Bill passed away on July 15, 2012 at the cabin at Pigeon Lake. His health had declined in recent months and the family is happy that he was able to leave this world from his favorite spot. WIENS, Irene Eleanor
It is with heavy hearts we mark the peaceful passing of mother, gramma, sister, and friend from this world to the next. Irene Wiens (née Dueck) was born 9 May 1933 in Gem, Alberta, and died 12 July 2012 in Edmonton.

Her husband John, daughter Edie, parents Nick and Anne, brother Herman, and sister Edna predeceased Irene.
Irene’s life was characterized by deep faith in God, gratitude, and her favourite question: “What can I do to help?” Even as dementia advanced, Irene found things to be thankful for, things to enjoy, and occasions to be helpful. She loved music, often harmonizing along with recordings, and sometimes performances. From her core she was grateful and positive and encouraged those around her. On her 79th birthday, in hospital with a broken hip, she celebrated surrounded by family and commented: “It doesn’t get better than this!” We continue to learn from her legacy of thankfulness and a life of loving others.
There will be a viewing on Sunday, 22 July 2012 at 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., with family in attendance, at Serenity Funeral Service (5311–91 Street, Edmonton). We will celebrate her life and mourn her passing with a memorial service Monday 23 July 2012 at 1:30 p.m., at Lendrum Mennonite Brethren Church (11210–59 Avenue, Edmonton), followed by interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
