TOMLINSON, Grace Edna Alberta (nee MacDonald)
July 16, 1924 to November 13, 2011
Grace passed away at the University of Alberta Hospital on Sunday afternoon. During her last few days she had visits from all of her children and grandchildren, her two week old great grandson, and many other family members and friends.
She was the youngest of six children born to John Angus and Bertie (Stowe) MacDonald, and was predeceased by her sisters Ethel Dyson, Flora Mason, Margaret Martin, and Anne Jarvos, and her brother George MacDonald. Learning to live without her are her loving husband Alfred Tomlinson, daughter Donna (John) Mazanek, sons Stew (Sharon) Tomlinson, and Bill (Donna) Tomlinson. Her grandchildren and great– grandchildren were so important to her, and they too will miss her. They are Shane (Sonia) Mazanek and Cassidy and Vanessa, Blair (Laura Acott) Mazanek, Steven (Katlyn) Tomlinson and Ronin , Stacey (Mike) Cowan and Raelyn and Jordan, Dana Tomlinson and Brady. Dana said, “Grandma, we always knew who was the boss!” Her grandson Jesse predeceased her.
Grace was born in Miniota, MB, and the family moved to Morse, SK, where her early years were difficult. Her father died when she was only ten years old. On her 18th birthday, during WWII she joined the WRENs, and spent time in both Halifax and Victoria. To the end, she reminisced about her days at Royal Roads. After the war, she studied hairdressing in Saskatoon, and was invited home to St. Walburg, SK, by a friend. It was there that she met Alfred, and they have been almost inseparable since then, marrying on July 3rd, 1946. 65 wonderful years!
Loon Lake, SK was home from 1946 to 1957 when Alfred rejoined the Air Force. From there, homes were in Winnipeg, then overseas to Grostenquin, Marville, and Metz, France, and back to Cold Lake until Alfred’s retirement from the military in 1973. At that time, Alfred’s work took them to Edmonton, Kelowna and Hay River. In 1984, they built their retirement home in Loon Lake, where they remained until just after their 50th anniversary in July 1996, when they returned to Edmonton.
Grace enjoyed many things… making a comfortable home, baking, summers at the cabin in Loon Lake, spending time with good friends, escaping the cold for a few months in Yuma, trips to Reno and Las Vegas. She loved sports, especially tennis and softball in her youth, later golf for fun, and curling at which she excelled. When she could no longer play, she was an avid armchair coach for curling as well as hockey, football and golf. Her love for the horse races made for many an enjoyable day at the track– Always bet on the Gray!
Grace was very independent, and totally protective of all her family. We will all have our special memories of her, and are comforted knowing she no longer suffers.
Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
The family would like to thank Dr. Robert Carter at Gateway Medical Clinic for his care during the last fifteen years, and the wonderful staff at 5-C4 University Hospital for being both professional and compassionate in their care over the past several days.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
