The family of Helen Farewell is saddened by her passing on Thursday, March 8, 2007. Helen Elizabeth (Neilson) Farewell was born on a farm in the Crossroads District west of Red Deer on July 4, 1911. She was the eldest of four children born to Susan and Fredrick A. Neilson. Helen took her teacher training at the Camrose Normal School and began her teaching career at age 19 in the Carritt School south of Bentley. At a dance at the Elks Hall in Red Deer she met and later married Robblee Farewell of Blackfalds. They lived and raised a family of three children on the Farewell farm west of Blackfalds. Throughout her life Helen was an active member of the local WI, wrote Blackfalds news for all the local papers, helped write and edit the district history book published in 1967, and always enjoyed playing bridge with her family. In their retirement years, Helen and Bob traveled to many duplicate bridge tournaments and both became senior master players. In 1992 she was awarded the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the confederation of Canada in recognition of significant contribution to compatriots, community and to Canada. It was conferred by the then Governor General Ray Hnatyshyn. This was a highlight of her life. Helen was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was always more concerned about the welfare of her family and community than she was about herself. She gave countless hours to listen, mentor and most of all to provide HUGS and love to everyone. Helen was called "MOM" by countless extended family members, friends and students. Her legacy will be the thousands of people touched by her loving ways. Helen left the family farm in 1998 and has lived at the Pines Lodge in Red Deer until her passing. Family and neighbours were an important part of Helen's life. She always had time to visit and to feed all that came to her door.
