On July 13, 2011, Art, passed away at the age
of 83 years.
He is dearly missed by his wife, Thelma;
children, Randy, Lana (Brian) and Brenda

YAKUBOW, Jean
On Monday, July 11, 2011, Jean Yakubow of
Sherwood Park, AB passed away at the age
of 91 years.
Jean is survived by her loving family: children,
Rodney (Norma), Margaret (Ken), Silk, and
Paulette (Len) Chmilar; seven grandchildren,
fourteen great-grandchildren and four great–
great-grandchildren; two sisters and
numerous relatives and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on

SCHIEWE, Bill (William)
On Wednesday, July 13, 2011 Bill Schiewe
passed away at the fine age of 92 years, in the
excellent care of the Hardisty Nursing Home.
Bill will be missed by all and funeral
arrangements will be announced in the
Edmonton Journal on Tuesday, July 19, 2011.
Markovich, Mary
MARKOVICH, Mary Olive Sarah (nee HISSETT)
July 9, 1934 — July 7, 2011
On July 7 our beloved mother, grandmother,
wife and friend Mary Markovich went to be
with her Lord and savior after a short battle
with cancer.
She is survived by her loving husband Ernie,
sons Larry, Terry and Stewart Carson (Anola),
grandchildren Krystal, Amie, Jesse, Cody,
Nicole, Lisa, Donna, James, Rachel, Malachi,
her sister Shirley Sander and sister-in-law,
Evy Hissett. She was predeceased by her son
Ken and her mom and dad, Kate and Herb
Hissett, and brother Harold.
Born on the farm near Abee, Alberta, Mary
learned the discipline of hard work and
neighborliness that were to serve her well all
of her life.
Mary attended the Vermillion School of
Agriculture and worked in administration in
several government offices, including Indian
& Northern Affairs and Unemployment. She
later worked for Edmonton Co-op in human
resources before finally managing a small
apartment with Ernie.
Mary loved people. She loved helping and
serving them, always going out of her way to
aid those especially in need. Mary was an avid
gardener who enjoyed the outdoors. She and
Ernie were very active in the Kleen Air Square
Dancing Club and spent many an evening with
their dancing friends.
Mary took great joy in her family, friends and
neighbors, remaining in close telephone
contact if she could not meet face to face.
We love you Mom and will cherish you in our
hearts and memories until we meet up with
you again. You will be so missed.
Celebration of Mary’s life Saturday, July 23
at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Baptist Church, 11908 -
132 Avenue. Donations can be made to the

DRIVER, Maurita (Rita)
March 7, 1926 — July 8, 2011
On Friday, Rita passed away peacefully at
home, aged 85 years.
She will be missed by her children, Chris
(Veronica) Webb in Australia; Rosemary
Roberts in New Zealand and Barbara (Wayne)
Jansen in Edmonton; and her grandchildren,
Richard, Adam, Jason, Katrina and Zachary;
and her sister, Eileen (Eddie) Woods in
England. Rita’s spontaneous nature and
positve outlook on life endeared her to
everyone she met.
Many thanks to the staff and residents
at Montgomery Legion Place; the
Commonwealth Lawn Bowling Club and the
Edmonton Seniors Association and fellow
volunteers. A private family gathering will be
held to celebrate her long and fullfilled life.
ADAM, Gordon Samuel
July 30, 1929 July 13, 2011
After a long battle with cancer, Gordon
passed away on July 13, 2011 at the age of 81.
Gordons memory will live on through his
devoted partner of 41 years, Bill Brumbalow,
brother Ben (Meta), sister Elinor (Eddie)
Klapstein, nieces, nephews and many friends.
Gordon was predeceased by his parents
Bernard and Lydia Adam, brother Edwin and
sister-in-law Anne.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Heimtal
Moravian Church, R.R. 3, S. Edmonton, AB (go
west off Highway 2, on Ellerslie Road, to 127
Street, 5 km South on 127 Street), at 1:00
p.m. on Tuesday, July 19, 2011.

NICHOLSON, Mildred Joan (Danchuk)
On June 29, 2011, Mildred Nicholson of
Edmonton died at the age of 98 years.
She will be lovingly remembered by her
sisters: Mary Martin of Vernon, B.C., Jennye
Clearwater and Verona Danchuk of
Edmonton, along with numerous nieces,
nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband
Edwin in 1956.
A Mass of Christian Burial took place at
St. Agnes Catholic Parish in Edmonton, on
July 4, 2011 with Father Paul Moret officiating;
followed by interment at St. Anthony’s
Cemetery.
Mildred’s cheerfulness, great sense of
humor, compassion and generosity will be
remembered by all who knew her.

Suddenly at his residence Harvey James
Hartfelder aged 63 years, beloved husband
of Bernice Hartfelder of Thorsby, Alberta
passed away.

HANSEN, Edith Myrtle
Born February 23, 1924 Wawota, Sask.
Died July 7, 2011 Onoway, Alberta
Edith was born to George (deceased) and
Hazel (Campbell) (deceased) Ramage and
grew up on a farm near Wawota, Sask. She
was one of 15 children who most moved to
many different towns when they left home,
that covered the four western provinces. She
is predeceased by husband Fred and
grandson Robert Lee in 2002. She is also
predeceased by sisters and brothers, Eva,
Jean, Edna, Minnie, Alice, Angus (died in
infancy), Alex, Ruth, and Olive. She is survived
by son Lorne Hansen (Doris) (Edgewater, BC)
and grandson Darrin (Lesia) (Calgary, AB),
daughter Dixie Lee (Cecil) and granddaughter
Marnie (Edmonton, AB), son Andy Hansen
(Sylvan Lake, AB). She is also survived by
brothers Hugh and Eric (Wawota, Sask), Allen
(Squamish, BC), Ian (Winnipeg, Man.), sister
Shirley (Strathmore, AB) and many nieces
and nephews.
She married Fred Hansen of Edgewater, BC in
1950, and they lived in many places in BC,
including Fernie for many years, as his job as a
carpenter required him to move to support
his family. Edgewater, BC, however, was
always considered home. Edith was a hair
dresser and helped the family by doing hair in
her home. She also worked on Christmas
tree farms for many years in Edgewater. In
1997 Edith and Fred moved to Alberta to be
closer to family, with whom Edith lived until
2009 when she moved to the Chateau Lac St.
Anne in Onoway. She spent her final weeks at
home with Dixie and Cecil and surrounded by
her family.

Services and Dr. D. Van Schalkwyk.
A Memorial Service will be held at Chateau
Lac St. Anne in Onoway on July 16 at 2:00
p.m. A Graveside Service will be held on July
23 at the cemetery in Edgewater, BC.

September 18, 1919 - July 10, 2011
On Sunday, July 10, 2011, Mrs. Martha
Grueger passed away at the age of 91 years.
She leaves to mourn her loss her children,
Edeltraut (Otto) Bittner, Siegfried (Kim) and
Rosemarie Black; nine grandchildren; eleven
great-grandchildren; one great-great–
grandson; sister, Lydia Arnold; and many
relatives in Germany. She was predeceased
by her husband, Reinhold; son, Helmut;
daughter, Helga; and sister, Melanie.

Margaret passed away suddenly at her home
on July 6, 2011.
She is survived by her loving husband Ed;
daughter Carol; seven sisters; one brother
and numerous nieces and nephews.
