Brodie MacDonald
Alberta
Our Beloved Brodie was taken from us in a tragic accident on the Lost Coast Hike in Northern California. He and another boy were swept out to sea attempting a rescue.
Brodie was a most precious boy who was beloved by all for his kind and giving nature, his humour, his grace, and his style. He was a young man in the prime of his youth; he was a joy to all. We will never forget you Brodie. Our hearts have been torn by this tragedy.
Most of his family has spent four days grieving and healing on the bluffs above Black Sand Cove where he died. Brodie’s spirit came to all of us and he is at peace in a better place. He died in a most beautiful place doing what he loved.
Mourning his loss is his mother and stepfather, Hazel & Mike Koschel; his father, Tom MacDonald; his brother Nathan MacDonald; grandparents Joyce and Bud Byram; aunts, uncles and cousins, Ron, Lisa and Amy Byram; Ken, Ellen, Joe and Eric Byram; Darlene, Brad, Keyotn, Jared, Greg and Tessa Wilson. Nova Scotia relatives, Ron, Debbie, Rhonda and Jay Walker; Sandy, Scott and Kim Pruden; Joan, John, Kelly and J.T. MacLellan; Art, Catherine, Pamela, Arthur and Tracy MacDonald. In Calgary, Ann, John and Stewart Elton, and so many friends, relatives and teachers. Brodie touched many lives.
Brodie loved the outdoors, hiking, fly-fishing, golfing, snowboarding, biking, and socializing with his many friends. His dream was to be an Ecotourist outdoor leader. Most of all he loved to fly fish in the Bow River. He was so excited about the biology and ecology of the river.
Nathan writes this: “If there was one way he would want to die it would have been exactly this. He was a hero. In any dangerous situation he would be the one to solve it by risking his life. He loved the outdoors, every part of it, he treated it like it was his family. We will miss Brodie. He was the bravest kid out there. Bye Brodie.”
The families want to say a profound thanks to the community of Shelter Cove who have adopted us and taken care of us in such a loving way. Thank you also to all of the many, many people involved in the search and rescue. Your community has been unbelievable.
In lieu of flowers we will be accepting donations which will be given to a group involved in the ecology of the Bow River: Alberta River Conservation Foundation, PO Box 279, Carseland, AB, TOJ OM0, or a charity of your choice.
On Thursday, March 30, a memorial service for both boys who went to California was held for family members and the Shelter Cove community near the place where they died.
Brodie’s funeral service will be held at St. David’s United Church (3303 Capitol Hill Crescent N.W.), Tuesday, April 4, at 2 p.m. with Ralph Spencer and Katherine Pace officiating. All are welcome.
In living memory of Brodie, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McInnis and Holloway Funeral Homes, “Park Memorial Chapel”, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W.
