Scherer, Erich beloved husband, father and grandfather, lost his long battle with throat and lung cancer on April 24, 2009. Erich was born in Alexanderfeld, Bessarabia (now Moldova) on June 14th, 1939 to the late Eduard Scherer and Berta Helber. After World War 11 ended, the family immigrated to Canada to start a new life. For two years the family laboured on a sugar beet farm to pay off their debt and save enough money to buy a plot of farmland near Coaldale, Alberta. Erich worked hard to support his family before moving to Calgary. Despite speaking limited English at the time, he proved his skills as a carpenter eventually working on the University of Calgary campus. Erich met and married his wife Meta in 1969 and together they moved into the duplex he had built after work and on weekends. But city life was not for him. In 1974, they bought a half section of farmland outside of High River. They ploughed and prepared the fields for their first crop later that spring. During the next four years, Erich continued to drive out to the farm on weekends and evenings to seed and harvest the crops. To supplement the income from the crops, livestock was bought and chicken coops added and before long the farm was self-sufficient. With more hard work, long hours and sheer determination they built Quonsets, sheds and grain bins, expanded gardens, planted trees and flowerbeds to become what it is today. This is what Erich enjoyed most and where he wanted to be. Those who knew him best will always remember him for his willingness to help others, his charismatic personality, his sense of humour and his strong Christian faith. Erich is survived by his wife, Meta and their three children: Carolynne (Chris) Kedge, Linda (Matt) Symmes and son Robert along with grandchildren Anna Symmes and Kathryn and Sofia Kedge. He is also survived by his siblings Wilma, Erna, Richard, Brunhilde, Lisalotte and Ingrid and their families. The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Bosch, Dr. Hao and the nurses and staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and all the staff at the Southwood Hospice for their care and kindness. A funeral service will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 910 – 12th Ave. W., High River on today, Friday, May 1st at 2:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 910 – 12 Ave.S.W., High River, AB T1V 1B1.
