MADSEN -- Anna Margaret February 8, 1915 - April 7, 2007
Anna passed away peacefully at the Continuing Care Unit in the Drumheller Hospital where she has resided for the last 3 1/2 years. Anna will be sadly missed by her son Alfred and daughter Elsie (Bill) Treacy; six grandchildren - Jody (Jeff) Barrett, Jeff Madsen, Cheryl (Will) Chapman, Shelley (Jim) Keough, Calvin (Oksana) Treacy and Mitchell (Rhonda) Treacy; 14 great-grandchildren - Bryce, Kari and Kailyn Madsen, Anna and Trina Barrett, Soren and James Chapman, Emily and Madeline Keough, Samantha, Alexander and Melissa Treacy, Cade and Abbey Treacy. Also one brother Harry Gustavsen of Strathmore and one sister, Freida Ricard of Calgary. Anna was born in Rock Springs, Wyoming in 1915. When she was just two months old her parents moved to the Hussar area where they purchased land and began farming. Anna was raised on the farm, attending school in Hussar, most days walking along the railroad tracks to get there. In 1935 she married Soren Madsen and together they farmed west of Hussar until Soren’s death in 1983. In 1987 Anna moved to Strathmore until July of 2003 when she moved to Drumheller. Memorial services will be held at Our Savior’s Community Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. in Hussar on April 14. Memorial donations may be made to the Hussar Cemetery Fund, Box 100, Hussar, AB T0J 1S0.
NAYLOR -- Dr. Bruce Gordon 1950 - 2007
It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. Bruce Gordon Naylor announce his passing at home early April 6, 2007 after a brief illness. Bruce will be dearly missed by his wife Judy, sons John (10) and Connor (8), mother Mary Lynn (Cliff) Rederburg, his brothers Scott (Kerri), Kent (Sharon), Jay (Sandy) and their families. Bruce was predeceased by his first wife Marlene in 1992 and his father John in 1987. Bruce was born in Midale, Saskatchewan in August 1950. The eldest of four boys, Bruce always had a thirst for knowledge and was a passionate reader of military and natural history. From a young age Bruce enjoyed creating with his hands and particularly loved working with wood and leather. Earning his BSc. with high honours from the University of Saskatchewan in 1972, Bruce went on to complete his PhD in Zoology in 1978 at the University of Alberta. Bruce’s crowning professional achievement was his position as Director of the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology which he held from 1992 until his death. Prior to this his list of professional accomplishments included Senator, Univ. of Calgary 1989-90; NSERC post-doct. fellowship, Univ. of Toronto 1978-80; Sess.. Lectr., Univ. of Calif., Berkley 1979; Asst. Prof. & NSERC Rsch. Fellow, Univ. of Alta. 1980-82; Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology, Tyrrell Museum 1982-86; Asst. Dir., Royal Tyrrell Museum1986-92. Of all Bruce’s accomplishments none were as dear to him as were his boys, whom he treasured with all his heart. Living with his family on his dream property, family walks, gardening, and many pets all contributed to a life well lived. The family is eternally grateful to the compassionate staff at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, who were able to provide Bruce with a diagnosis, which enabled him to face his illness with dignity. A celebration of Bruce’s life will be held at the Royal Tyrrell Museum on the 30th of April 2007 at 2 p.m.
ZIEGLER -- Martha 1920 - 2007
Martha Ziegler, our dear mother and grandmother passed away peacefully in the early morning of Good Friday, April 6, 2007 at the age of 87 years. Martha was born in Carbon, Alberta on February 10, 1920, the eldest of nine children. In her younger years she attended bible school and worked as a cook on a farm until marrying Reinhold Ziegler on July 30,1946. They raised five children in the Drumheller area. She was a very caring, loving and nurturing person. Devoting her life to her family and a dedicated member of the local church. Martha is absent from body but present with the Lord. We will remember her tender loving care, her smile and her generosity of spirit of love for her family.
Martha will be lovingly remembered by her children Harrey (Marilyn), David (Lillian), Twylia (Marvin), Lloyd (Raylene), James; grandchildren Rhonda (Dana), Joyce, Timothy (Jennifer), Ashley, Charleen, Stefanie, Darcy, Clayton, Cory, Jennifer, Bobbi, Reed (Christina), Andrew; great-grand children Kearra, Thalia, Cadence, Deron, Billie, Taylor; siblings Herbert, Shirley and Alice. Martha was predeceased by her parents Philip and Rosalee, her husband Reinhold as well as her siblings Gilbert, Albert, Chris, Freda, Rosie, daughter Lula and grandson Dylan. Funeral services for Martha will be held Saturday, April 14, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the Zion Baptist Church. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association. Allard -- Lyda
Lyda Allard (Looy) of Edmonton, AB, formerly of Coronation, AB, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away on April 5, 2004 in the Palliative Care Unit of Norwood Capital Care in Edmonton, AB. Lyda was born March 14, 1920 in Holland and immigrated to Canada with her parents in 1921.
Lyda will be fondly remembered by her two daughters, Jane (Ernie) Dupuis of Drumheller, AB and Jeannette (Terry) Footz of Edmonton, AB. Also mourning her loss are grandchildren Sheila (Ray) Bulbeck of Drumheller, AB, Cheryl (Peter) Murray of Calgary, AB, Wendy (Rob) Mahan of Calgary, AB, Chris Footz of Edmonton, AB, and Tim (Stacey) Footz of Edmonton, AB; as well as six great-grandsons, Michael and James Murray, Tyler and Jarrett Mahan, and Benjamin and Nathan Footz. Other family left to cherish her memory are brothers Cor (Lynette) Looy of Turner Valley, AB, Dick (Barb) Looy of Okotoks, AB, Gerrit (Hazel) Looy of High River, AB; and sister Agatha Turbak of Elkhorn, MB; as well as many caring nephews and nieces, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Francis in 1997; sister Jenny Glasier; brothers Mart and Floris Looy; and her parents Dick and Agatha Looy. Lyda, with her parents and family, farmed in the Veteran and Throne, AB areas until moving south of Coronation, AB in 1940 and married Francis Allard in 1941.
Lyda had a passion for life and approached every day with a positive outlook and faced all her challenges head on. She led the life of a very busy farm wife, mother, gardener, poultry raiser, cow milker, harvester, cook, canner, etc. With all her home produce and preserves, she served many bountiful meals to family and friends. She also enjoyed the harvest of the fields and could pitch bundles with the best of them! She wasn¹t afraid to drive the tractor or even tackle the combine. Although, very busy with farm life, she some how found time to enjoy special interests. Her main hobby and gifted talent was baking and decorating delicious sugar cookies - for each special holiday; Easter, Christmas, Halloween, etc. and decorating special cakes for birthdays, anniversaries, farewells, retirements and especially weddings. She created many beautiful masterpieces and often only had pictures or the "brides ideas" as guidelines. The cakes travelled to many areas of the province and Francis was the handiman in structural assembly and packaging. Lyda belonged to the Order of the Royal Purple and was the 'Honoured Royal Lady' for two terms during her membership, as well as holding many other positions and took great pride in holding a perfect attendance record for 24 years. She was also a member of the Legion Ladies' Auxiliary and volunteered for many other community activities - as the Farmer¹s Market, Coronation Fair Days, bowling bookkeeper, ceramics, church activities, etc. She enjoyed family camping trips, playing cards and games and was a beautiful knitter of afghans and dishcloths. She made friends easily and couldn't say 'no' to the many requests for helping with 'this job or that'. Following retirement to Coronation in 1979, Francis and Lyda travelled on many bus tours to all parts of Canada and the United States. They enjoyed the Ludwig bus rides and making many new friends from Drumheller on these trips. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 10, 2004 at the Trinity United Church in Cornation, AB with Rev. Mervyn Penfound officiating. A family burial followed at Coronation Cemetery. Lunch was served to family and friends at the Elks Hall by the Federal Friendship Club, members of the Royal Purple, and community friends. A very special thanks to these ladies, as well as pallbearers, Ray Bulbeck, Peter Murray, Rob Mahan, Chris Footz, Tim Footz and John Mac Gougan and the staff at the Parkview Funeral Chapel. The family also wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks for the special care given by the staff at the Norwood Palliative Care Unit and the Palliative Home Care Team in Edmonton, AB. AVRAMENKO -- Frances F. (nee Snyder) 1920 - 2005
Frances passed away peacefully at the age of 84 years in Continuing Care at the Drumheller Hospital on March 11, 2005 with her family at her side. She was born in Botha, Alberta on March 22, 1920 to Roy and Edith Snyder. She married William Avramenko in November of 1936 and moved to the Rowley area. Frances was predeceased by her husband William in 1993 and by two grandchildren, Anita Sinclair and Howard Jensen. She will be sadly missed by her six children, Marie Jensen, Darlene Sinclair (Robert), Leroy, Allen (Fe-Fe), Norley, and Carol Houghton (Nelson); by 13 grandchildren; by 31 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the Morrin Community Hall, with Harold Hunter officiating. Interment will follow at the Rowley Cemetery.. LAWRENCE -- Roy Logan 1918 - 2005
Roy Lawrence of Drumheller passed away in Drumheller Continuing Care on March 11, 2005 at the age of 86. Roy was born and raised on a farm in the Morrin area. He was very active and a life-time member of Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship. Roy was predeceased by his wife Gwen Lawrence in 1995. He married Evelyn (Schedel) in February 1996 at the Pioneer Centre and they continued to be very active members in pool, shuffleboard, and card games. Roy is survived by his wife Evelyn; son Jim (Carolynne) of Cochrane, AB; daughter Judy (Bruce) Little of Drumheller, AB; son Roy (Brenda) of Drumheller, AB; son Bill of Penhold, AB; daughter Bonnie Sanders of Calgary, AB; daughter Wendy (Ron) Stiles of Sylvan Lake, AB; and daughters-in-law, Sherry and Doreen. Roy had eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on March 19, 2005 at Elim Pentecostal Church with Pastor Lyle Carbert and Pastor Dan Dannhauer officiating. REZNECHENKO -- John 1927 - 2005
Our beloved husband, father and grandfather, John, passed away on March 11, 2005 at the Peter Lougheed Centre. John was born at Maple Creek, Saskatchewan on March 20, 1927. He was the youngest of eight children born to Mike and Mary Reznechenko. He married Maxine and became father to her four daughters. He is survived by Maxine, his wife of nearly 40 years; his daughter Sheree
(Jim) Gallant, and Holly, both of Calgary, Marliss (Roger) Fleischhacker of Middle Lake, SK and LeeAnne of Drumheller; his grandchildren Curtis and Brad Fleischhacker and Mallory Gallant; his sister Alice Ackerson of Tacoma, Washington; and his brother-in-law John Kobitz of Maple Creek, SK. John is also survived by Maxine¹s family, Pauline Best, Gordon (Doris) Best, and Helen (Bob) Murdock. John is also lovingly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. He is pre-deceased by his siblings Victoria, Anna (Tony), Helen (Joe), Paul (Lil), (Marvin Ackerson), Philip, Lloyd, and in-laws Ed Best, and Doug (Arlene) Best. After his family, his passions were vacuuming, caring for his yard and home, and meeting with his coffee buddies. He will be missed by all. TROUT -- Lyman Joseph 1947 - 2005
Lyman Jospeh Trout was born April 29, 1947 at Drumheller, AB. He was the 11th child of Frank and Erma Trout of the Byemoor/Delia area. He passed away in the Hanna Hospital on March 11, 2005. Lyman attended school at Majestic and Delia. He was employed by C.N.R. for 12 years as an Engine Watchman. It was his duty to fuel the diesel engines and make certain the units were ready for the rails. During that time he enjoyed working with the crew and a number of them became lifelong friends. On May 24, 1969 Lyman and Glenda Martin were married in a beautiful spring wedding. They were blessed with three children - Cheryl, Kevin and Corry. In 1978 Lyman left C.N.R. and the family moved to their farm south of Hanna. He enjoyed his family, his home and his farm. Lyman had a passion for hunting. He was always watching for that big buck! It seems that now we understand This country man who loved the land. Who woke each day with rising sun And fell asleep with work well done. Lyman will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his loving wife Glenda; his children Cheryl, Kevin and Corry of Hanna; his mother Erma Trout of Hanna Long Term Care; four brothers and seven sisters, Gwen (Roy) Unsworth of Hanna, Audrey (Harold) Kingcott of Hanna, Gloria and Bob Herzog of Delia, Glen and Wendy Trout of Rumsey, Rosemarie and Carl Nemetz of Stettler, Betty and Robert Ridley of Eureka River, AB Faith and Ted Crowle of Hanna, David and Barb Trout of Hanna, Darrell and Connie Trout of Delia, Marilyn and Bob Muhlbeier of Calgary, Tim and Dixie Trout of Wildwood, AB; Aunt Bev Swainston of Delia and Aunt Alberta Uttley of Stettler. He is also survived by a very large number of nieces and nephews and their families, as well as a number of cousins and their families. Also left to mourn his passing are Lyman¹s mother-in-law, Ann Martin of Hanna, and father-in-law, Oscar Martin of Hanna; brother-in-law and family Murray and Karen Martin - Elise, Heather and Jessica of Drumheller. Lyman was predeceased by his father Frank on August 30, 1987; sister Carolyn on August 30, 1991; brother Austin on May 21, 1993; brother Art on December 24, 1997; and by nephews Blaine Trout in August 1968, Gordon Ridley in March 1986, and Gary Trout on December 24, 1997. Also predeceased by his brothers-in-law Roy Unsworth in March 2001, Harold Kingcott on September 8, 2003, and sister-in-law Vicky Trout in December 2002. Jensen -- Glenys Mary 1922 - 2004
Glenys Mary Jensen (nee Price) passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of April 6, 2004. Glenys was born February 19, 1922 in Blaengwynfi, South Wales and came to Canada with her parents when she was seven years old. They settled in Wabamun where her father worked in the coal mines. When she finished school she went to Edmonton to find work and then joined her parents who had moved to Nacmine to find work. She worked at the egg grading station in Drumheller for awhile and then trained as a Certified Nurse's Aide in the Drumheller Hospital. Glenys married Arild Arnold Jensen on June 23, 1943 and after his stint in the Canadian Air Force during the war, they settled in on the Bragg Ranch in Dalum where they remained until retirement to Drumheller in 1993. Glenys is survived by her sons, Larry and Arild Jr. (Ann); daughter-in-law Marlene Jensen; grandchildren Parry (Leah) Jensen, Shawna (Joe) Castonguay, Kent (Nicole) Jensen, Jon Sheppard; great-grandchildren Cort Castonguay, Tenlee Jensen, Jadeon Sheppard and Connor Sheppard; brothers-in-law Herluf Jensen, Ove (Edie) Jensen; and sister-in-law Gerda (Folmer) Rasmussen; numerous nieces and nephews; and "Duffy". She was predeceased by her husband Arild Jensen, her parents William and Ellen Price, sister-in-law Marie Jensen, and grandson James Sheppard. Funeral services were held for Glenys at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Dalum on Thursday, April 8, 2004 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Dan Hendrickson and Pastor Wayne McCracken officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Continuing Care Unit of the Drumheller Hospital for patient enrichment or the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Dalum Memorial Fund. Appleyard -- George 1916 - 2004
George Appleyard, husband, father, uncle, grand-father, and great grand-father passed away April 16, 2004 at the age of 88 years in the Three Hills Hospital. He leaves to mourn his wife, Irene, his daughters, Sheri (Tim) Larsen, and Sandy Gebbie, his sons, Don Appleyard, and Doug (Beth) Appleyard, his daughter- in law, Sharon Appleyard, sisters-in-law, Simone Appleyard and Audrey Appleyard, grandchildren Troy (Rachelle) Appleyard, Jacqueline, Tyler, and Sheldon Appleyard, Brandi Godfrex, Austin, Brandon and Stephanie Larsen, and great grandchild Kenzie. Numerous nieces and nephews will miss George very much. He was predeceased by his first wife Patricia, his son Ian, his daughter -in law, Judy, and his grandson, Dana and his brothers, Jack, Joe, and Richard. George was born in the Carbon are and spent his entire life farming. He was a Commissioner at the Royal Tyrell Museum in Drumheller where he was honoured and admired by all. He truly enjoyed contributing to the Legion and the community, which he loved. A Mass of Christian Burial was held, Tuesday April 20, 2004 at 10.A.M. in St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Drumheller with Father Ian Gagne officiating. A luncheon was held at the Carbon Community Hall immediately following the service. Burial was held at St. Mary's Cemetery in Calgary. Donations may be made to the Legion Poppy Fund or donor¹s choice. Arrangements were entrusted to Courtney-Winter's Funeral Chapel.
Blake -- Douglas James
Douglas James Blake, WWII RCAF veteran and 40 year member of the Royal Canadian Legion, passed away Sunday, April 11, 2004. He was predeceased by his loving wife Anne. Doug is survived by his daughter Lynn Phillips (Ron Stuart) of Vancouver; his sister Anne Sled of Parksville; grandson Joel Phillips of North Vancouver; and nephews Greg Sled (Eileen) of Parksville and Scott (Paula) Sled of Nanaimo. Doug will also be lovingly remembered by "The Beach Family" who were so very dear to him, Mrs. Hannelore Beach of Innisfail, her daughters Bettina (Kelvin) McGillivray of
Innisfail and Krista (Jeff) Loesch of Lacombe and also her son Gordon (Lynda Fraser) of Calgary. Peacock -- Lauretta Hayes April 15, 1907 - February 15, 2005
With great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved sister and aunt, Lauretta Peacock, in Medicine Hat, Alberta on February 15, 2005 at the age of 97. Lauretta was predeceased by her mother and father, Della and Ernest Peacock, her aunt Alice Hayes, her brother-in-law Clarence Wilson, her sister and brother-in-law Frances and Lawrence Morton, and her nephew Harold Wilson. She will be greatly missed by her loving sister, Gladys Wilson and her nephew Frank (Eunice) Wilson, her nieces Darlene (Chuck) Schmaltz, Barbara (Leo) Pagé, Brenda Thomas, Laverne Foran, Anita (Rob) Tetz, nephews Merle (Irene) Morton, Larry Morton, Murray (Diane) Morton, plus numerous great nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on February 22, 2005 at 2 p.m. from the Delia United Church with Reverend Travis Cannaday officating. A private family burial was held at the Delia Cemetery. Zachariassen -- Raymond W. 1921 - 2005
Ray Zachariassen of Rosebud, AB, beloved husband of Phyllis, passed away March 4, 2005, in Strathmore Hospital after a brief struggle with lung cancer. Ray was loved and respected, and will be remembered always, by his five children, their spouses and his six grandchildren -- Donna, Calgary; Roy, Laurie, Kayla and Courtney, Chestermere; Richard and Helen, Rosebud; Judy, John and Matthew (McKee), Calgary; and Linda, Andy, Daniel, Sara and Liam (Wong), Yellowknife. Ray will also be lovingly remembered by his sister, Ruth Colbert, Hanna; his sister-in-law, Rose Edgar, Innisfail; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wayne and Iris Dresser, Carbon; his many nieces and nephews; and family in Norway. Friends and neighbours, especially those in the 'coffee club', will miss his presence. Ray was born November 1, 1921 in Youngstown, AB, the fourth child of Erik and Ingeborg Zachariassen, Norwegian immigrants. He grew up in Stanmore, AB,and, in 1944, moved west to work in the Carbon/Rockyford area, where he also enjoyed playing on the local baseball and hockey teams. Ray and Phyllis (nee Dresser) were married February 3, 1950, and started farming in the Redland/Rosebud area. Ray was active in the local Lions Club, and enjoyed curling and golf. In 1977, Ray was elected as a councillor in the County of Wheatland No. 16. He served on council for 15 years, three of them as reeve. Ray retired as a councillor in 1992, but never retired from farming - he helped Richard with the harvest in the fall of 2004. Ray was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Chris and Harry Price, Red Deer; his brother, Hans Zachariassen, Hanna; and his brothers-in-law, Mac Colbert, Hanna, and Bill Edgar, Innisfail. Ray's family would like to thank the doctors and nurses who cared for him during his illness - the staff at the Peter Lougheed Centre; the staff at the Foothills Medical Centre in Emergency and on Unit 37; and the staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, especially Meina. Thank you to Dr. Fanning and to the staff at the Strathmore Hospital - the nurses, especially, whose skill and kindness in caring for Ray, and his family, are so appreciated.
