1934 - 2017
Born William Frederick Hawken in Provost, Alberta on March 4, 1934 to Ernest and Margaret Hawken, Bill was the eldest of the three, with sisters Miriam and Joyce.
After completing grade 11 in Provost Bill went to Calgary and received mechanics and welding certificates at SAIT, returning home to farm with his Dad as well as working as a mechanic at Schielke and Bertschi IH dealership. He and Sue married in 1956 and lived in Provost until 1964 when they moved Billy, Dale and Rodney out to the farm 8 miles straight north of town. Valerie was born 3 years later.
Cousin Don said, “He was Superman! He could do anything!” If something needed to be fixed, he could fix it. If something needed to be built, he could build it and, if something needed to be done, he would do it. Bill had extraordinary skill and knowledge with machinery and equipment. Neighbors in need would pull into the yard with broken down equipment and he would have them back into the field on short notice.
In the winter months Bill could be found working at Pat’s Garage or building cabinets with Floyd McDonald or renovating the old farmhouse. He always liked to be kept busy.
Bill was a master farmer, following the markets and trends in order to maximize revenue. When cattle and pigs were up, he raised them. When they were down, he sold out. He was one of the first innovators in the area to raise canola, a decision that arguably changed the family’s future.
He was a Lion’s Club member, sat on natural gas and school boards and coached or managed minor hockey and baseball teams during the late 1960’s and through the 70’s. His proudest achievement was being on the 1978 Legion Midgets Western Canadian champions.
Bill was born a farmer but, as Sue had been afflicted with arthritis, he chose to move to warmer climates and escape the Alberta winters, settling in Vernon, B.C. in 1983. He took up golf and downhill skiing at the time and continued to play golf into his 80’s, carding 3 holes-in-one over a 30 year period! After a few years of winter in Vernon he thought Yuma, Arizona had a better climate so Rogers and Westwind RV Resort became home during the winter. Bill hadn’t quit farming though as he always returned for seeding and harvest to work with Don and/or Jeff. Farming and things related to it remained his passion until the day he died. He had hoped to see that new seeder in operation this spring as much as he enjoyed time spent on that big new combine last fall. He could hardly get out of the truck but he sure scampered up that ladder to the cab of the combine!
In 2000 Bill and Sue moved back to Alberta into St. Albert where they were able to access increasing levels of care and assistance in their daily lives as well as living closer to family. He continued to farm and golf and loved watching sports on TV, especially hockey, curling and baseball.
Dad was our rock, the foundation of the family. We knew that we could go to him for anything at any time and get what we needed. He is loved and missed by all of us.
Bill will be lovingly remembered by his sons, Dale and Rodney (Debbie) ; daughter, Valerie (Jeff) Paulgaard; grandchildren, Justine, Melissa, Nicole, Nelson, Brett and Tamara; as well as numerous other relatives and friends.
Bill was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Sue; son, Billy; and parents, Ernest and Margaret.

Harold Boyd Mock
1933 - 2017
Harold Boyd Mock was born on May 17, 1933 in Medicine Hat, Alberta to Gottlob and Mary Mock. He was the third of four children. An older sister passed away from appendicitis. Howard was born, then Harold and followed by Roy. They grew up in a farming/ranching community, in the Many Island Lakes area near Irvine. As a child he could only speak German.
Harold and Lillian were married May 26, 1967 in a double wedding ceremony in the United Church in Provost. The newlyweds first lived in a trailer which was 8 feet wide by 40 feet long. Anyone visiting in the early years will remember traveling the longest prairie trail through the pasture to get to their place. Many evenings were spent visiting and playing cards and music and everyone seemed to fit in their home.
In 1972 their first child Sandra was born. Harold was so proud to be a father with his beautiful little angel daughter. In 1980, their second child, Shawn was born. How excited Harold was. With a daughter and a son, now their family was complete.
With hard work and patience, Harold and Lillian built up the home ranch. Ranching was Harolds passion and he was always on the go. Many hours spent feeding cows, hauling feed from Brownfield with his green truck, milking cows and feeding newborn calves. They took special pride in their Hereford herd. Harold had a very quiet herd of cattle and he was much like the pied piper of cows. Harold would call "Come On" and the entire herd would come on the run.
Harold believed deeply in God, which was evident how he lived his life and treated his family and friends. He never left a family member behind and was always thinking of others. Sandra explained” Dad does everything for us.” His hug was like being hugged by a bear and you felt thoroughly loved. The hug was followed by a "God Bless & Bless You".
While Harold was very ill, he gave his parting directions to Lillian. He insisted that she feed Big Bully and don’t leave anything hungry. Uncle Harold passed from this life on April 12 with Lillian and Sandra by his side. Harold is in heaven having reunion with those who have gone before him.
He is deeply loved and dearly missed. Until we meet again, No excuses.
Harold will be forever missed by his loving wife of nearly 50 years, Lillian; daughter, Sandra; son, Shawn (Michelle) ; brothers, Howard (Loreen) and Roy; sisters in law, Margaret Kvigstad, Carolyn Rampling and Gayle (Bob) Howes; as well as numerous other relatives and friends.
Harold was predeceased by his sister, Joyce; sisters in law, Marietta Mock and Eva (Jim) Fossen; brothers in law, Clarence Kvigstad and Robert “Buddy” Rampling.
