Shirley Ann Hackman
Died: Mon., Oct. 26, 2015
It is with much love and caring that we announce the passing of Shirley Ann Hackman: wife, mother, sister, grandma and dear friend.
Born on August 5, 1938 in Viking, Alberta, to Max and Florence Hill, Shirley was the second of six children.
Raised on the farm in Dapp, Shirley learned the value of hard work, family and community. This precious time with her siblings, Lorna, Eva, Pat, Delvin and Karen was always remembered with such joy. Laughing, celebrating, riding horses, playing games and school sports. Even as a young girl, she was always including others to be a part of her family.
When she wasn’t studying or helping with chores, she was nurturing her love of reading. She loved to just curl up with a book, and often felt this was one of her most peaceful moments.
Graduating from the University of Alberta’s teaching program, she set off on her career teaching grades one and two in a small country school in Flatbush. It was here that she met the principal, Jack Hackman.
In 1961, Shirley married Jack, the love of her life, and they moved to Edmonton where they continued their respective teaching careers. Two years later, they welcomed their daughter Deidre and two years after that, completed their family with daughter Leann.
In 1972, the family moved to Namao, and began creating a new life on the acreage. Here, many wonderful memories were made. Hockey games on the outdoor rink, pool parties, board game nights, kids sleepovers, annual celebrations and feasts. The Hackman home was always full of animals, family and friends and that is exactly how Shirley wanted it.
Shirley was loved and admired by many- near and far. She had a passion for serving others in a time of need. She would often send a note, phone or stop by to visit when she knew a friend or family member needed a little encouragement. Even during her final days and hours, she wanted to know how others were doing. Her genuine concern for others continued to shine through, even though she knew her time on earth was coming to an end. In particular, she had a heart for those who didn’t quite fit in. These were the ones that got her special care and attention. She had a God-given gift of encouragement for them, and never hesitated to let them know they were both loved and accepted for who they were.
Shirley surrounded her life with music, colour and beauty. An accomplished organist, some of her favourite moments were playing for the choir during Sunday services. Fashion was always a passion. She loved to create. Needlework, sewing, quilting were just a few of her hobbies. Her beautiful garden was an escape where she would nurture the most beautiful flowers. The weather. Shirley always commented on the day: whether or not sun was shining set the tone for her day. Active in sports all her life: from skating to skiing in the winter: swimming and golfing in the summer.
Shirley loved to travel, and had the opportunity to travel with her family and friends to a number of destinations later in life. One of the many highlights was travelling with Jack and a few close friends to Hawaii to volunteer for Youth With A Mission. Shirley knew that she was put on earth to make a difference in the lives of others, and that gave her meaning, purpose and joy.
It was this, her unwavering faith in God that kept her going, especially during these last few years. It was the solid foundation on which she built and lived her life.
In 2009, Shirley was diagnosed with a rare form of mesothelioma cancer. After several operations, treatment in the United States and Edmonton, and a courageous fight to the end, Shirley lost her battle against the disease. Surrounded in the final days by family who loved her dearly, Shirley took her last breath on earth at the University of Alberta hospital on October 26. She was comforted in knowing she had made a meaningful, lasting impact on her family and friends and that her time on earth was complete. Well done good and faithful servant, well done. Her smile will be missed.
We wish to thank all those health care professionals who helped extend and improve the quality of her life during the past few years. In particular, Dr. Wally Temple at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary; Dr. DeLeon at the Burzynski Clinic in Houston; and Dr. Spratlin at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton and most recently, the staff in Unit 5D at the University of Alberta hospital.
Shirley is predeceased by her father Max, mother Florence, sister Lorna and brother Delvin. She is survived by her husband Jack, daughters Deidre and Leann (Graham) , two precious grandchildren Jordan and Sage, and close sisters Eva Zaborowsky, Pat Rowland and Karen McNelly.
A celebration to honour her legacy will take place Saturday, October 31, 2015 at Christcity Church, 14788-156 Street, Edmonton, Alberta at 11:00 AM. Official internment to follow the luncheon at Westlock Cemetary. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to make a donation to your personal charity of choice in her honour.
