 64 years. Jane is survived by her loving husband Eric; her three children, Eric Jr., Jennifer, and Dana; and her three grandchildren, Katie, Joshua, and Leanne. Jane is also survived by her brother Billy Mantor of Rhode Island. Jane was born in New Brunswick in 1933, the first child of Dr. George Burton and his wife Mildred. She graduated from nursing school in 1954. She married Eric Svendsen in 1958. An Alberta resident since 1977, Jane will be missed by many loving friends and all her family members. A Memorial Service will be held at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church at 8007 Bowness Road N.W. on Thursday, July 24, 1997 at 2:00 p.m. She was loved dearly (7/23/1997).
SWABY - Mr. Kenneth Marshall, late of Calgary, AB and formerly of Prince Albert, passed away peacefully on November 30, 1997 at Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert. Kenneth was born on September 21, 1936 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. He grew up in the Prince Albert area, attending various schools and eventually started working for Canada Safeway. Kenneth moved with his family to Calgary in 1973 and began his employment with the Calgary Co-op where he continued to work until his retirement in 1993. He spent his last years doing what he enjoyed most - raising animals. Kenneth will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Ken is survived by his sons, Kevin (Santina) of Calgary and Sean (Rachelle) of Surrey, BC; his grandchildren, Jennifer, Jaclyn, and Eric of Calgary; his mother Viola Swaby of Prince Albert; his sister and brothers, Helen (Rance) Moline of Prince Albert, Earl (Sharen) of Meadow Lake, and Ray (Carol) of Saskatoon; as well as numerous other family and friends. He was predeceased by his father Ray in 1942. The Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, December 4, 1997 at 1:00p.m. in Gray's Funeral Chapel, Prince Albert with Pastor Lee Updike officiating. A private interment will take place. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations may be made to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (S.P.C.A.) or the Canadian Liver Foundation in memory of Kenneth. SWAN - Mr. Russell Swan (Russ), beloved husband of Gretta, passed away on September 5, 1997 at the Extendicare Cedars Villa Nursing Home. Russ was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and at an early age moved with his family to Loyalist, Alberta. He later relocated to Wainwright before moving to Calgary in the mid 1950's. He operated three service stations in Calgary; a Texaco in Bowness, a Royalite and Phillips, both in Inglewood. Russ is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Fred and his wife Delorah, and their children, Tanis and Travis. He is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Jane Swan of Vermilion, Alberta; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. SWANN-SACKVILLE - Margaret P. Swann-Sackville (nee Brown) passed away at Peter Lougheed Hospital on Friday, December 12, 1997 at the age of 85. She was born in Innisfail, AB on April 4, 1912 and settled in Calgary in 1929. Margaret worked at Sears until her retirement and established herself as the first commissioned saleswoman in major appliances for the company and became the top sales person in Canada. She was Worthy Matron of Edith Cavell Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star and recently received her 50 year pin. She was Past Guardian of Bethel 12, and past Grand Guardian of the International Order of Job's Daughters. Margaret was predeceased by her husband George Swann in 1970 and more recently, husband Nelson Sackville in 1981. She is survived by her son Jack Swann (Diane) and grandchildren, Rick, Lori, Glenn, Lisa and Jay; daughter Dorothy Casady and granddaughter Margaret; daughter Frances Anderson (Rob) and grandsons, Scott and Michael; daughter Lynn Davies (Norm) and grandchildren, Philip and Allyson; daughter-in-law Lyn (wife of Ferris Swann, deceased) and grandchildren, Bruce, Muriel and Graham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson's Society of Alberta. SWIANIEWICZ - Dr. Stanislaw, LL.B., Dr. Jur. In his 98th year, on May 22, 1997, at Oak House, Chislehurst, Kent, England. Predeceased by his wife Olimpia and a great-grandson Krzysztof. Survived by his four children, Maria Nagiec (Czeslaw), Poland, Witold Swianiewicz (Maria), Pender Island, Jerzy Swianiewicz (Jolanta), Poland, Bernadeta Szeglowski (Zdzislaw), Poland; as well as twelve grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Dr Swianiewicz was born in Daugavpils, Latvia, in 1899. He had a very eventful life. Fought for the defence of his country, Poland, in two wars. In the Polish Soviet war of 1919-1920 and in 1939 against the combined invasion of Germans and Soviets. Was taken P.O.W. by Russians and barely escaped the fate of his fellow officers who were massacred by the Soviets in the forest of Katyn in 1940. He was released from the Soviet Gulag in April, 1942, on the basis of the Soviet-Polish agreement of 1941. Dr. Swianiewicz was primarily a scholar. He held various teaching and research positions in Poland; in England, London and Manchester; in Indonesia under the auspices of UNESCO; in Canada and U.S. He published widely. In Economics he devoted much attention to the problems of underdeveloped countries. He judged his book, "Forced Labour And Economic Development", his most important work. In 1977, his book, "In The Shadow Of Katyn", an account of the massacre of four thousand, three hundred Polish officers by Russians in 1940, was voted the most outstanding book published outside Poland by the Polish Association of Writers Abroad. Dr. Swianiewicz, Professor Emeritus in Economics at Saint Mary's University, Halifax, received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Saint Mary's at its Convocation in 1982. A Funeral Mass was said at Oak House, Chislehurst, England, on June 10, 1997. Cremation took place in England and Stanislaw was buried beside his wife Olimpia in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on June 14, 1997. To commemorate Dr. Swianiewicz and the Victims of the Katyn Massacre a Mass will be held at the Church of SIOSTR WIZYTEK at 5:00 p.m. on July 10 in Warsaw, Poland (7/4/1997).
