WOWK, Gary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gary M. Wowk on August 24, 2004 at the age of 51 years, after a courageous battle with MS and cancer. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 25 years, Cheryl, and his two sons, Brennen and Logan. Also, sharing his memories are his parents Morris and Doris Wowk of Red Deer, sister Sherolyn Dandurand and her children Ryan and Elise of Calgary, his brother-in-law Frank Kosa of Lumbey, B. C. and his daughters Elan and Andrea of Calgary, his father-in-law Bert Kuffner of Red Deer, and his brother-in-law Gary Kuffner and wife Gloria of Ottawa. Gary was predeceased by his sister Valerie Kosa and mother-in-law Loretta Kuffner. Gary was born in Lestock, Saskatchewan on August 23, l953. He grew up in Leross and later, Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan. His education began in Leross and continued on to Luther College in Regina, University of Regina and Universite de Sherbrooke in Quebec. Gary began working in London, Ontario, then Lethbridge and finally Red Deer where he enjoyed his career first as Finance Manager at Kipp Scott Pontiac Buick, and then as General Manager at Gord Scott Nissan where he thoroughly enjoyed working with the staff and customers. After his retirement, Gary was actively involved in the community volunteering for the Festival of Trees, the MS society, the Healing and Hope Campaign, and the Future Stars organization supporting at-risk youth. Gary's first priority was his family with whom he shared his love of the outdoors, particularly lakes where he enjoyed boating and water skiing. This enjoyment will be continued through his sons Brennen and Logan. Gary lived his life to the fullest and was an inspiration to all who knew him. Gary's dynamic personality, sense of humour, and kind heart garnered an extended family of many dear friends whose generosity truly overwhelmed his family throughout his illness. Gary's life will be celebrated by Reverend Bill Foged and family and friends during a ceremony at Eventide Funeral Chapel at 4820 45 Street in Red Deer at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, August 30. Following the service there will be a reception at the Royal Canadian Legion, 2810 Bremner Avenue, Red Deer. If desired, donations in lieu of flowers can be made in Gary's honour to the Canadian Cancer Society or the SPCA. Arrangements c/o Eventide Funeral Chapel, telephone 347-2222.

HUBER, Eleonore Ida (nee Maschke)

It is with sadness that the family of Eleonore Huber announces her passing at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre in the early morning hours on Sunday, April 23, 2006 shortly into her 84th year.

Eleonore was born on March 7, 1922 at Edmonton, Alberta and spent her early years on the family homestead at Keephills, Alberta. After their marriage, during the war years, Eleonore and John resided in Calgary, then a homestead at South Athabasca, then Stony Plain, then back to Athabasca and then on to Fort McMurray. Upon John’s retirement in 1986, they moved to Lacombe, where Eleonore continued to reside until her death.

Eleonore leaves to mourn her loss, her daughters; Jeanette (Dennis) Truber of New Westminster, British Columbia and their children; Mona (Dean), Ryan (Carrie) and David, Grovenore (Jerry) Flato of Lacombe and their children; Janelle and Jahred and Orline (Jim) Myers and their children; Crystal (Shawn) and Chad (Angie) and granddaughter, Brenda (Art) Szkotak, as well as seven great- grandchildren.

Eleonore was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Joseph ‘John’ in 1991, a daughter, Shannon Turner in 1988, a granddaughter, Angeline Flato in 1996, a brother, Magnus Maschke in 1991 and an infant brother.

A Memorial Service was held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 4521 – 46 Street, Lacombe, Alberta on Saturday, April 29, 2006 at 5:00 p.m. A Private Family Interment was held at the Keephills Cemetery, Keephills, Alberta, when the ashes of Eleonore and her husband, John Huber will be laid to rest together. Cremation entrusted to the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta. In place of flowers, if desired, memorial donations in Eleonore’s honour may be made directly to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 101, 5208 - 53 Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta, T4N 5K2.

ROTH, Ella

Ella M. Roth (Wuschke) of Lacombe, formerly of Blackfalds passed away on April 13, 2006 after a lengthy illness.

Ella will be lovingly remembered by her family, husband Mike of 58 years; daughters Judy (Orvin) Bossert and Joan Bollinger; 5 grandsons, two granddaughters and seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ella was predeceased by her parents, Edward and Annie Wuschke, brother Arthur, sisters Ida and Alma and her son-in-law Brian Bollinger.

A Memorial Service was held at the Blackfalds United Church, 4707 Broadway Ave., Blackfalds, AB on Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers a memorial donation in Ella’s memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, #6, 5015 – 48th St., Red Deer, AB T4N 1S9. Those wishing to send flowers, please ensure that the flowers are silk, due to family allergies.

LAW, Jean Russell (nee Allen)
March 13, 1908 - April 28, 2006

Jean R. Law passed away quietly on Friday, April 28, 2006 following a short illness at Capital Care Lynnwood, Edmonton, Alberta.

Jean will be sadly missed by family and friends. She leaves to mourn her loving daughter Margaret Friedman and son, Allen both of Edmonton, brother George (Rita), nieces; Sharon (Errol) and family, Maureen (Blaine) and family, and nephew Douglas Allen and many nieces and nephews in Alberta and B.C., Ontario and Ireland.

She was predeceased by her parents May and George Allen, husband Cecil and son-in-law Dr. Morris H.W. Friedman.

Born in Old Strathcona, Alberta, Jean spent her childhood in Edmonton and area, Norfolk, Virginia, U.S., later moving to the Clive area. She married Cecil M. Law and the couple farmed in the Clive area for 65 years. Jean was an active member of the Clive community. She was a member of the Clive United Church and WA for many years. She loved music, was a fine pianist, loved literature and a very fine horse. Jean and Cecil traveled extensively - Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, U.S. and Canada.

Funeral Services were held on Friday, May 5, 2006 at St. Andrew’s United Church 5226 - 51 Ave. Lacombe, AB at 1:30 p.m. Interment followed in the Lacombe Fairview Cemetery. A reception followed at St. Andrew’s United Church Auditorium. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (Alta/NWT) Edmonton, #700, First Edmonton Place, 10665, Jasper Ave. Edmonton, AB T5J 3S9, phone 780-452-1166, or to the charity of your choice. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to wfch@telusplanet.net (subject Law).

A special thank you to the caring staff of 4th Parker, Capital Care "Lynnwood", Edmonton, AB and to Dragica Wolch and staff, Reliable Health Service Inc. for their kindness and devotion during Jean’s final days.

ROSE, Margaret

Margaret A.E. Rose of Lacombe passed away peacefully at the Lacombe Hospital and Care Centre on April 13, 2004 at the age of 66 years.

Margaret will be lovingly remembered by her two sons; Don (Sheri) Rose of Lousana, David Rose of Rocky Mountain House, and her soon to be expected grandchild of Don and Sheri. She will also be remembered by her one brother, Lynn (Chris) Suelzle of Medicine Hat, two sisters; Eunice (Carson) Wiesbeck of Summerland, British Columbia, and Evelyn Lumsden of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. Margaret was predeceased by her parents, Emil and Grace Suelzle.

A memorial service will be held at College Heights Seventh-day Adventist Church at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 22, 2004. Memorial tributes may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society (Central Region) 4730A Ross Street, Red Deer, Alberta, T4N 1X2 or to the Lacombe Palliative Care Society, Box 5576, Lacombe Alberta, T4L 1X2.

The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Palliative Care for their compassionate care. Also the visits from the many friends and family were very appreciated.

EPPLE, Robert Bruce

Robert Bruce Epple (Papa Bruce) passed away on April 16, 2004 suddenly at the age of 55 years.

Bruce was born in Tilsonberg, Ontario in 1948. He was married to Rita (Bajema) in 1972 and they moved to the Lacombe area in 1976. Bruce was a caring, loving man. He always had a smile on his face and pocket full of candies for his grand-kids.

Bruce is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Rita, and will be deeply missed by his children and grandchildren; Tara (Shayne) Silverfox, McKenzie, Dawson and Brady; Bob Epple and his children Kelsey Jackson and Haylee; Scott (Jil) Epple and their children Austin and Noah; Maralyn Epple and her fiance Josh Thompson. Bruce also leaves three brothers; Bill, Ed and Mike; two sisters; Marlain Epple and Barbra Wiebe, his mother-in-law, Gertrude Bajema, numerous brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.

Bruce was predeceased by his parents, one brother and sister.

Papa Bruce left a lasting impression on every person he met. He will be sadly missed by all. A celebration of Bruce’s life was held at Woodynook Christian Reformed Church on Wednesday, April 21 at 2:00 p.m. Donations may be made to the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation, 101 - 5208 - 53 Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta T4N 5K2.

SMYTH, Marrilla Jane

Marrilla Jane Smyth passed away on April 20, 2004 in Lacombe at the age of 93, to join her beloved husband Arthur.

She was born on December 15, 1910 at Lynhurst, Ontario. She married Arthur December 24, 1928 in which this union blessed them with three children. They farmed in Henribourg, Saskatchewan, then resided in Ontario, B.C. and spent remaining years in Alberta. She leaves behind one very devoted daughter who was also her best friend, Peggy Chretien who took care of her for 30 years faithfully. Son-in-law George who was always there, two grandchildren; Lori Chretien (Darius Hofer) and Crystal Witts (Quentin Witts) and six great-grandchildren; Joshua, Tiffany, Sara, Misty, Molly and Summer who all knew her as Nanny.

Nanny was our mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, confidant and a friend to us all. She was known for her sense of humor, drawings and treasured for story telling and songs. We enjoyed our afternoons with her having tea while she shared years of memories with us. She will be fondly remembered for her open arms, kindness, compassion and fun loving nature. She liked to give advice and care, yet at the same time make jokes and laugh. We will sadly miss her and there will always be some emptiness, however, that will be filled knowing in our hearts that she is so happy to have been reunited with her husband and family.

She was predeceased by her true love Arthur, baby Lawrence and Raymond, as well as her parents Wayne and Annie Conant, brothers Ralph, Azel and sisters Iona and Etna.

In celebration of Mom’s life, a service was held on Monday, April 26, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at Wilson’s Funeral Chapel, Lacombe followed by the burial at Alto Reste Memorial Gardens in Red Deer. If friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

BRITSKY, Leon

Mr. Leon Britsky passed away on April 21, 2004. He was born July 7, 1923, the fifth child of Mary and John Britsky at Ethelbert, Manitoba.

Leon and Doris were married and farmed at Ochre River, Manitoba from 1946 - 1972, then moved to Winnipeg to operate a corner store. They moved to Alberta in 1981 and built their house in Lacombe and worked for Ed VanderVellen as a plumber’s helper. Doris and Leon then purchased D & L Grocery in Clive, Alberta and operated it from 1984 - 1992.

Predeceased by his parents, brothers Nick and Walter, also sisters Anne, Isabel and Allie, he is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Doris of Lacombe, sons; Jack (Debbie) of Selkirk, Manitoba and their three children, Rae and two children of Ochre River, Manitoba, Don (Debbie) of Calgary and their two children, daughter Darlene (Merrill) Sizer of Red Deer and their two children, sister Jean (Sam) Krawec of Abbotsford, B.C. and brother Mike of Pickering, Ontario.

Funeral Services were held from Wilson’s Funeral Chapel, Lacombe on Saturday, April 24, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. Interment followed in the Lacombe Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer Association of Alberta #218A, 2323 - 32 Avenue N.E. Calgary, Alberta T2E 6Z3.

BARNES

John Lamont (Jack) Barnes of Elnora passed away on Saturday, June 2, 2007 at the age of 69 years. Jack lived his life in the Elnora area. He worked at numerous jobs including driving trucks, seismic and oil rigs as well as attending Olds College. Jack married Sharon Walton on Nov. 20, 1959 and together they began their life on the farm. Jack farmed with his brother Alan for many years. When Pat and Kathy were young, Jack was very involved in their 4-H club and gymkanas. His life was centered on his family and the farm with a true dedication to the care of his animals and the land, which he has instilled in his children and grandchildren. In 2005, Jack and Sharon realized their dream of retiring and moved east of Elnora. He loved all that their new place had to offer. Jack touched the lives of many people with his quiet dignity, generosity and strong work ethic. He truly enjoyed the cowboy way of life. Jack will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 471/2 years Sharon; daughter Pat (John) Christensen; daughter, Kathy (Dean) Tucker and four very special grandchildren; Shane (Bev) Christensen, Brad Christensen (Chelsey Szakaly), Austin Pisko (Shayleen Marek) and Hannah Tucker and his great grandson, Chase Christensen, all of whom were the light in his life. Jack is also survived by his sisters and brother, Dorothy and Bob Empey, Helen Neufeld, Alan and Irma Barnes, Kay Gall, Jean and Glen Ferguson, and numerous nieces and nephews and a host of good friends. He was predeceased by his parents C.A. (John) and Katherine Barnes and one nephew Alan Empey. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Elnora Fire Department Rescue Truck (P.O. Box 707, Elnora, AB. T0M 0Y0) or to STARS Air Ambulance (1441 Aviation Park N.E. P.O. Box 570, Calgary, AB. T2E 9Z9) both favorite charities of Jack's. A celebration of Jack's life will be held at the Elnora Community Hall on Thursday, June 7, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Margaret Lange officiating. Arrangements entrusted to: METCALF FUNERAL CHAPEL, 4200 49th Ave., Innisfail, AB. Phone 227-3123. Proudly serving our community for over 45 years.
