Jan. 3, 1918 - March 16, 2007
Called home, Oscie beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully and bravely surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his adored wife Sara, the love of his life for nearly seven decades; his three daughters Carole, Denise and Candace; their partners, Rick Pow, Gord Greer and Jack Smalley; and his two granddaughters, Tegan and her husband Chris Keil, and Devon Smalley. Oscar was born and raised in Vancouver and was predeceased by his parents, Oscar and Marjorie Orr, and his only brother, Alexander Orr, whose plane crashed during WWII. As a teenager Oscar worked as a lifeguard at Locarno Beach and was one of the last surviving members of the 1936 winning team of the Royal Life Saving Society Barnsley Challenge Shield. Oscar graduated from UBC in 1942 with a degree in Chemical Engineering, but he was also proud of his earning his BaC (Bounced at Christmas) which forced him to work at Woodfiber Pulpmill until the following September. While working at Woodfiber he formed life-long friendships with the Brennan family of Squamish, and managed to save enough money to eventually graduate with a thousand dollars in the bank. At UBC, he began his enduring interest in bridge and Phi Gamma Delta. After graduation from university, Oscar worked for Cal-Tex in Bahrain for a decade. He traveled to New York City to marry Sara (Ethel) Dunbar, June 8, 1945 before she joined him in Bahrain. He returned to Canada in 1951 and continued to work in the oil refinery business until his retirement from Shell Canada in the '80s. His career took him around the world and his daughters were born in Bahrain, Vancouver and Los Angeles. Oscie lived surrounded by his family of women and was considered a quiet man, but he had his moments. Scotch drinker, gardener, handyman, reader of Joyce's "Ulysses", cat-lover, bridge and cribbage player, golfer, Toastmaster and Rotarian. A hearty laugher, he was planning on mastering the computer for his next project. The family would like to salute Oscar's determination in recovering from a stroke suffered in 2001. His tenacity and cheerful spirit were an inspiration. He lived a full life and leaves this world wearing a celebratory red ribbon. Oscar was a wonderful husband, and a caring father and grandfather and will be profoundly missed but he lives on in the fond memories and hearts of his family (who are wearing his clothes) and friends. The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Shylo Nursing and Sunrise Assisted Living at Lynn Valley, especially the staff on the third floor, for their remarkable and compassionate care; to Jody Kennett, his personal trainer and to the West Vancouver Stroke Recovery Club.
