Herman Nelson, of Lloydminster
NELSON: Herman, June 25, 1927 - January 29, 2005.
The harvest is in; the sunset has come, It’s time to rest Dad - your chores are all done...
Dad was born in Lashburn, Sask. The only child of Nels and Gerda Nelson. He grew up and spent most of his life on the family farm north of Maidstone.
He attended Milleton school, and after worked on the farm. As a young boy, he loved sports and also took an active part in the school plays and musicals. He spent a couple of winters in northern BC working in a lumbermill, but returned home to work the farm after his father passed away in 1952.
He loved all sports, but his favorite was fastball. He spent many years traveling with his buddies and playing ball. He often spoke of the guys and all the good times they had not only playing the game, but also with the pre-game and post-game activities! He was a member of the Dry Gully team and later the Maidstone Merchants. Dad’s winters were busy too. In his younger days he was an active member of the Milleton Curling Club and loved to go to bonspiels. He also loved the game of hockey; he could be found at the rink watching any age of hockey, any kind of hockey, and usually standing in the same spot! Dad was a big Montreal Expos fan and also had the “Rider Pride”. No matter whether he participated, watched the live action or watched on TV, Dad’s day usually included sports of some kind.
He met Wilma Gordon who had came to Maidstone to work at the hospital, and they were married in November 1954. Together they had four daughters: Patsy, Lorna, Janice and Beverly. Both he and mom worked hard on the farm, and were active members in our community. They were good neighbors and friends to all and pitched in to help whenever the need arose. Their farm life continued until 1975, when Dad sold the farm to the Oddan family - Misty Valley Farms. We loaded up the truck and moved to Lloydminster. This was a big change for all and took some getting used to. Both Mom and Dad went to work for “someone else” and settled into city life. Dad tried his hand at a few things and then went to work for Ed King Husky where he stayed until he retired in 1992. Dad also continued to return to the farm - to help out however and whenever he could. In his heart he truly never left that place.
His family grew up and the grandchildren came. He enjoyed them all and was a proud pappa. A few years after Mom passed away, Dad downsized, and he and his companion Verna moved into a smaller house. The last few years saw Dad to be very content to be at home. He loved to putter around the yard and house, and he spent countless hours manicuring his lawn making sure that everything was just so. He had the nicest grass on the block, and took great pride in keeping it that way! He also enjoyed reading, watching TV and he usually made a trip uptown every day to get that 1 or 2 items he had forgotten the day before!
He was a man of great pride and dignity, and was always there to lend a hand. He was a true advocate of the “underdog” and frowned on the greedy and those who took the chance to better themselves at someone else’s expense. He befriended most, and judged very few. He was a great story teller, and loved to reminisce about the “good old days” - always with a humorous touch! His laugh was unique and contagious. He was very proud of his girls and his grandchildren, and while the words were few, the feelings were many. Dad was a kind and gentle soul with a heart of gold.
In keeping with Dad’s wishes, no formal funeral was held. Cremation has taken place, and his ashes will be placed beside Mom in the Maidstone Cemetery at a later date.
He is loved and will always be remembered by: three daughters: Patsy, Janice (Mick) and Beverly (Leon); six grandchildren: Kaley Nelson, Jeremy, Adrian and Brendan Price-Jones, and Renae and Kyle Roberge. His friend and companion Verna Presley and her family, one Aunt Stella Sinclair, several cousins, many friends and neighbors.
He was predeceased by an infant daughter Lorna and his wife Wilma.
