Predeceased by mother 1967, father 1971, survived by brothers Richard and Carl and several nieces and nephews.

NIEMI -- Ida Maria Niemi passed away on October 19, 1997 at the age of 97 years, 11 months and 5 days, at the extended care unit of the Canmore General Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband August in 1955, her sister Lydia in 1984, and her sister Lily in 1989. She will forever be lovingly remembered by her daughter Eila and her husband Mike Dyrgas; her son Melvin and his wife Elke; her three grandchildren, Darrel Dyrgas, Cory and Carolynne Niemi; and her two great-grandchildren, Parise and Destiny Dyrgas; her sister Jenny Latvala and her brother John Niemi; and by her many nieces and nephews and friends. Ida was born in Alavus, Finland on November 13, 1899; she came to Canmore, with her family in April in 1912. She resided in Canmore most of her life; after her husband passed away she worked at the Old Canmore Hospital for almost eighteen years. She also did a lot of baby-sitting and housecleaning for many families in Canmore, and loved every minute of it. She also loved her Bingos and playing Crib; she and her sisters spent many happy hours with their card games. Her love for life and her wonderful sense of humour will be sadly missed by all those who knew her. Funeral Services for Ida will be held on Friday, October 24, 1997 at the Ralph Conner Memorial United Church, 617 - 8 Street, Canmore, Alberta at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Catherine McLean officiating. NORTHCOTT -- Charles Arthur Northcott passed away in Brooks on October 21, 1997 at the age of 87 years. Charlie is survived by his loving wife Rose of Brooks; his children, Ron and his wife Gerry of Calgary, Shirley and her husband Lloyd Iles of Stettler and Larry and his wife Edith of Calgary; eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren; three sisters, Truda Field of Ladner, BC, Ruth Dakin of Vancouver and Helen Holditch of White Rock, BC; two brothers, Len and Harold of Milo; and numerous nieces and nephews. Born on the family farm in the Milo area, Charlie moved to Claresholm and had worked in a grocery store there which began a long career in grocery retail. Charlie had managed a store in Innisfail and later owned and operated stores in Milo and Vulcan. He moved to Brooks and purchased the IGA in 1959 which he ran until selling the business in 1970. Charlie was predeceased by his first wife Ruth in June of 1982 and a daughter Betty Ann in March of 1995. RENNIE -- Phyllis Lorraine died in Victoria, BC, on October 20, 1997. She was predeceased by her husband Gordon, and is survived by her daughters, Sharon (Jorge) and Noreen (Richard); son Bradford (Faye); granddaughters, Nika, Nadine and Sara; sisters, Louise, Bernice and Tiny; and brothers, Sonny and Freddie. Born in Prince Rupert, BC, on August 19, 1926. Phyllis lived on the prairies for many years and returned to the west coast she loved in 1991. She enjoyed reading, gardening, walking her dog Simmy, spending time with family and crocheting for friends and the needy. She will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends. SAYERS -- John Alexander Sayers, of Calgary, passed away October 20, 1997 at the age of 68 years after a very courageous battle with emphysema. He will be sadly missed by his beloved and loyal companion of over twenty-five years, Dorothy; his children, Buck, Peter, Archie and Linda; a brother Clarence; and other relatives and friends in Calgary and the Olds/Sundre area. John worked in the Olds/Sundre area as a farm labourer and oilfield construction worker before moving to Calgary in 1977. While in Calgary, John was employed in various labourer positions. He has worked with the city of Calgary Parks Department for the past ten to twelve years, until his illness forced him to retire a few short years ago. He was a very compassionate and caring person to his friends, sometimes going out of his own way to help them with financial problems or to share the fruits of his own labour. He will be sadly missed. SHULZ -- S. Kim (Vernon). Kim passed away October 20, 1997. The kind and gentle mother of Christopher, David and Timothy; sister of Else, Martin and Lorraine. The most important time in her life was to remain home and raise her sons. Kim graduated from St. Michael's School of Nursing and spent thirteen of her happiest years nursing in Calgary. She spoke lovingly of co-workers Luleen, Ewa, Nancy, Debbie, Ramza, Cory and Barb Endman who were so supportive and made a difference in her life. She had a special love for Sharon, Connie, Cory and Hal and her beloved Dustin, Lucas and Jackson. She missed Reg, her loving compassionate friend and Donna, an earth angel, both who passed away before their time. Nieces and nephews, Jill, Brent, Terry, Dan, Kevin, Michael and Rachell and their partners and loved ones held a special place in her heart. She will miss Merle - longtime friend who always made the good times better and the hard days easier. She felt fortunate to have Sandi and Joe and Yvonne as caring neighbors. She will miss Bethany residents John and Ruth. Kim openly stated her opposition to violence against women, and wished to see men taking a stand with men and working to end violence and terror against men, women and children. She was involved in MADD and the Women's Shelters, and 745 Faint Hope Clause. Kim loved the out of doors, wildlife - the sun - and the peacefulness of the farm along the creek at Millarville, the precious hours with Martin, Lorraine and Else. TAVERNER -- Louis Taverner passed away at home in Calgary on October 21, 1997 at the age of 81 years. Born January 19, 1916 in Lougheed, Alberta, he resided in Calgary from the time of his early boyhood. He leaves behind his loving wife Elaine; children, Paul of St. Albert, Bob of Calgary, and Carole Blouin of Calgary; six grandchildren, Todd, Tim, Tracy and Tyler Taverner and Michael and Marc Blouin; as well as three great-grandchildren, Connor, Cameron and Maeghan. He is also survived by his brother Bob of Calgary; and sisters, Connie Duncan and Babs Hayman of Delta, B.C. Lou was predeceased by his daughter Judy in 1945. Lou was Past-President of the Downtown Lion's Club, a member of Officers Mess and an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Kensington Branch. UY BOMPING -- Petronila Uy Bomping passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital on Monday, October 20, 1997 at the age of 93 years. She is survived by her son Roberto (Dory) of Hawaii; daughters, Loreta Lasig and Estelita (Nick) Sanchez, both of Calgary; and daughter-in-law Josie Uy of California; ten grandchildren, Rosalinda, Raquelle (Romel), Robert, Roseanne, Rosemarie of Calgary; Ritchie, Ruth, Robert and Rocky of the Philippines; Philip Jose of California; and two great-grandchildren, Kristina and Kristoffer of Calgary. She is predeceased by her husband Felipe, son Jaime, and son-in-law Renato. VANGASTEL -- Annette (Pat) VanGastel (nee: Dreger) of Calgary, passed away peacefully at the Peter Lougheed Hospital on October 18, 1997. She will be sadly missed by her two sisters, Edna Sullivan of Regina, SK and Katherine Hallett of Calgary, AB; numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and by many friends. She was predeceased by her husband Thomas (Tom) VanGastel, her mother and father, Emma and Gustave Dreger, four sisters and four brothers.
