Marjorie Belle Bower (nee Smith) formerly of Medicine Hat, passed away at home on July 14, 2004. Marjorie was the last surviving member of the RB and Belle Smith family; predeceased by her parents, and sisters, Betty and Roberta. She was also predeceased by her son Frank "Bus" Bower in June 1973. She excelled at all accomplishments, and was awarded the Governor General Medal during high school for her scholastic accomplishments. She attended the University of Alberta, majoring in Chemistry on a full scholarship, before the war broke out. During the war years, she worked as a lathe operator and inspector in Sorrel, Quebec, returning to Alberta after the war, to work as a journalist reporting for the Medicine Hat News, Calgary Albertan and the Red Deer Advocate. Marjorie covered a full page of Red Deer news in the Calgary Albertan, and she was a very factual reporter. She was offered a position of assistant editor with the Southern chain, but she chose to marry Don Bower of Red Deer, on August 18, 1951 instead. Marj is survived by her husband, Don Bower; her three daughters and grandchildren, Robyn Reid, Cleary, Lyndon and Patrick Reid of Red Deer; Margot (David) Poole, and Kris and Steven of Red Deer, Gail Bower of Edmonton. Sister-in-laws Dorothy and Ruth Bower of Red Deer. Marj enjoyed square and round dancing, curling and traveling. She traveled extensively throughout Canada and the United States with their Arabian Horses. Marjorie made friends from all walks of life in her travels. Marj was a tremendous wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was a very private person, who lived her faith, and maintained her cheery disposition throughout her six year battle with cancer and its aftermath. She was a very classy lady who treated all who she met with grace, kindness and caring. She had tremendous love for her family. A very special thank you for the family especially to Nora for the many hours and days she stayed with Marjorie, through good times and crises situations. Also a special thank you to Fay, Marion, Jytte, and others. To the staff and Doctors at the Foothill Hospital and the Red Deer Hospital for their special caring. And a very, very appreciative thank you to Rev. Yoos for the graveside service. "You certainly got to know her John." So long to a very courageous lady that lived her faith everyday of her life. Until we meet again. A celebration of Marj's life will be announced at a later date. COBB, George George Cobb of Red Deer passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at the age of 82 years. George will be lovingly remembered by one son, Gerald Cobb of St. Albert, one step-son, Roderick Danhauer of Strathmore, one daughter, Loisann Green of Surrey, British Columbia, one brother, Walter Cobb of Winnipeg, one sister, Ette Troutin of Niagara, two grandchildren, and four step-grandchildren. George was predeceased by his wife of 32 years, Charlotte. George retired after twenty-five years with the A.L.C.B., having worked in Red Deer, Hinton, Wainwright, and Edmonton. During retirement he enjoyed twenty-one winters as a snowbird in Mesa, Arizona. George spent many enjoyable hours curling in the winter and golfing in the summer. George was taught the sport of curling by Ken Watson. One of George's greatest pleasures was baking and feeding it to others. A gathering to celebrate George's life will be held at the Red Deer Funeral Home (6150 - 67 Street) on Friday, July 23, 2004 at 7:00 p.m.

Chester William Forcht passed away at the Lacombe Hospital and Care Centre on July 23, 2004 at the age of 85 years. Chester was born at Clive, Alberta January 27, 1919 and farmed in the Clive area with his father. The high-lite of his life was taking trips to Hawaii. He spent all of his life in the Lacombe district. Predeceased by his parents, Chester is survived by companion, Edna of Lacombe and numerous cousins. Mr. John Delbert 'Jack' Gummow of Red Deer, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Red Deer Nursing Home on Thursday, July 22, 2004 at the age of 87 years. Jack was born on December 5, 1916 at Regina, Saskatchewan. After losing his father at the early age of three, Jack was raised by his mother and his step-father. They lived in the Springvale area until 1939. Jack married his wife, Sylvia on April 11, 1939. In 1942, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served his country in World War II. After the war, Jack settled in the Penhold Community where he continued to live until his passing. He spent many years driving truck hauling cattle and grain. After that, Jack worked for Fletchers Packers for another number of years. Jack was very involved in and around the Penhold Community and for a time he served as President of the Sportsman's Club and was a member of the Lions Club. In his spare time, Jack was caretaker of the outdoor skating rink and he also enjoyed driving Lions Seniors Bus in his retirement years, taking them on outings when he was eighty years old. Jack will be remembered as a very kind, generous and gentle man who spent much of his life devoting himself and his time to helping others and his community. Jack will be very sadly missed but lovingly remembered and cherished in the hearts of his family and friends. Jack leaves to mourn his loss, his loving daughter, Yvonne and her husband, David Pyper of Cambridge, Ontario, his grandchildren; Jim, Trina, Rod, Darcy, Charlene, Kevin and David and his great grandchildren, Jordan, Billie and Michael. Jack was predeceased by his beloved wife, Sylvia in 1998, an older brother, Malcolm and a son, Gerald. Doris leaves to mourn her loss, her loving children, daughters, Marjorie (Charlie) Campbell and Donna (Emil) Lajeunesse, both of Red Deer and her son, Ken (Lorrene) Johnson of Smiley, Saskatchewan, eleven grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. James John Malainey passed away on July 19th, 2004 at the age of 60 years. He is survived by his son, Darren (Kendra) Malainey, daughter, Debi (Steve) Dulyk as well as seven grandchildren; Alexis, Cassie, Rylan, Dallan, James, Devan and Stephenie. He is also survived by his mother Lena, two sisters, Liz and Olga, and brother, Adam James is also predeceased by his father Jack Malainey. James was born in Spirit River, grew up on the farm and schooled in the area. He was a bricklayer by trade for most of his working life. MILLER Mrs. Myrtle Alice Miller of Lacombe passed away at the Lacombe Hospital and Care Centre on July 27, 2004 at the age of 97 years. Myrtle was born November 25, 1906 to Emil and Lydia Erickson in Ward County, Aurelia, N.D. She immigrated with her family to Canada in 1914 and settled on their fathers homestead east of Lac La Biche. She was united in marriage to Leon Miller at Lac La Biche November 16, 1927. From 1941 until their retirement in 1957 they operated Miller's Market Garden on the Blindman River south of Blackfalds. Predeceased by her husband Leon, son Ervin, brothers Charlie, Roy, Emil, Leslie, and sisters Clara Wilder "Nettie" Miller, and Pearl Roux she is survived by one daughter Evelyn, three granddaughters, Jayne, Judy and Joanne Gilmar and two great granddaughters, one brother Herbert, one sister Stella, as well as several nieces and nephews. PERRY, John Kingsley
John Kingsley "King" Perry of Calgary passed away at the Foothills Hospital on Thursday, July 22, 2004 at the age of 89 years. King was born on November 16, 1914 on the farm at Balzac, the eldest son of pioneers, Clem and Lucy Perry. His farming background saw him take a job as a grain buyer in Carstairs from 1938 to 1941 where he met his wife, Beatrice Wight. In 1941 he joined the RCAF and graduated as a pilot, #10 SFTS Dauphin, Manitoba and was immediately posted overseas. He returned as a staff pilot to Rivers, Manitoba in 1942, and was later posted to Edmonton. He flew in Northern Canada under the late "Wop" May in Search and Rescue with Canadian Airways, which sparked his lifelong love for the Norseman Aircraft. In 1945 he joined the management of Massey Ferguson and thereafter started his own farm implements dealership in Blackie and subsequently in Red Deer. King was an active community member and his service included, being past President of the Chambers of Commerce in Blackie and in Red Deer; a Red Deer Airport Commissioner for six years; past President of 703 Wing Red Deer RCAF Association; a life Member of the Red Deer Elks and of the Red Deer Lodge #85 I.O.O.F. He was married to Lois Rosenberger in 1977. Upon moving to Calgary he became a volunteer at the Aero Space Museum Association and was an active member of the Air Crew Association of Calgary. In his retirement King travelled extensively and made such trips as his round-the-world trip by freighter. During one of his cruises, he discovered his talent for painting. King lived a long and active life. He was dedicated to his family, his church, and he felt it was important to keep in touch and maintain his friendship with the many people he met over the years. One particularly close friend was Andy Anderson, whom he met in 1941 at the RCAF Pilot School and he maintained that friendship until Andy's passing just over a month ago. King had the ability to recall and relate stories of his past experiences and those of others in a way that could hold your attention for hours. King will be lovingly remembered by his son, Bill Perry and his wife Gay (nee Light) of Salt Springs Island formerly of Sylvan Lake, his grandson Craig (Lisette) Allan of Calgary, his four great-grandchildren; Brendan and Thea Allan, Beau Gaebel, and Paris James; his brother, Leighton (Mary) Perry of Calgary and sister-in-law Dorothy Perry of Balzac; his nieces and nephews, Janet (Nick) Warner of Dogpound, Marilee Minhinnet of Balzac, Neil (Lori) Perry of Balzac, Phil (Starr) Perry of Newport Beach, Ca, Sherree (Joe) Sadee of Sherwood Park, Bryan (Jeanne) Hergert of Leduc, Barry (Terry) Brookman of Forestburg and Doug Ardiel of Edmonton; his three step-daughters, Susan Breckenridge of Edmonton, Wendy (Allan) Sharp of Calgary, Beth (Dale) Massie of Calgary; four step-grandchildren; Kim Brown, Shannon Massie, Lisa Dillabaugh, Brent Dillabaugh,. King was predeceased by his two loving wives; Beatrice in 1961 (who was the mother of Bill and Brenda) and Lois in 1995, his sister, Brenda Perry in 1912, his daughter, Brenda Allan in 1984, his brother, Redvers Perry in 2003, and his granddaughter, Lisa Allan in 2003. A private family service will be held at St. Clements Anglican Church in Balzac, with Reverend Eric Haffenden officiating. PROCKIW, Pamela Glynn
Pamela Glynn Prockiw passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital on Sunday, July 25, 2004 after a brief illness. Pam was born and raised in the Pine Lake area. She met her husband Joseph when he was stationed in Penhold, AB with the RCAF. They moved to Winnipeg after the war, then, settled in Edmonton. In 1994, Pam and Joe joined their son Bob and daughter-in-law at their home in the country. Family and friends were recipients of Pam's great love of cooking, and her generous hospitality. She was a gracious woman and enriched the lives of everyone who knew her. Pam was predeceased by her parents, Nancy and Laurie May and her husband Joseph. She is survived by her son, Robert (Linda) Prockiw, daughters, Linda (Richard) ) Ozolins, and Nancy Prockiw (Paul), her grandchildren, Krista Prockiw and Alex Ozolins, and sister Betty Howell and family.
