Robert Michels, of Lloydminster, AB/SK

MICHELS: Robert Michels better known as Bob immigrated from Gemert, Holland by boat in his early teens. It took him seven days by boat to reach Halifax. He went from there to stay with his brother Jack and sister-in-law Dora in Oshawa, Ontario for a while, then went to Elbow, SK to stay with his sister Mies and brother-in-law Martin, from there he went to Weyburn, SK.
He began working for the CNR as he could NOT speak English too well. He had his mechanic papers, but he had to learn English before he could work as a mechanic. He later joined the Weyburn Racing club. Bob was known as the Flying Dutchman car 225. It was there that he met Janet Tremblay of Radville, SK, who he later married.
They moved to Lloydminster in 1966 with their two children, Donald was 10 and Donna was 3 months old.
Bob worked for Ted Steeg at Datsun Sales for many years. Bob and Janet then went for the country life. They bought land from Laurence Christensen, put up a tent and lived in it until it got too cold, then they got a little old cabin from Ted Steeg to live in. They saved until they could afford to put power and dig a well. There was a few hard times, but good, happy times as well. In 1979 Bob started to work for Mobil Oil as a Senior Repairman.
Bob loved his country music. He loved to play his guitar, and George Jones was his favourite country singer. Bob got to meet George and shake hands with him two years ago. That day he forgot about his pain and cancer, and had to tell the world that he met George Jones. But for Bob the greatest highlight of his life was when he and Janet won a trip to Holland so he could get to see his dear Mom and relatives, as he only has a sister and her family here in Canada, the rest are all in Holland.
Bob was always a hard worker, a good husband and a great father. He always had time for his children and later on his grandson Brandon. He would make time to go camping and fishing with his children and grandson. Bob always had a little joke to tell.
Don and Donna went to school in Kitscoty. When Mobil downsized Bob went to work at Boundary Ford as a mechanic then an R.V. Technician and was there until he could not work because of his cancer.
Bob had a love for nature, and was very fond of his animals. He raised miniature horses and was a member of the Fur & Feather club for many years. Their farm was called Border Star Bunny and Bird Lodge and they raised, showed and sold many different birds and animals. They made many friends by travelling here and there to shows.
Bob found it very hard to give up his miniature horses and his dog Buddy, but he still had a smile and a joke for his friends and family. He always said “Janet, we’re lucky to have such good neighbors and friends,” and I know he’ll be missed a lot.
The funeral service for Bob Michels was conducted from the McCaw Funeral Chapel, Lloydminster, Alberta on Friday, September 24, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Norm Laird officiating.
