Laye, Joan beloved wife of Clancy, passed away at the Oilfields Hospital, Black Diamond, on August 19, 2004 after a courageous battle with cancer. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Val (Kym), Torie (Adrian), Candy (Les), Malcolm, Todd (Lisa), April (Glenn), Dixie (Richard), Laura, her sister Pat Reimer, 17 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Joan is also survived by her sister-in-law Verna (Abe), brother-in-law Marv (Leslie), sister-in-law Dorothy as well as Inga Fobes of Olds and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Joan was predeceased by her parents Eda and Mac, sisters, Alice, Maxine and twin sister Joyce. A Memorial Service will be held at Snodgrass Funeral Chapel, 200 Woodgate Rd. Rhyasen, Millie of Nanton, passed away in Claresholm on Tues., Aug. 24th, 2004 at the age of 92 years. Millie was born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska on Dec. 21st, 1911 and, together with her family, moved to Vermilion, Alberta in 1917. Here she met her soul-mate Clarence Rhyasen and they were married in Lethbridge in 1932. The family moved to Nanton in 1952 where they raised their 4 children. She was an active community worker, faithful member of the Nanton-Parkland United Church, life member of the U.C.W., member of the Rebekah Lodge, an avid bridge player and staunch supporter of all minor sports in Nanton. She was predeceased by her husband Clarence on July 6th, 1992. Millie is survived by her children: Mory (Vivian) of Granum; Clare (Carole) of Calgary; Carell (John) Harder, Priceville, Ont.; Allen (Renee) of Vancouver, Washington, 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. At the time of her passing she was a resident of the Willow Creek Continuing Care Centre. Thanks to the staff for the kindness and companionship given to Millie.A memorial service will be held at the Nanton-Parkland United Church on Saturday, Aug. 28th at 2:00 P.M. The Rev. Staley, Robert Reginald of High River, Alberta passed away August 19, 2004 in the High River Hospital following a bravely fought battle with cancer. Robert is survived by three daughters, Susan Staley and Andrea Kabeary (Doug Kabeary) of High River and Roberta Staley of Vancouver; brothers, Allan and Ronald Staley of Saskatchewan; as well as numerous nephews, great-nephews and a niece. Robert is also survived by five grandchildren, Jennifer, Jeffrey, Kristi and Henry Kabeary of High River and Alexander Mulgrew of Vancouver. He is predeceased by his wife, Jessie Grace Staley of High River. Born in Regina, Sask. on September 30, 1924, Robert enlisted in the army in 1943. He fought in Normandy and Belgium, where he was wounded by mortar fire. Upon his release from hospital, Robert joined the Canadian Scottish Regiment. His greatest pride was being part of the liberation of Holland in 1944. Robert was both athletic and scholarly. He achieved art and teaching degrees at the University of British Columbia and University of Calgary, respectively. He played hockey and baseball, although his greatest love was football. Robert was also an accomplished artist, especially in the medium of silkscreen; his works were exhibited across the Prairies. Most of all, Robert was an inspiring art teacher; many of his students won scholarships and achieved national and even international recognition. A Funeral Service with Honor Party was held at Snodgrass Funeral Chapel, High River on Tuesday, August 24th at 2:00 p.m. Burial took place at Highwood Cemetery's Field of Honour. Wallator, Ivy May of High River, formerly of the Longview district, passed away at the Oilfields Hospital in Black Diamond on August 19th, 2004 at the age of 97 years. Ivy is survived by her daughter Betty & Robin Garstin and his son Ken Wallator & Gwen, all of Longview as well as her grandchildren: Clayton & Laurie Elliott, Dewberry, Alta.; Wade & Shannon Elliott, Longview; Ross & Jordanna Elliott, Whitehorse, Yukon; Sandra Davidson, Lethbridge; Mark & Debbie Elliott, Vermilion; Dale & Sue Wallator and Darcy & Wanda Wallator, all of Black Diamond and Bonita Peterkin, Fort St. John, B.C. and numerous great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Vera Lawrence and four nephews. Ivy was predeceased by her husband Charles Wallator on March 15th, 1990, by her parents Ada & Fred Lawrence and her brother Bill Lawrence. Charlton, Doritha “Daisy” A little to the east or a little to the west, Daisy Charlton was a true High Riverite. Born in 1909, Daisy grew up on the homestead which her dad started in 1889 after coming from England to Ontario and then out west. Her mother raised seven children, the youngest of whom was Daisy. Daisy attended Ridgeview school where she remembered a class of 28 students, all different ages, in one room to Grade 9. In 1931 Daisy married Milfred Thompson and the two moved seven miles west of High River where they farmed. George, Mary, Joe and Dorothy filled in the Thompson family. In 1962 they retired to High River; Milfred passed away in 1972. In 1977, Daisy married Otto Charlton (who passed away in 1982) and Daisy became step-mother to Izora and Alistair Watson; Ralph, Lee, Dale and Jean Charlton and Marie and Ken Stephenson. She sat on the executive of the FWUA, Legion Auxiliary, Red Cross and the Friendship Centre. Daisy was grandmother to 29 and a great grandmother to over 40 as well as a great great grandmother to 5. Her fifteen years in the Nursing Home were busy ones with crafts, music and trips. “I go into anything… and anywhere the Handibus goes, ” said Daisy. Daisy’s kitchen fixin’s were often found at the High River Country Fair where in 1992 she won for her biscuits. “It’s hard to find her when you come here, ” said George. Daisy was also predeceased by 2 grandsons, son-in-law Jon, step son Ralph, step daughter-in-law Lee, step son-in-law Alistair and 3 step grandsons. A Memorial Service for Daisy was held on Monday, November 15th at 2:00 p.m. at the Snodgrass Funeral Home in High River. Cowling, Barbara Louise (Connell) passed away peacefully on November 14th, 2004 at the age of 98 years. She was the beloved wife of the late George Cowling. Barbara is survived by her four children, Pearl (Ron) Laycraft of Millarville, Norman (Joan) Cowling of Edmonton, Lloyd Cowling of Innisfail and Ellen (George) Jones of Grimshaw, on brother Melvin (Audrey) Connell of Grande Prairie and one sister-in-law Alice Cowling of High River. She will be greatly missed by twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter-in-law Phyllis Cowling, four brothers and six sisters. Barbara was raised by her parents J.H. and Elizabeth Connell on the Gladys Ridge. She left home at twenty-one and worked for several different families in the East Longview district before marrying George in 1934. In 1966, they sold the farm to Lloyd and retired to High River. Charity work was very important to Barbara and she was a life member of the U.C.W., at both Tongue Creek and High River, she was an active member in both the Farm Women’s Assoc. and the Red Cross Quilter’s Guild. Barbara belonged to High River District Old Timers’ Assoc. and the Southern Alberta Old Timers’. She loved to sew and crochet. Over the years she won many prizes at both the Millarville and High River Fairs with her handiwork, baking and flowers. In 1987, she moved to the Medicine Tree Manor. She truly enjoyed her life at the Manor and lead an active lifestyle. The family used to joke that you had to make an appointment to see her! In 2001, due to failing health, she moved to the High River Hospital Nursing Home. The Family thanks the many individuals who helped our mother through the years! Diebel, Michael beloved husband of Florence Diebel, High River, passed away at the High River Hospital on November 8th, 2004 at the age of 79 years. Besides his loving wife, Mike is survived by his daughter Diane Diebel, Millarville and his sons Clarence (Diane) Diebel, High River and Harvey Diebel, Edmonton. He is also survived by 3 sisters, 2 brothers and 2 brothers-in-law. Mike was predeceased by his parents, 3 sisters and 4 brothers. Born at Chamberlain, Saskatchewan on February 20th, 1925, Mike was raised and educated at Chamberlain. In 1951 he and the former Florence Zyla were married and they lived at Regina until moving to Lethbridge in 1956 where he was employed with Einerson Motors. In 1968 they moved to Calgary where he was employed with Metro Motors. In 1990 they came to High River where they have resided since. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, November 12th at 10:30 A.M. at St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church, High River. The Rev. Father Philip Le, celebrant. Cremation followed the Mass. Lefthand, Beverly (Tunksijoo) sister, has gone to be with our heavenly father and Lord Jesus Christ on Nov. 12th, 2004 at the age of 47 years. Among her survivors are her father Wayne Lefthand, brother Leo, sons Pierre (Melvandra), Wilbert (Melissa), Bradford (Sabrina), and Owen, daughters April and Chelsea, adopted brother Timothy Knight. Her grandchildren Morning Star, Mattias, Sonia, Monisha, Evonie, Dylan, Paetin, Santanna, Anissa and Ezra nephew Gabriel (Yvette) Wesley, nieces Enise (Lorne), Garina and Selena as well as numerous uncles and aunts, cousins, grandnieces and friends from Eden Valley and Morley. She was predeceased by her mother Susan, brothers Aurthur, Brian, and Peter, sister Elaine, grandparents Mark and Mary Lefthand, Johnny and Jean Smalleyes. Wake service was held at the residence of the late Beverly Lefthand on Nov. 15th and 16th. Funeral services were held at the Chief Jacob Bearspaw Memorial School Gym on Wednesday, November 17th at 1:00 P.M. Longson, Joy of the Meadowbank area, passed away at the Willow Creek Continuing Care Centre, Claresholm on November 12th, 2004 at the age of 68 years. She is survived by her husband Cecil Longson, Meadowbank (R.R 2, High River); her children Cal (Wanda) Longson, Cayley, Jackie (Charlie) Gendre, Sherwood Park, Keith (Rhonda) Longson, Cayley and by eight grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Ardell Chivers, Vancouver. A memorial service was held at SNODGRASS FUNERAL CHAPEL, High River on Tuesday, November 16th, 2004 at 1:30 p.m.with the Reverend R.W.
