Mrs. Helen 'Ella' Gallant, of Calgary, passed away peacefully at the Bowcrest Nursing Home on March 31, 2002 at the age of 84 years. Helen 'Ella' will be dearly missed by her family, sister, Julia Elizabeth O'Keefe of Victoria, BC; son Gus (Julie) of Barrie, Ontario; grandson, Jamie (Angela); great grandchildren, Tiana, Trevor, granddaughter, Cathy Lynn, great grandchildren, Megan and Davis, grandson, Gus Jr. (Kim), great granddaughter Tori, grandson Greg (Sarah), great grandsons, Jacob and Cameron; son Dennis (Diane) of Barrie, Ontario. Grandson, Dennis (Lisa), great grandchildren Haley and Brooke, grandson Donald, great grandchildren Brandon, Kyle, granddaughter, Crystal; son, David (Georgina) of Okotoks. Grandchildren Trevor and God-daughter Christina. Helen was predeceased by her infant daughter Alice in 1961, son William on April 15, 1997. Survived by (Linda), grandchildren, Tammy and Dean. Helen was born May 26, 1917 in Grand Falls, Newfoundland. On August 2, 1943, Helen enlisted in the Canadian Army as a Private in Nova Scotia and served until her discharge on May 16, 1944. She met Murray while in the army and they were married on June 14, 1944 at Reserve Mines, Nova Scotia. Helen was a fun loving person. She was very active in the Catholic Church. In her spare time she loved to play Bingo and a good game of cards.
A funeral service was held at Snodgrass Funeral Chapel, 200 Woodgate Rd., Okotoks, on Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at 12 pm. The Reverend Father John Bastigal officiated. Interment followed at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Calgary.

Helen Mannix
Mrs. Helen Mannix of Calgary, passed away at the Foothills Hospital on January 13, 2002 at the age of 79 years.
Helen was born in Columbus, North Dakota on November 9, 1922 and was raised in Okotoks, later residing in Calgary. She enjoyed cooking and baking.
Helen is survived by her two daughters and a son-in-law, Terry and Bob Rice of DeWinton, AB and Joan LaRocke of Strathmore, AB; a grandson, Dean; and great-granddaughter, Hailey. She is also survived by her sister, Evelyn Gray of Calgary; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral Services were held at McInnis & Holloway's 'Eastside Memorial Chapel,' (5388 Memorial Drive N.E., Calgary) on Friday, January 18, 2002 at 1 pm with the Rev. Robert F. J. Stones
Robert F. J. Stones, fondly known as 'Stoney' passed away January 15, 2002 at the age of 75 years at the Rockyview General Hospital.
He is survived by his beloved wife Gladys, daughters Vicky (Grant) Arthurs, Gloria (Allan) Thickett, Valerie (John) Stones of Calgary, and a son Albert in York, England. He is lovingly remembered and sadly missed as a grandfather by his grandchildren Trevor, Brandi, Cory Arthurs; Jason and Kristina Thickett and Samantha, Tiffany and Travis Bruneau. Dad was born on January 5, 1927 in Lethbridge, Alberta and raised west of Fort Macleod where his parents farmed. Moved to Calgary in 1947 where he worked at Cheetam Sheet & Metal and Flesher Marble & Tile. He started at Canadian Western Natural Gas Co. (Atco) in 1954 and worked as a mechanic until his retirement in 1987. He married Gladys (nee Arthur) in September 1950 in Banff. They resided in Calgary then Midnapore until 1969, then moving to DeWinton area. Dad was proud to be the Scoutmaster of the Midnapore 75th scout troop for many years. They had lots of happy memories for him.

Survived also by one sister Darlene (Wayne) Becker of Kelowna, B.C. and 14 nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by sister Kathy b'Haene in 1993 and father Robert in 1994.

Virgil Morris Brown
Mr. Virgil Morris Brown passed away after a courageous battle, at the Rockyview Hospital, Calgary, Alberta, on Friday, January 18, 2002 at the age of 88 years. He was born in Crossfield, Alberta on May 24, 1913. He now joins his wife Lois Brown, parents, two sisters and five brothers. He is loved by many and will always be remembered by his smile and sense of humour. He is survived by his one brother: Glen Brown (Eleanor), two daughters: Ledean Whiteside (Bill Cole) and Lorraine Moffat, his grandchildren: Gena (Brent), Trent (Marlene), Travis (Dusty) and Rosanna, and his great grandchildren, Tamala, Tyler, Kylie and Bradi.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Groves and hospital staff for their kindness and compassion. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be sent towards the purchase of a Total Care Bed for Unit 59, at the Rockyview Hospital.

Herbert Herman Oliemans of Okotoks was born January 15, 1935 in Jakarta, Indonesia and passed away on January 19, 2002.

Huibert Herman Oliemans
January 15, 1935 - January 19, 2002
Herb was born in Jakarta, Indonesia of Dutch parents. His father was a banker, He was the youngest of three children (2 sons, 1 daughter). After Japan entered WWII, the family was separated into internment camps. His father and brother (13) were placed in separate men's work camps. His mother, sister (10) and Herb (7) together with an aunt and cousins were in another camp. They were interned three-and-a-half years until the end of the war.
Following the war, all Dutch citizens were sent to Holland where Herb began his formal schooling at age 11. At age 14 he began Agricultural school, which lasted 4 years. Herb became an exchange student to England at age 18. Herb immigrated to Canada in 1955 at age 20. He worked on a dairy farm outside Calgary for 6 months and then moved to Calgary and found a job as a labourer in construction. He learned to plaster then drywall taping. Herb continued to have a great interest in birds, animals and gardening. He built many aviaries and raised tropical birds. He also has had rabbits, chickens, ducks, geese, sheep and a horse over the years.
Herb met his wife Lona (Moors) in 1957 and married in 1960. They had two daughters Jane and Jennifer, two sons-in-law Harley and Allen and six grandchildren Jacob (7), Emily (5), Bradford (16), Nicole (14), Melissa (12) and Kristopher (8).
The family moved from Calgary in 1973 to 5 acres at DeWinton and Herb started his own drywall contracting company, Superlative Drywall Ltd. At times he employed up to 20 men. He was an organized and self-taught businessman. He spent his spare time building housing for the entire menagerie of animals he had on the acreage. He continued to be very involved with rabbit and bird clubs. He bred and judged rabbits and guinea pigs in various shows including the Millarville Fair and Calgary Exhibition and Stampede. Herb also spent many hours in the garden, growing many varieties of vegetables, tress, shrubs and flowers. Herb truly loved life in the country.
Herb came to know the Lord and was baptized in 1984. His faith was very important to him and he went to Cursillo in the fall of 1989. Herb was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was happy with the simple things in life. Herb will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Besides his wife, daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren, Herb is also survived by his sister-in-law Loes Oliemans in Holland and nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles in Holland, Australia and New Zealand. Herb was predeceased by his parents William and Petronella Oliemans, his brother Jim Oliemans and his sister and brother-in-law Amy and Rudy deKoning.
Funeral services were held at St. Peter's Anglican Church, Okotoks, on Thursday, January 24, 2002 with Rev. Father Paul Orritt officiating, assisted by Rev. Richard LeSueur.
