APPLEYARD - On June 8, 1997, Dana Michael Appleyard of Sherwood Park, passed away suddenly at the age of 18 years. He is survived by his loving parents, Doug and Beth; sister Jacqueline; two brothers, Tyler and Sheldon; grandparents, George and Irene Appleyard, and Ralph and Mary Main; also numerous aunts and uncles, and other relatives and many friends. Funeral Services were held June 12, 1997 at the Sherwood Park United Church. In lieu of other tributes, contributions may be made to the Ardrossan High School Art Department, 53129 Range Road 222, Ardrossan, Alberta T8E 2M8 (6/18/1997).

ARCHER - Anthony Gordon (senior engineer with Petro Canada, Alberta), passed away suddenly on Thursday, November 27, 1997, in Calgary, Alberta, Tony Archer, formerly of Newfoundland, aged 40 years. Predeceased by his parents, Gordon and Delia. Leaving to mourn, his wife Marietta (nee Hawco); beloved daughter Lori Anne; sister Mary Elizabeth; aunts, Elizabeth Walsh, St. John's, Caroline Pickett, Sackville, N.S., Florence Blackwell, Ontario, Maura Martin, St. John's; uncles, Raymond Archer and Bernard Archer, both of Halifax; other relatives and friends. Resting at CARNELL'S FUNERAL HOME, 329 Freshwater Road on Monday and Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral Mass to take place on Wednesday, December 3, 1997 at 9:45 a.m. from St. Pius X Parish with Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre. Donations in his memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation (12/3/1997).

ARKELL - Rose Arkell of the Central Park Lodge passed away on November 25, 1997 at the age of 86 years. Rose is survived by her brother Terry Soldan of Vegreville, Alberta; sisters, Marie Wasa, Edmonton, Phyllis Yanchyshyn, Salmon Arm, B.C., Nettie Petaske, Kelowna, B.C., Olga (Nick) Kostyniuk, Edmonton and Evangeline Kitz, Kelowna; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Tom in 1981, her parents Dmytro and Catherine Soldan, five brothers and three sisters. Funeral Services will be held at Leyden's "Chapel of Remembrance " (17 Avenue and 2 Street S.W.) on Saturday, November 29, 1997 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Queen's Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Central Park Lodge 1813 - 9 Street S.W., Calgary T2T 3C2. As a tribute to Rose, LEYDEN'S FUNERAL HOME will make a donation to Central Park Lodge. ARKES - Ronald G. Arkes, of the Millarville district, passed away surrounded by his family at the Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary on Sunday, June 29, 1997 at the age of 71 years. Ron was born September 18, 1925 in De Bilt, Utrecht, Holland. After being raised on a farm, he joined the Armed Forces and spent six years in Indonesia. Ron came to Canada in 1952 and began working for the PFRA, then the Lazy FT in Hussar, AB as a herdsman; and later, managing the Model Dairies Jersey Farm. Ron's interests in farming broadened, enticing him to rent three quarter sections to farm but he found it too lonely, so he became a truck driver of Midland Superior and Melchin Transport. On the highway, near Airdrie, AB is where he met his wife-to-be, whose father had a flat tire. After living south of Red Deer Lake Store, they moved to Conrich but his love for the country brought them back to Millarville in 1966. Ron spent the next thirty-one years playing an active role in the Square Butte Community. As well as ranching and being a Game Warden, Ron became interested in the student transportation business. He helped set up the Bus Drivers Association, became a School Trustee, was instrumental in a manual for Safety Oriented School Bus Drivers Training as well as many other community and business related endeavors. Ron retired from the Foothills School Division in 1997, after twenty-seven years of service. Ron always said, "I have no regrets and I have had a good life!" We will always love you Granddad. Ron will be deeply missed by is loving wife, Jeannette of thirty-seven years; daughter Wendy and granddaughter Staci Arkes; his son and daughter-in-law Bernie and Sue, and their children, Doug, Don, Scott, Ben and Brent Arkes; his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Mike and their children, Kinnie, Tristan, Skylar-Ty Willis, all of Millarville, AB; and his son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Ann, and their children, David, Randy, Sarah and RJ (Ron) Arkes, all of Black Diamond, AB. He was predeceased by his parents, Ben and Else, and two brothers, John Otto and Hansa. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S "Fish Creek Chapel", (14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary), on Thursday, July 3, 1997 at 1:00 p.m. In living memory of Ron Arkes, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, "Fish Creek Chapel", 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E., CALGARY, AB T2X 3J3. (7/2/1997).

ARMSTRONG - Jack James of Calgary and Hussar passed away suddenly on June, 1997 at the age of 74 years, doing what he loved to do, riding his horse Tony and helping out at the farm. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife and friend, Muriel; and family, Judy and Lorne Currie of Hussar, Jacqueline and Thomas Dickson-Armstrong of Calgary, Jim Armstrong and Judi Trelenberg (children, Matt and David) of Edmonton, and Wendy and Doug Newton of Crossfield; five grandchildren, Stacy (Jason) Evans, Jody (Shawn) Evans, Laura Currie, Cassandra Newton, Tyler Newton; great-grandson Tristen Evans; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Rose, father Clarence and step-mother Ellen. He was a very active, dedicated member and leader of many fraternal organizations including, Al Azhar Temple (Past Potentate 1994), an active riding member of the Al Azhar Mounted Patrol (thirty-five years), Hussar Masonic Lodge No. 130 (fifty-four years), Harmony Chapter No. 25 (life member), Cyprus Preceptory No. 33 (life member), 32 Degree Scottish Rite Valley Calgary, Rose Croix Calgary and Hussar Chapter No. 92, Order of the Eastern Star (currently serving his ninth term as Worthy Patron). A loving family man, a rancher, a farmer, a fraternal man, a man who loved to serve, to see progress, to make things happen by leadership, a man who will be sadly missed. Funeral Services will be held at FOSTER'S FUNERAL HOMES "Garden Chapel", 3220 - 4 Street N.W. on Thursday, June 12, 1997 at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Shriner's Hospitals for Children, c/o Al Azhar Temple, Box 70038, Bowness Postal Outlet, Calgary, AB. T3B 5K3. At Foster's Funeral Homes "Garden Chapel's" annual Christmas Candlelight Memorial Service, an "Ornamental Dove" will be dedicated in memory of Jack. ASCHACHER - Mary Emilia Aschacher (nee Brunetto), beloved wife of the late Peter Aschacher of Blairmore, a former resident of the Beaver Dam Lodge, Calgary, Alberta, passed away at the Crowsnest Pass Long Term Care Centre on June 22, 1997 at the age of 94 years. Prayers will be held in St. Anne's Catholic Church in Blairmore on Wednesday, June 25, 1997 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held in St. Anne's Catholic Church in Blairmore on Thursday, June 26, 1997 at 10:30 a.m. with Father Jack Pereira, Celebrant. Interment to follow in the family plot St. Anne's Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations will be gratefully accepted for the charity of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to FANTIN'S FUNERAL CHAPEL. (6/24/1997).

FRANKLIN - Mr. John Henry Franklin, December 27, 1925 to December 28, 1997. It is with sadness that Kevin and Lorne Franklin announce the sudden passing of their father John. John was predeceased by his wife Ruth in 1994. He will be greatly missed by Kevin and Laurel, Lorneand Shelley; his two grandchildren, Jamie and Tawnya; and his sister Bernice. John was one of the nicest persons you could ever hope to meet. Born in Calgary, he grew up during the Depression, served aboard Corvetts in the North Atlantic in World War II, became a respected Geologist who helped open up oil fields across Western Canada in the 1950's, changed careers to become a superior teacher who loved and was loved by his "kids", and most recently was passionately involved in politics. He was a great dad, husband, brother, grandfather and friend. At John's request their will be no Funeral Services. In lieu of flowers, a donation to your favorite school would be most appreciated (12/31/1997).

FRASER - Hazel (nee Hawkes) died suddenly, aged 79, in New Glasgow, N.S. She was born of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Hawkes in Calgary. She leaves to grieve, her daughter Rosemary Pacquette (Glen), and grandchildren, Jeff and Nicole at 269 Mitchell St., New Glasgow, N.S., B2H 1G6. Hazel was predeceased by her husband Stuart in October 1989 and her brother Paul on October 8, 1997. She is survived by brothers, Murray (Marg) and Doug (Dorothy); several cousins, nieces and nephews. She worked in Calgary for The Calgary Herald, and Imperial Oil Refinery before moving east to Toronto and eventually New Glasgow, where she will be missed by many friends and relatives. The family suggest any memorial be made to your local Alzheimer Society (11/1/1997).
