ELLENWOOD
Roderick Raymond Ellenwood
July 31, 1905 - June 7, 2002
Rod Ellenwood of Red Deer passed away at Davenport Cottage in east Red Deer at the age of 96 years, 10 months. For 96 years and 5 months, Rod was vibrant, energetic, interested in Liberal politics and very tuned in to the health and welfare of his many relatives, but after breaking his hip in December his age caught up to him. Rod was born on the family farm (Sansmere) in the Waskasoo district west of town. He attended Waskasoo School and Red Deer High School before turning to farming. He worked with his father until 1958, then alone, assisted by the Good brothers until 1976 when he sold the farm to his nephew Larry and retired to live in Red Deer. "Uncle Rod", as all his nieces and nephews referred to him, continued to live in his own little house by the Red Deer River, maintaining his yard and garden, checking river levels for the Environment Dept., and keeping contact with his friends and family in fine fashion. At age 93 he decided the "Old Folks Home" was in order and moved to Pines Lodge. His hearing "handicap" was the only impediment to a fine social life there, but Rod still had his "business" to look after, his walks, and the Globe & Mail to stimulate him. At 96 he moved to the nursing home, and the rest is history. Memories of his travels to Nova Scotia, New York, Mexico, Australia, Texas, etc. both photographic and written, reminded him of the impact he had on those who had contact with him. He will be missed and forever remembered as everybody's favorite uncle. Rod is survived by his sisters-in-law, Mary Ellenwood of Cold Lake and Mary Ellenwood of Phoenix, and too many nieces and nephews to mention. He was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters. Appreciation of his kindness, generosity and spirit will never diminish & recollections of his fine 80th and 90th birthday celebrations, as well as his attendance at numerous weddings and reunions will bring smiles to us all. To pay our respects to his youthful spirit and to Mingle our Memories, a gathering of his friends for a celebration of "Hot Rod's" life will take place at Knox Presbyterian Church in Red Deer at 2:00 PM, Friday, June 14, 2002.
