- Shop now for incredible insights into your wellbeing -DINGMAN-MACHEN -- Joan E. Dingman-Machen passed away peacefully at the Agape Manor Hospice on November 13, 1997 at the age of 72 years. Joan was born September 20, 1925, a true native Calgarian. Following her graduation from Western Canada High School she was employed with the Royal Bank of Canada where she spent over forty years. Joan married Ed Machen in October of 1983. They spent six wonderful years together travelling and generally having a ball. Ed passed away in 1989 leaving a large void in Joan's life but this did not keep her from being active in such things as the Calgary Winter Club and the African Violet Society. Joan loved her petit-point and also was a collector of owl figurines, which no one knows just how many she had. Also, Joan was an avid and accomplished Bridge player which she played right up to the end. All these memories and more will be remembered of Joan. We will all miss her. She is survived by brothers, Robert (Bob) Dingman and wife Gena of Wetaskiwin, John A. Dingman and wife Betty of Vancouver, along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends. FLICK -- Walter Harvey. passed away peacefully at the Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, Burlington, Ontario on Thursday, November 13, 1997, age 80 years. Dearly beloved husband of Jessie Lucille. Proud and loving father of Donna and Vic Murai, Wendy and Ted Slightham, and Brad and Daphne Flick. Our Papa will be sadly missed by his seven grandchildren, Chris and Jeff Slightham, Lyndsay, Joanna and Kimberly Flick, and Jamie and Sarah Murai. Walter will be missed by his many nieces, nephews and cousins in Calgary and Burnham-on-Crouch, England. Predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Lillian Flick, and sister Violet Newstead and her husband Bob, all of Calgary. Walter served overseas during World War II with the 8th Canadian Reconnaissance Unit, was a longtime member of Timothy Eaton Memorial United Church, Toronto, Wellington Square United Church, Burlington and the Burlington Curling Club. FOX -- On November 11, 1997, Elizabeth Fox passed away, aged 86 years. GILLESPIE -- H.W. (Don) Gillespie of Burlingame, CA passed away on November 3, 1997. Born in Calgary on January 30, 1910 to Anna and Robert Gillespie, educated in Calgary, he served in the R.C.A.F. from 1940 to 1946. Don began his career in the bakery industry in Calgary and became a well-known personality in that industry in the U.S.A., particularly in California, Hawaii and Illinois. A member of the Patricia Masonic Lodge of Edmonton, he was noted for his kind and gentle spirit, a true gentleman respected and well-liked by all who knew him. Don is survived by his loving wife of fifty-four years, Bettie; two sons, Donald (Lynn) of Wasilla, Alaska, and Thomas of Redding, CA; two grandsons, Joshua and Dustin of Wasilla; his sisters, Muriel Dowler of Calgary and Emily (N.B.) Cole of Greenbrae, CA; his brothers, Ted (Hazel) of Invermere, BC, and Roy (Boog) of Calgary. Private Funeral arrangements by the Neptune Society of California.
GINGRAS -- Maurice A. Gingras of High River passed away surrounded by his loving family on November 12, 1997 at the age of 76 years. He leaves to mourn his passing, his loving wife of forty-six years, Georgette; his children, Madeleine (John) Kane, Lorrette (Bruce) Wilson, Rita (Terry) Jukes, all of Calgary, Louise (Al) Phalen of Okotoks, Paul (Cynthia) of Bonnyville and Peter (Sandy) of Lethbridge; and by thirteen grandchildren; and sisters, Juliet Ward of Edmonton and Helen Crawford of Victoria, B.C. Maurice was born and raised in the Brant-Ensign area and farmed there for some twenty-five years prior to his retirement to High River in 1976. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff of the High River Hospital Nursing Home for the care Maurice received while a resident and for the special care given to the family. HOFFMAN -- Helen Patricia, 85, left us peacefully November 12, 1997 at Invermere and District Hospital. She is loved and cherished by her daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Henry Hoffmann of Invermere; grandchildren, Brian (Sandra) Hoffmann of Nanaimo, BC, Brenda (Greg) Stapleton of Powell River, BC and Eve (Ron) Macmillan of Calgary. Her husband Tony Hoffman, in 1979, predeceased Helen. The care given her by the physicians and especially the excellent nursing staff of the Invermere Hospital Extended Care Unit has been a comfort to her and her family. HOLMES -- Mr. Francis (Frank) Holmes of Calgary, passed away at the Glamorgan Nursing Home on November 12, 1997 at the age of 80 years. He is survived by his loving companion and caregiver Hilda of Calgary; two children, Dale Holmes of Terrace, B.C. and Debbie and her husband Doug Hardy of Airdrie; seven grandchildren, Scott, Tracey, Gillian, Blake, Mark, Chad and Kevin; four great-grandchildren, Riley, Jaimie, Steven and Eric; two sisters, Phyllis Elvin and Ethel Allen; and numerous nieces, nephews and many friends. HORNBERGER -- Freda Josephina, beloved wife of the late Marcus Hornberger of Calgary, passed away November 11, 1997 at the age of 80 years. She is survived by her nine children, Leon (Lois) of Orem, Utah, Sheila (Mark) Strang of Victoria, B.C., Andrew (Judith) of Vancouver, Washington, Judith (Jack) Castle of Frederick, Maryland, Martin (Sally) of Cassville, Missouri, Stephen (Linda), Mathew (Anne), and Roger, all of Calgary, and May Ellen (Don) Fairbanks of Fort Collins, Colorado; forty-five grandchildren, forty great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and a brother John Svenson. She was predeceased by her husband Marcus in January of 1996, three sisters, a brother, and a grandson. Freda was born and raised in Orton, Alberta. She graduated from Normal School in Calgary and taught in one-room schools for two years. Later, she taught for twelve years at the Alberta Vocational Centre in Calgary. In 1941, she married Marcus and in 1944 they moved to Calgary where they raised their family. Freda always worked hard, serving her family, friends and neighbors. She loved to read and shared that love with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Freda was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities. The family would like to thank all of the staff of the Bow View Manor for their tender, loving care of Mom. She will be lovingly remembered in our hearts. JORGENSEN -- Ethel May Jorgensen, beloved wife of Andy Jorgensen of High River and formerly of Blackie, passed away at the Willow Creek Auxiliary Hospital at Claresholm on November 12, 1997 at the age of 85 years. She was born to Herman and Florence Millard in their homestead home at Jenner, Alberta on May 24, 1912. She received her education at Jenner, Brooks and Calgary. After received her teaching degree, she returned to Jenner to teach for three years at the Millard School. In 1934 she married Andy and they farmed near Jenner for the next ten years. It was while they were there that their three children were born. In 1944 they came to the Blackie area to farm until their retirement. From 1962 onward they made High River their home. While there, Ethel and Andy enjoyed many trips to various parts of the world. Ethel's special kindness and concern for her friends and neighbours was always expressed with her ready smile and kind words. Her newsy Christmas letters were legendary with those who lived far away. Besides her husband Andy, Ethel is survived by her children, Shirley Stein of Hedley, B.C., David and Connie Jorgensen of Hermiston, Oregon and Frances Fleischman of High River; her sisters, Alice and Harold Nielsen of Elnora, and Iva and Don Naegeli of Drumheller; six grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her beloved son-in-law Milt Fleischman, her grandson Jonathan Gritten, and two great-granddaughters, Sarah Harquail and Rachel Stanhope. KATARIUS -- Josephine (Jo) (nee Garland) passed away peacefully at the Bethany Care Centre in Calgary on November 12, 1997. Jo was born on October 28, 1931 in Edinburgh, Scotland. She was evacuated to Canada during the Second World War and after returning, graduated, trained and worked as a nurse and midwife in the Edinburgh area. Jo immigrated to Canada in 1955 and worked in various hospitals in Western Canada until she married in 1957. Later in life she received a BFA from the University of Calgary in 1979. Jo traveled extensively and remained active for several years prior to entering the Bethany Care Centre. Jo is survived by her husband Bill; children, Bryan of Kelowna, John of Calgary, Lori of Calgary, and Kathryn Radford and son-in-law John Radford of Calgary. Jo is also survived by six grandchildren; her mother Janet Garland of Edmonton; sister Kathleen Correia of Edmonton; and brother Bryan of Moncton, N.B. She was predeceased by her father William Garland in 1987 in Edmonton and daughter-in-law Ellen in 1997 in Kelowna, B.C. Jo was an energetic and creative person who will be dearly missed by all. Memorial tributes to the Calgary Alzheimers Society or other charitable organizations will be welcome.
