HARRY HOBBS
It is with profound sadness that the loving family of Harry Hobbs announce his unexpected passing on Monday, November 28, at 11:30 am, one day short of his 78 birthday.
Harry was born on November 29, 1927 in High River, Alberta.
He was the third child of Charlie Hobbs and was predeceased by his infant brother, his older sister Lillian, his younger sister Joyce as well as his first wife Joan Hobbs.
Harry was a truly wonderful and well-respected husband, father, grandfather and man. He is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Kathy, his son Bill (Rose), daughter Idella (Bob) Forfylow, his two awesome grandchildren Andrea (Kevin) and Mike Forfylow and his younger sister Fran Taylor. Harry gifted our world with his many gifts and talents. A true cowboy at heart, he was a natural, kind horseman, a knowledgeable cattleman and a wonderful hand with stock dogs. He was a man who just knew a little about everything.
In our eyes Harry was a skilled vet, tradesman, handyman and farmer. He shared these talents with friends and acquaintances around the country and we were lucky to learn from his stories and daily work. Harry began his colorful career cowboying in the Handhills Country where he enjoyed years of trailing the Stampede horses to the Calgary Stampede Rodeo. He was a longtime volunteer for the Calgary Stampede and Exhibition and enjoyed many Stampede Parades, rodeos and chuckwagon races. He was recognized as an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede for his many contributions over the years.
Harry was proud of his years on the racetrack working with thoroughbred horses and subsequently working with the brood mares of Mr. Frank McMahon.
Following his early years, Harry began working as a rancher and farmer in the Okotoks area. He was well known as a premier breeder of Appaloosa horses as well as Simmental cattle on his beautiful ranch along the Sheep River Valley. As a 4H leader, he was admired by his club members for his kind and caring manner and his vast knowledge of beef cattle.
In his later years, he spent many years riding cutting horses, raising peacocks and pheasants.
Above all else, Harry’s true gift to his world was his role as a husband, father and grandfather.
His wonderful sense of humor and sharp wit, met with a love of teasing, will be greatly missed. His amazing knowledge of animals including dogs, horses and cattle, his farming ability and knowledge of machinery, will be passed on to future generations and cherished by many.
At Harry’s request, there will be no funeral service held. In lieu of flowers, donations made in Harry’s name can be made towards the Foothills Hospice, Box 274, Okotoks, AB T1S 1A5.
A sincere thank you to the Palliative Care Team at the Foothills Hospital and his wonderful nurses at the Red Deer Hospital who all did so much to support Harry and his family.
Cremation has taken place at Parklawn Crematorium.
