Browne, Monique Michelle It is with wonderful memories and a deep sense of loss, we announce the death of our daughter, sister, and friend Monique Michele Browne. Monique was born on December 31, 1974 to Irene and Alan Browne. She was born with Down’s Syndrome complicated by a severe heart defect. When we were told of her special condition, we decided she should have a special and unique name so we named her Monique Michelle. The doctor told us Monique would not live through the night. But they completely underestimated the fighting spirit with which she was born. Monique lived most of her life in Edmonton where she met her guardian angel, Joan Nelson. Joan is a compassionate and rare human being. It was Joan who saw Monique’s possibilities and refused to accept the doctors’ dire predictions. Joan helped Monique reach her full potential learning to walk, talk, and read. Monique loved West Edmonton Mall and the Edmonton Oilers. One of Monique’s great personal achievements was when she graduated from Ross Shepherd High School in Edmonton. As she walked across the stage in her graduation gown, she raised both her hands and gave the victory salute. The whole auditorium broke into applause as they too recognized her great achievement. Monique and Joan moved to High River because Joan wanted more for Monique. The community of High River has a special group of people known as Foothills AIM Society. We want to recognize their presence here today. You are unprecedented in your commitment to our uncommon population. And Joan wanted Monique to be part of your program. Thank you for welcoming Joan and Monique with open arms. Through your programs Monique further developed her communication skills not to mention her sense of humor. Monique thoroughly enjoyed all the jobs offered to her and the extra curricular activities as well as the many people who touched her life in AIM. Monique was blessed to have two sets of parents as well as three sets of grandparents. In Milo, Alma and Pal Nelson and their extended family treated Monique as their own. Monique loved the days she spent at "the farm" helping her grandma bake cookies or garden. In Medicine Hat she spent days with the Browne side of her family and was always cherished there. About two years ago, Monique’s sister, Lana got married. Monique was given the job of the guest book. She enjoyed talking to everyone as they came into the church. But she added her own special touch to the wedding ceremony when she added a loud OOOOOOH when Lana and John kissed. When Monique was asked when she would get married, she quickly answered she was too old to get married or have children herself. Byron, Monique’s brother, is an athlete who always talked to Monique about one of her heroes, Hulk Hogan. Together they would strike wrestling poses including facial expressions and entertained everyone. Monique’s father, Al, found a kindred spirit in Monique when he learned how much she loved hamburgers. He could always make an unwanted medical treatment a little easier to bear when he told her he would bring her a hamburger if she was good. She had many medical procedures that were made a little easier because a hamburger was her reward. I’m sure you have many memories of Monique yourself. And we want you to feel free to write them down in the memory books that are at the doors of the church. Over the years, Monique’s Mom Irene tried to rationalize her small part in Monique’s life. She found it in this quote from Kahlil Gibran: ‘Your children are not your children. They are sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, ….. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth. The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far. Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness: For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable." It was a privilege and honor to be a part of Monique’s life. She taught us lessons of strength, determination, and unconditional love. Now we must say to goodbye to Monique. But here is one last thought from Kahlil Gibran: "You would know the secret of death. But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life?…. For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one. In the depths of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyond; And like seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring. Trust the dreams for in them is hidden the gate to eternity." A memorial service will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, High River on Thursday, July 3rd at 2:00 p.m. Arrangements in care of Snodgrass Funeral Homes (High River) 652-2222.

Monika (Steingrube) Dery
Died: Mon., Apr. 11, 2016
Our wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and artist has left us for a better world after a courageous battle with cancer. Monika is survived by her husband, Marcel Dery (Hinton), son Mathieu (Michelle) Dery, daughter Madeleine Dery, grandchildren Jacqueline, Ethan and Maya, mother Anne (Oma) Steingrube, brothers Herm Steingrube and Klaus Steingrube, as well as several nieces and nephews. Monika was predeceased by her father Joe (Opa) Steingrube and in-laws Yvette and Maurice Dery.
While cut short, a life at 69 yearts old was still full of creativity, generosity, love, fun and caring for people, nature and animals (Keeta).
Born in Ochsenhausen, Germany, December 29, 1946, Monika immigrated to Canada in August, 1951 with her family. They settled in Prince Rupert, BC, for five years before Joe brought the family to Hinton to participate in the start-up of the North Western Pulp and Power Mill.
A very proud Hintonite, Monika had friendships dating back to grade school in the fifties and impacted the lives of so many more since then while living for a time in Edmonton and recently enjoying winters in Arizona.
Monika's passion for art was second only to her passion for family. She was happiest when the two came together in guiding her grandchildren through painting, pottery and glasswork projects.
Monika was an avid volunteer wherever she spent time including at the Good Sam, where her mother resides, as well as the Hinton Art Club and many others.
At Monika's request, "Happy Hours" celebration of her life for all of her friends and family will take place on Friday, April 15, 2016 at 4:00 PM at the Hinton Community Centre.
In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to the Hinton Good Samaritan Society.
"And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work."
